Man abducted, taken to withdraw money at ATM

Police have arrested one suspect in Port of Spain after the victim escaped two bandits who had abducted him and taken him to an ATM machine after invading his home.

Police arrested one of the bandits after a chase in Port of Spain on Wednesday night.

While on mobile patrol in the vicinity of Republic Bank, Independence Square, around 10.30 p.m., Cpl Gonzales and PC Deo were approached by a man who reported that he was being robbed by two men.

A police statement said that the man’s ordeal began at his Pleasantville, San Fernando, home around 9 p.m. when two men entered his house and announced a hold up, before taking the victim’s Samsung cellphone valued at $4,000 and $320 in cash.

“The assailants then demanded more money before dealing the victim several blows to his head with a firearm,” the police statement said. “The assailants, driving a silver Nissan Wingroad, forcibly took the man to Republic Bank, Independence Square branch, where they demanded that he withdraw money from his bank account.”

The victim spotted the police patrol and alerted them about what was taking place.

The vehicle with the bandits sped off and the police gave chase and radioed for assistance.

Around 10.40 p.m., officers of the Port of Spain Division Task Force, Area East and West and the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF), responded to the transmission requesting assistance.

The vehicle was eventually intercepted heading east on Wrightson Road.

A 41-year-old man from Winston Mahabir Street, San Fernando, was arrested and taken to the Besson Street Police Station pending further enquiries, police said.

Police Seize Ketamine at Courier, Cash at Port

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service continues to make inroads into the illegal trade of narcotics and contraband through legitimate ports of entry, as officers seized a quantity of Ketamine and US and local currency during separate intelligence-led operations this week.

On Wednesday 29th November 2023, an intelligence unit within the TTPS received information that identified a package which was shipped from Queens, New York and destined to a consignee in D’Abadie. The description of contents was documented as coffee and packaged food; however, the package was suspected to contain contraband.

Attempts were made to apprehend the local consignee, however, the suspected persons never arrived to collect the package. Consequently, the intelligence unit, in collaboration with Northern Division (ND) officers proceeded to the courier company, where the said package was scanned and two of the sachets of coffee reflected anomalies. The two sachets were probed further and found to contain a white powdery substance. When tested, the substance gave a positive indication to be that of Ketamine. The total weight of the Ketamine was 72.68 grams, with an estimated street value of $50,876. The TTPS will collaborate with its international partners with a view of identifying and monitoring the sender of the package.

Also, in early November 2023, the intelligence unit received information which suggested that an employee at the Port of Port of Spain, facilitates the smuggling of narcotics and contraband into and out of the port, concealed amongst legitimate cargo through various cargo vessels. The information suggested that the port employee had plans to meet an accomplice at the P.O.S. Port, to conduct a possible hand over of narcotics and the exchange of currency.

The TTPS developed the information further, gathered intelligence and identified the suspected accomplice and their vehicle. The team immediately acted on the information and through surveillance on Wednesday 29th November, 2023, identified the vehicle at the CARICOM Port, P.O.S. The intelligence unit reached out to Customs for operational support and the vehicle was intercepted at the port. During the search, the port employee and the other suspected accomplice were identified as the occupants of the vehicle. Police seized $1810 US and $46,015 TT which the accomplice had in his possession. Both persons were later conveyed to the Customs Division pending further enquiries.

A used-car salesman has been charged for the possession of a stolen vehicle on Wednesday 06th December, 2023.

• The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Christian Spann of William Street, Aranguez and Johnny King Branch Road, Aranguez.

• Spann was reportedly granted bail in the sum of $250,000 by Justice of the Peace, Stephen Young and is scheduled to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate on January 10, 2024.

• The charges stem from a report of a stolen white Toyota Axio, which was allegedly taken from the Central Division on August 30, 2022, and later found with a tampered chassis number in the Central Division on October 24, 2023.

• After a thorough investigation, PC Green of the Stolen Vehicles Squad sought legal advice and subsequently charged Spann with the offence of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.

• This investigation was spearheaded by Snr. Supt. Ramjohn, Supt. Pariman and ASP Ramdass, and was directly supervised by Inspector Lazarus.

In February 2023, Spann was arrested after he was caught with a Glock 9mm pistol in Warner Street, Freeman Road, St Augustine.
