Local Highway ~ Corinth Overpass and Claxton Bay Overpass

Dear Ministry of Works and Transport Trinidad & Tobago M.P. Fitzgerald Hinds of Laventille West, extremely shoddy patch work was recently done on the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway between Corinth Overpass and Claxton Bay Overpass both Northbound & Southbound

Who is the "contractor" responsible?

It seems as though they just threw the material on the road, "mashed it with their feet" and went about their way.

Local Patrick Manning

This photo of the late Prime Minister Patrick Manning, on his wedding day, 44 years ago, with his wife Hazel

It gives a rare insight into the man who passed away on July 2nd, 2016.

Describing him as her first and only love, Mrs Manning recalled, in a recent interview that she first met Patrick at a Carnival fete at the Royal Hotel in San Fernando, when they were both teenagers, attending secondary school.

People of Trinidad and Tobago ~ Warren Tidd

We used to make joke in prison,” Mr. Tidd tells me. “The amount of people we see going out of jail and coming back so fast, we would ask them: ‘They have a big snake out there that frighten you back in? They have anaconda?”

Warren Tidd himself had been in and out of prison nine times—once for murder. While on death row he began studying the Bhagavad Gita, Koran and Bible, seeking help, as he realized he could not find the kind of assistance he needed in man. Even his lawyer had told him his case was a hard one and there was nothing anyone could do.

“Because my help came from God, I decided I will not turn my back on Him,” Mr. Tidd says. “Up to this day I don’t do nothing without consulting Him because He allowed me to come out of prison.

“14 Christmas, 14 Easter all fly by with water in my eyes . . . But I was being encouraged by faith-based groups that came in. ‘Hold on, hold on,’ they said. Just by that I decided to hold on and trust in God. I wanted a renewal in my mind. I wanted to remove the old scars that made dents in my mind from things I had done and things people did to me. I just wanted something new, to be free, for a burden to be off my shoulder.”

Inspired in prison to develop a spiritual programme—“Let Your Light So Shine”—Mr. Tidd would discuss with other inmates: ‘What has our lives like this? What causes a man to come to a lifestyle that leads to prison?’

During his final sentence he proclaimed to fellow prisoners that he would not return. He would leave jail and make a difference outside.

Today Warren Tidd, a respected man, is Owner and CEO of Franchise Layman Outreach Centre (FLO). This non-governmental organisation, a halfway house for ex-prisoners and deportees, is located at Patricia Terrace, off Shirvan Road, Buccoo.

Carlton (not his real name), a slim, cheerful man, weighs a watermelon piece for me at the fruit stall (Franchise Marketplace) located opposite Island Investments, Shirvan Road. The stall, started by Mr. Tidd eight years ago (with just a small table used by the men to play dominoes under a tree), sells mostly produce grown by men at the Centre.

In the stall there is an abundance of pumpkin, tomatoes, ground provisions, plantains, sweet peppers, pineapples, watermelon, coconuts and more. People stop to buy, as supporters have advertised the stall on Facebook:
“Please support a vital community group who are trying to help themselves. Franchise Layman Outreach on Patricia Terrace off Shirvan Road. ‘Reducing the social and financial costs of our community.’ "

Money from sales will help pay the $3,500/month rent for the building that houses the Centre, enabling it to continue its important work. Once paid for by THA, rental payments are currently eighteen months in arrears.
Carlton tells me that he has been in prison nine times—the longest sentence being six years. Following his final sentence, six months spent at the Franchise Layman Outreach Centre changed his life.

There, Carlton would rise early and head out to the land around the Centre to plant vegetables, enjoy fresh air, work up a sweat, then ride his bike for more exercise. Daily Bible discussions and viewing of biblical movies further helped with his gradual reform.

“My life totally transformed,” he says. Now he is eager to guide others on the right path, as Mr. Tidd does.
“Friends talk things into our minds that turn us delinquent,” Mr. Tidd informs. “I go to schools and let children know there is no life in crime. When people come to Franchise I tell them of my experience and gradually introduce them to God. Life goes on and you are getting older and can’t go back and do the same old thing.”

Mr. Tidd’s desire to give back to society is coupled with the desire for society to see him as God would—rather than as a ‘jail bird’.

“Spirituality is the key and answer for crime today,” he says. “If someone gets a spiritual concept of life, he can experience love and joy. We don’t have love. We miss LOVE— the key for everything! If I love you, I consider you to be God’s creation—a human being. I respect you as that. Evil won’t come into my mind for you. When God gives you that love, you cherish a human being for what they are. Love is the motive and key to everything.”

