'T&T in a major tailspin, stop disrespecting citizens, get to work'
THE Downtown Owners and Merchants Association has called on the authorities to get from behind their desks and provide citizens with security following the murder of attorney Randall Hector on Old Year’s Day.
“We do not need more press conferences and media statements...get out from your ministerial offices from your opposition benches and from your desks in various headquarters and get down into the police stations to find out what is happening and what is not happening and what assistance can be provided,” DOMA stated in a release yesterday. The Association stressed that the time for talk had ended, and action was desperately needed.
DOMA called on all persons within the State “from captain to cook” to bring this country to some measure of safety and security.
“Get all hands on deck from captain to cook and bring this country within some measure of safety and peace for the great majority of these of our citizens whose spirits are diminished by the lack of respect for their intelligence which is on full display with every word that is spoken in all your conferences and media events. We want action and results—we make this call in honour of the life of attorney Hector and the multitude of decent citizens of Trinidad and Tobago,” the release stated.
DOMA reported during the first 48 hours of the new year it had received dozens of calls from concerned citizens who were in a state of disbelief over the murder toll, the killing of Hector, and the state of emergency.
‘Unspeakable horror’
“Disbelief is a completely understandable reaction to the simultaneous contradictory events taking place in Trinidad and Tobago. Simultaneous with the news that the past year was our country’s most murderous are official comments that the TTPS has made progress in 2024. Simultaneous with the unspeakable horror of a highly respected and noble state attorney being assassinated in full view of his two young children and hundreds of parishioners is the news that it was this event itself that may have prompted the state of emergency with no information as to why attorney Hector was not being protected.
“We do not want to add to an already serious situation of despair and disbelief and have given consideration to not stating that our country is now in the midst of another major crisis. We are not, however, given to disrespecting the intelligence of the citizens of our country with such statements. Trinidad and Tobago is today, in our view, particularly following the events of the past five days, in a major tailspin. No explanations or conferences can quell the despair and apprehension which is building rapidly across all strata of Trinidad and Tobago society. A massive sense of urgency should already have been on display with respect to the assassination of State Prosecutor Hector. Such urgency should have been shown if only to communicate to the national community that the Government is feeling the emergency that the citizens are feeling,” the release stated.
The Association was also critical of the continued retorts from officials that crime was a “whole of society” problem.
“We are on record as having been supportive and constructive in our remarks and interaction with the TTPS. We, therefore, feel entitled to state boldly that more is now expected from our men and women in blue. Most of all please take stock of the claims of success that are offensive to the citizens who are cowering in fear...remarks about crime being a ‘whole of society problem’ are a disrespect to the huge majority of the hardworking, decent people of our country,” the release added.

The aforementioned regulations prohibit people from influencing public opinion in a manner likely to be prejudicial to public safety and order and empower the police to arrest, detain, and charge alleged offenders.
If eventually convicted, offenders face a maximum penalty of a $100,000 fine and five years imprisonment.

Maybe detain them for the 48 hrs allowed by law but make a deal in exchange for knowledge about where the guns and ammunition are.
Problem with this is they don't fear lock up or jail. Jail comes across as a vacation to them. It easy to get a phone , fast food , weed etc when you grease the right wheels. Corruption could never doneredmanjp wrote:And we detained some ppl during the 2011 SOE and they filed lawsuits against the State.

Go take your meds and relax yourself. Use your age and wisdom to encourage people to vote for change, not exchange. Or take a lil read of the daily mail.bluefete wrote:Everbody brakesing and putting all kinds of fake news - again I ask:
What is the name of the "bigshot" PNM lawyer who put the hit on Hector more than 2 years ago?
