Local Fruit ~ Bilimbi

Cucumber Tree, Tree Sorrel

The Bilimbi fruit is very crunchy when unripe and it turns from bright green to yellowish-green, when it becomes fully mature.

The outer skin is shiny, very thin and gentle, and the flesh will be greenish-white in color which will be very juicy and extremely sour.

It has a few flattened, brown seeds and the juice of this fruit is tangy and refreshing.

Apart from that, Bilimbi is used as a spice in cooking delicious and appetizing curries.

It is sometimes used as a mango substitute for preparing chutney and is also preserved.

Local Cinnamon ~ Health Benefits

The Spice in Diabetes Control

According to research, there are two types of cinnamon, they being Cassia and Ceylon cinnamon.

Ceylon is said to be the true cinnamon and Cassia is known as the untrue cinnamon.

There is evidence to show that cinnamon may be effective in lowering blood glucose levels and that that those with Type 2 Diabetes can cheat on their glucose test by taking cinnamon the night before a ‘Fasting Blood Sugar’ test.

However, it can be toxic in large amounts and it is therefore recommended by some experts to take no more than 1/3 tsp of cinnamon powder daily.

This can help to reduce any health risk that can occur for cinnamon consumers.

Where does cinnamon come from?

Both types of cinnamon grow in different areas. Ceylon cinnamon is said to grow in Sir Lanka and South India. It is a type of tree with a soft bark. This bark is said to be thinner and can have more layers.

Cassia cinnamon comes from a different plant located in Southeast Asia and can be found in Vietnam and China
.

Which cinnamon is better?

The true cinnamon is said to be less harmful and toxic than the Cassia cinnamon and is therefore preferred, but it is more expensive. It is said that most cinnamon sold is not the true cinnamon and that because of the cheaper cost, the Cassia cinnamon is more commonly sold than the Ceylon. Sometimes, the composition of the cinnamon can be a mixture of both Ceylon and Cassia when in powdered form.

Cassia is said to be more harmful because it is said to contain more coumarin, which is a strong anticoagulant. It can thin the blood and pose health problems in large amounts. Ceylon is said to be associated with a lower health risk than Cassia.

Ways in which you can include cinnamon in your diet:

1. Add a sprinkle to cereal, for example granola cereal.
2. Include cinnamon as a spice in unsweetened tea
3. Baked into food
4. Sprinkled on snacks, for example cookies and cakes.
5. Include in fruit juices
6. Sprinkle on fruits
7. Use cinnamon in meat as a type of seasoning
8. Choose foods that contain cinnamon

This spice is used in medicine for its benefits, for example, in type 2 diabetes. However, if you overdose, it can be harmful to your liver and negatively impact your body.

It is said to be more beneficial in powdered form because you have more control over the amount used. Powdered form is also easier to use when flavouring foods.

Apart from the powdered form, cinnamon can appear in stick form. Cinnamon can also be used in supplement form.

The two types of cinnamon can be differentiated based on their appearances. Cassia cinnamon is brighter in colour and has a reddish appearance. The bark is lightly folded with an empty cavity, while Ceylon cinnamon bark is darker in colour and has several layers. Powdered form is also available and can be preferred since the amount used can be easily measured. This is to ensure that the right amount of cinnamon is taken daily to prevent overdosing.

Overall benefits of cinnamon

1. Control of Glucose Levels

Cinnamon can be used to reduce glucose levels in the blood. It may be effective in controlling blood sugar spikes.

2. Brain function

Cinnamon can be used to help increase brain function. It may give a boost in cognitive processing and may also improve memory.

3. Blood Pressure control

Cinnamon may help to control and reduce blood pressure levels.

4. High Antioxidant properties

This spice is a powerful antioxidant. It may help to reduce free radical damage caused by reactions in the body. It can also be used to help fight the common cold.

5. Source of Calcium and Fibre

Cinnamon may help to reduce osteoporosis which is the breakdown of bones. It is rich in fibre which has a positive impact since it can help to remove cholesterol from the blood.

