but my friends caught a salmon bout 30lbs yesterday .... one of the biggest i've seen...

Crabs don't always have 2 different sized claws..

Females have 2 same size claws,, males have a larger one,, and a smaller one,, the larger one grows and grows as a sign of their health when competing for mates.. also depends on the species some have no claws at all! while others like the giant coconut crab have 2 very large size claws and the female has not any!.


proton17 thanks,, i know about those have seen them and did try one, not sure if its the same, but the guy used a pyramid sinker,, and platted 4 wires off it to grab.. it did hold position but was difficult to retrieve,, kept holding on to rocks and weed. ,, the ones I'm interested in,, the grips slip out and slide backward in a position that it can no longer hold onto anything.. which can be used for rock fishing (like in toco at the lighthouse), surf etc..

the ones you speak of there (in toco),, well you never get them back sadly!,,

ps.. if you have to use those in toco you cant use a pulley rig, it must be a rotten bottom if you want to have any chance of saving the leader and your line as well as retrieving the fish! unlike the breakaway's those have 99% loss ratio!

That's just a big female corncutter. They usually have a smaller left claw just as males. My father always used that term corncutter for crabs male or female that have 2 same sized claws.
Nice fish too, looks strikingly similar to the black jewfish rather than weakfish/salmon which i know doesn't get that large. Would be great to know if they're in our waters now.
