The man who pumped five bullets, at close range, into the head and body of Senior Counsel Dana Seetahal has been identified as one of three men killed in a police shootout at Freeport on Wednesday. Senior police officers who are directly involved in Seetahal’s murder probe confirmed yesterday that David “Junior” Baker, 28, was one of the key suspects involved in the well-planned assassination.
The officers spoke on the strict condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to disclose the sensitive information relating to the case. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Glenn Hackett offered no comment when questioned about Baker’s involvement in Seetahal’s murder yesterday. But police said Baker’s death has not seriously affected their investigations into the murder.
Commenting on the development, Seetahal’s sister, Susan Francois, the director of the Financial Intelligence Unit, said: “If he (Baker) was one of the persons involved then I would hope the police would move speedily to get the others involved and bring them to justice.
“Do they want a repeat of the Selwyn Richardson result?” she asked.
Richardson, 59, a former attorney general and minister of national security, was shot dead by two hitmen in his Cascade driveway on June 20, 1995.
Two men identified as his assassins, Jamaat al Muslimeen members Abdul Quadir and Curtis Felix, were both themselves murdered days after Richardson’s killing. No one has ever been brought to justice for Richardson’s killing.
Seetahal, 58, who worked closely with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as the lead prosecutor for several high-profile cases, was ambushed shorly after midnight on May 4 along Hamilton Holder Street, Woodbrook, as she made her way to her One Woodbrook Place apartment.
She also worked closely with the United States Embassy giving advice on key proposals to reform the criminal justice system.
Seetahal’s murder sent shockwaves across the criminal justice system, crippling key office-holders with fear and prompting acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams to assemble one of the most diverse and experienced investigative teams to solve it.
Williams is on record as saying Seetahal’s murder is the number one priority of the Police Service. The team includes personnel from the Homicide Bureau, Criminal Gang Intelligence Unit, Cyber Crime Unit, Special Branch and the Strategic Services Agency. The investigators are being assisted by data analysts and other technical experts, including agents from the US Federal Bureau of Investigations and other experts from the United Kingdom.
Within hours of Seetahal’s murder CrimeStoppers offered a $1 million bounty for information leading to the successful arrest and prosecution of those responsible. That figure was increased to $3.5 million by the Government. That reward remains unclaimed.
Details of hit
Investigations have so far revealed that Seetahal was followed after she left the Ma Pau casino on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, and was ambushed near the Woodbrook Youth Facility and killed.
Police said a panel van, which had been parked near the youth facility blocked her path, and two men, one armed with an assault rifle and another with a handgun, walked up to her Volkswagen Touareg.
The man with the machine gun fired several shots in the air, leaving behind close to 15 spent 5.56 ammunition shells, while the other, now identified as Baker, stood near the driver’s door and fired repeatedly at his target.
Forensic analysis revealed that the shots were fired so close that gunpowder residue was found on Seetahal’s face and clothing.

An 18-year-old man is dead, killed by an air guardsman of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, following an attempted robbery in Carenage yesterday morning.
According to police reports, shortly after midnight yesterday, five men, including the Air Guard officer, were fishing at Carenage Bay when they were approached by two men.
The two enquired from the group if they had any additional bait to share. However, during the course of their conversation, one of the two assailants pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the group, while announcing a robbery.
The air guardsman pulled out a licensed firearm which he had on his person and fired shots in the general direction of the two men.
The two assailants fled the scene into the forested area near the bay.
The police were notified and a party of officers from the Western Division, under the supervision of Senior Supt Ishmael David, visited the scene and combed the area for the assailants.
A short distance away from where the incident took place, the officers found the body of 18-year-old Keron Joseph, of Mt Pleasant Road, Carenage, lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
He was pronounced dead on the scene by a district medical officer and his body ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James, where an autopsy was performed by forensic pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov.
At the centre yesterday, Joseph’s relatives said they were still trying to come to terms with the incident, but they believed Joseph’s death was a result of the company he kept.
Joseph’s father, Michael, noted that his son was a “good boy” who “fell in with the wrong company”.
“He wasn’t bad, you know. He was a good boy usually. He loved football and music. It’s just that he was harden and fall into the wrong company and no matter what you tell him he wasn’t listening to you.
“I had a problem with him liming with some of the boys in the area because the things they stand for now is not what I stood for. But he didn’t listen at all to me.
“If things did indeed take place the way that the police said and he was killed during a robbery, then I really don’t know who to blame,” said Michael Joseph.

A SECURITY GUARD shot and killed a bandit on Saturday after the man attempted to rob the guard’s workplace.
Police reports are that around 9 p.m., the deceased and two others went to Phoenix Restaurant and Bar, Bonne Aventure Road, Gasparillo, and announced a robbery.
Police said the guard who was on duty fired shots at the men, killing one.
A resident living nearby said the three men arrived in a vehicle, two armed with cutlasses and one with a gun. They fired several shots on the ground while announcing a hold-up. The resident said the security guard pulled out a revolver and fired four shots at the men.
Police said the other two escaped in a waiting vehicle, but were later arrested in Princes Town.
Yesterday, the resturant and bar remained closed, although a sign read “Open on Sundays”.
Another resident told the Express he was at church when the shooting took place.
“I got a text from my daughter saying, ‘Don’t come home now, robbery in progress.’ That was around 8.30 p.m. I came home about ten minutes after and I saw police, caution tape and a body lying on the ground,” he said.
“I later heard that the security officer was inside when the three men went in, annouced a hold-up and asked everybody to drop down. The officer was in the back at the time and he fired shots. When the man collapsed, his partners held on to him and dragged him outside and ran.”
The resident said since the Chinese restaurant opened five years ago, it became very popular and it was the first time a shooting took place in the area.