7. Lowers blood cholesterol levels

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides, which are bad cholesterols, may be reduced significantly by including cinnamon in the diet.

8. Weight loss, headaches and migraines

It has the ability to help with weight loss if combined with honey. It is also a natural remedy for reducing headaches as well as providing migraine relief.

Local Heritage ~ Chinese People of Trinidad and Tobago

Five persons of Chinese heritage who helped shape T&T

Many of us are aware that Chinese communities celebrate Double 10, that is, October 10, every year, however not many of us may know why.

Double Ten Day is a Chinese holiday commemorating the start of the Wuchang Uprising of October 10, 1911 (10-10 or double ten), which led to the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in China and establishment of the Republic of China on January 1, 1912.

Coincidentally, the first wave of Chinese immigrants arrived on October 12, 1806.

As a result, on this day in Trinidad and Tobago many Chinese stores may have ‘Double 10’ specials, while others within the local Chinese community may host festivals and other gatherings.

Here are five well-known Chinese persons who have contributed to T&T’s culture and society:

1. Sir Solomon Hochoy

Sir Solomon Hochoy was born on 20 April 1905 in Jamaica, and arrived in Trinidad at the age of two. He grew up in the village of Blanchisseuse and attended St. Mary's College from 1917 to 1922.

In 1927, he began his distinguished career in the Civil Service. He served in various posts, and quickly worked his way up the organizational ladder. Upon attainment of Independence in 1962, he became the Governor-General until 1972.

2. Carlisle Chang

A renowned artist, Carlisle Chang’s work is memorialized in the Coat of Arms and national flag of Trinidad and Tobago.

Known as the ‘Father of Art’ in T&T, Chang’s work was prolific and boundary-breaking. He also served as President of the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago (1984-89). Chang received many awards, including the national honour of the Hummingbird Award in 1964.

3. Louis Jay Williams

Louis Jay Williams was born in Trinidad in 1897. He started business as a manufacturer's agent and eventually founded L.J. Williams Marketing Co. Ltd. He was the first Trinidadian businessman to use a local broadcasting station for advertising purposes. He also established the Australia to W.I. Shipping Service. He was a supporter of education and the local film industry.

4. Dr Joseph Lennox Pawan

Dr Joseph Lennox Pawan was a Trinidadian bacteriologist who was the first person to show that rabies could be spread by vampire bats to other animals and humans.

Dr Pawan attended St. Mary’s College, Port of Spain, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University.

In 1929, after an outbreak of rabies among cattle, humans began contracting the disease. Dr Pawan found the first infected vampire bat in March 1932 and proved that various species of bat are capable of transmitting rabies for an extended period of time.

In the King's Birthday Honours (1934), Pawan was appointed as a member of the Order of the British Empire for his ground-breaking discovery. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) also posthumously named him a "Hero in Health" in 2002.

5. Dai Ailian, the 'Mother of Chinese Modern Dance'

Dai Ailian, born in T&T, was a Chinese dancer and an important figure in the modern history of dance in China. Her years as a dance teacher and educator helped China build a generation of dancers, choreographers, and educators. She is known in China as the "Mother of Chinese Modern Dance".

She was co-founder of the National Ballet of China and the Beijing Dance Academy. She’s also said to have been the first person to bring western ballet to China in the 1940s.

Local Macajuel ~ Boa Constrictor

This large Boa constrictor, locally known as macajuel was retrieved in Valencia some months ago after Mr. Joel found it under his house near his cats and dogs, he said he liked seeing the snake around but as it reached this close to his house and pets he wanted it to be moved to a safer, more remote location.

He was able to get the boa (which he named Fred) into a barrel until we arrived.
Fred measured out at approximately six and a half feet and weighed roughly 35 pounds

This is a nice idea of how large these snakes can get, although being a massive reptile and an apex predator they are not a threat to humans, however if provoked it will defend itself by biting.