As one with direct experience of God making the ‘impossible’ possible through prayer, Mr. Tidd has high visions for the Outreach Centre— “to put this program where God would like to see it and I would like to see it . . . that the organization will get that piece of land to build and plant and own. It will have a reform house for anyone who desires a change in life. The gates will be open and the intake officer will be there to receive you.”

Local History ~ 1943

St Stephen's College - Princes Town

In 1943, the Reverend Bindley Taylor started a private school in St Clement's, Naparima, which was moved to Princes Town in 1955.

On April 18, 1956, Bishop's High School was opened, incorporating the private school and with Bindley Taylor acting as unpaid Principal.

In 1958, the school was recognized by the Ministry of Education, and in 1959 Mr. Dipchand Maharaj became Principal, and the school became known as St. Stephen's College.

Until 1960, it was housed in a dilapidated wooden building on the Naparima-Mayaro Road.

It then moved into new buildings, shaped like a Greek Amphitheatre.

Red and black brick combined with grey and yellow woodwork to create a striking appearance.

Local Peewah ~ Health Benefits

Peewah is considered so valuable because it provides a storehouse of energy, which can replace common culinary staples that provide carbohydrates, like potatoes.

In fact, the consistency and texture of cooked Peewah is similar to a sweet potato.

Peewah is usually not eaten raw, as it has a rather strong, acidic taste, but when cooked, it can be dried into meal or flour to be used at a later time.

The raw fruit does not stay ripe for very long, and should be eaten or cooked soon after being picked.

Economically, it is important both as an export crop, but also because it can replace some of the other overexploited species of exotic fruits that have received global attention in recent years, such as acai.

The rich combination of nutrients in Peewah makes it very beneficial for our health in a variety of ways.

Besides being a delicious addition to a fruit basket, Peewah are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds that make it an ideal component of a healthy diet. Peewah contain significant levels of fiber, carbohydrates, vitamin C, E, A, B, and K, as well as potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, and zinc.

Health Benefits of Peewah

Energy Booster:

Peewah is perhaps best known for acting as an energy reserve. This energy-boosting fruit packs a whopping 37 grams of carbohydrates in every 100 grams. Carbohydrates are the building blocks of our energy supply, and by breaking down these carbohydrates, our body is able to refuel itself very quickly. For this very reason, Peewah is often turned to as a quick energy booster in South American countries, and this very effective carb-loading tool is becoming more popular in other countries as well.

Digestive Health:

As with most fruits and vegetables, Peewah is a very good source of dietary fiber, which impacts our body in a number of ways. When it comes to digestion, fiber facilitates the smooth digestion of food and eliminates constipation. It can reduce excess gas and bloating as well, while also helping to prevent more serious gastrointestinal conditions, like gastric ulcers and colon cancer.

Heart Health and Diabetes:

Fiber continues to serve the body in terms of diabetes, as it can help to regulate the insulin and glucose production activities by affecting those levels in the bloodstream. By slowing down the release of glucose into the bloodstream and optimizing the functions of the pancreas, peewah fiber can help to reduce the effects of diabetes, or prevent it from developing in the first place. When it comes to heart health, fiber clears out excess cholesterol from the blood vessels and arteries, thereby lowering the chances of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Vision Health:

One of the most important vitamins found in Peewah is vitamin A, as well as other carotenoids that help protect the body. Carotenes are essential for vision health, as they act as antioxidants to reduce or eliminate cataracts, while also preventing macular degeneration in the ocular cells.

Skin Protection:

When it comes to keeping our body’s largest organ protected, vitamin C, vitamin A, and a healthy fluid balance in the body can be very effective. Peewah possesses both of those antioxidant vitamins that can stimulate the regrowth of new skin cells and protect the ones that are there, while the potassium levels in Peewah ensure a proper water balance in the body and facilitate the exchange of fluid to cells to keep them functioning at an optimal level.

Growth and Development:

Peewah is especially recommended for children, as it is ideal for spurring proper growth and development. Aside from its balanced composition of vitamins and minerals, Peewah also has proteins and other organic compounds that are essential for growth. Furthermore, for pregnant mothers, the folic acid levels in peach palm make it great for protecting against neural tube defect

The wood obtained from the Jamun tree is extremely strong and is used in the fabrication of train sleepers.

A Jamun trees flowers from March to April.

The flowers are fragrant and small, about 5 mm in diameter.

The fruits develop by May or June and are very much like large berries in appearance.
