New high
FCB rise to second in UEFA coefficient ranking
12.09.2012

A week ahead of Bayern’s 2012/13 Champions League opener against Valencia, the Munich giants are celebrating a significant leap forward in the ranking of UEFA club coefficients. For the first time ever, Germany’s most successful club have climbed to second place, behind only Barcelona and ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Bayern have 114.865 points, the second-best total after Barca (134.690). United lie third (113.907), followed by Champions League holders Chelsea (111.907), Real (111.690) and Arsenal (96.907). The second-best German club are Schalke (66.865) in 18th place. Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund (32.865) are currently 60th on the list.

Rummenigge expresses pride

“We’re very proud of where we stand in the current coefficient list,” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge informed fcbayern.de. However, the chairman warned that the new best placing represented “an obligation on us to have another successful season in the Champions League.”

The UEFA club coefficient ranking is based on results in the Champions League and Europa League in the last five years. The coefficients are calculated from the points thus earned, plus a 20 percent weighting based on the national association’s coefficient over the same period. The rankings are used to seed clubs in draws for European competition.

Bayern 3 Mainz 1
Bayern maintain perfect start with merited win
15.09.2012

Both Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery were missing, but Bayern still fashioned a victory over Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday and warmed up well for the midweek Champions League meeting with Spanish giants Valencia. Jupp Heynckes’ men looked sharp and dangerous for long spells as the Reds set off into a sequence of seven games in 22 days by maintaining their perfect start to the domestic campaign.

The 71,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw Mario Mandzukic put the home side in front with the opening goal after just 101 seconds, before Bastian Schweinsteiger doubled the score a shade over ten minutes later. The men in red, possibly mindful of the European clash just a few days from now, eased back almost immediately and effortlessly protected the lead through to the break.

The visitors had hardly had a kick but perked up after the break and pulled one back just short of the hour through an Adam Szalai penalty. The game livened up considerably, but both Mandzukic and Thomas Müller saw shots come back off the goal frame, before Toni Kroos volleyed home the last kick of the match from a Javi Martinez cross to round off the afternoon in style.

A third win in three Bundesliga fixtures cements Bayern’s place at the top of the early standings on nine points, ahead of a clutch of clubs two points further back. The win is a boost at the start of the typically packed early autumn period, and ahead of two very challenging appointments, the opening Champions League fixture in Munich on Wednesday, and the always tricky trip to Gelsenkirchen giants Schalke next Saturday.

Confident Bayern happy to see Valencia again

MUNICH (AP)
Bayern Munich will begin its Champions League campaign against Valencia on Wednesday full of confidence after its best start to a season in 12 years - when it went on to win the European title against the Spanish team.

Bayern's dramatic loss on penalties to Chelsea in the Champions League final May prompted the German powerhouse to embark on a spending spree. It then won its first five competitive matches of the season with a club record 12 goals from its opening three Bundesliga games.

''It was a game that you never forget, it stays with you a lifetime,'' Bayern defender Holger Badstuber said of the match against Chelsea. ''It was a heavy blow but we've coped with it. Every player took his own conclusions from it. It should spur us on and not hamper us. It's a new season now. We have new targets to aim for.''

Bayern last won the Champions League in 2001, when Mauricio Pellegrino - now Valencia coach - missed the decisive spot kick in the final to give the Germans their fourth title.

''It was a huge disappointment from a sporting point of view, absolutely,'' the 40-year-old Pellegrino told Kicker magazine ahead of his European debut as coach. ''But it's also a good memory, because I was there for one of Valencia's biggest nights.''

French side Lille hosts Belarusian champion BATE Borisov in Group F's other match.

Bayern defeated Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup to end its two-year trophy drought in August, and then enjoyed a 4-0 win over Jahn Regensburg in the German Cup before getting its league campaign off to a perfect start.

''It can go on like that. It should go on like that,'' Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said.

Bayern's last - and only - loss at home to a Spanish team in the competition came 10 years ago, when Deportivo La Coruna recorded a 3-2 win. The Bavarian team has 13 wins to show from 19 home games with Spanish sides.

Valencia has only won once in 11 games in Germany, five years ago against Schalke.

But no Bayern player is underestimating Valencia, most likely the Germans' chief rival to top the group.

''They're a very good team, not Madrid or Barcelona, but not very far off,'' said Arjen Robben, who looks to have overcome a troublesome lower back injury to play.

Franck Ribery, who also missed Bayern's 3-1 Bundesliga win over Mainz on Saturday, is also likely to play after overcoming muscular problems.

''They trained well and completed the whole workload. I think they're able to play,'' Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said after Tuesday's training session.

However, Mario Gomez, who last season scored 13 Champions League goals, is still out after undergoing surgery on his left angle. Defenders David Alaba, Rafinha and Diego Contento are also ruled out.

Offseason signing Mario Mandzukic is proving himself an able deputy for Gomez, contributing six goals in the five games while the Germany striker is absent. Peru striker Claudio Pizarro can also step up if needed.

Bastian Schweinsteiger played his second straight full league game on Saturday and seems to have put his injury worries behind him, while record-signing Javi Martinez came on with 15 minutes remaining against Mainz to set up Bayern's third goal.

''I think he could play (against Valencia). He's improving from day to day and has (gained) the acceptance of the other players,'' Heynckes said.

Pellegrino has bigger injury worries than Heynckes, with defender David Albelda, midfielder Fernando Gago and winger Pablo Piatti all out.

After drawing at Real Madrid in its opening game, Valencia earned a much-needed first victory in the Spanish league on Saturday when it beat promoted Celta Vigo 2-1.

''The team arrives in good form to Wednesday's game in Munich,'' Pellegrino said. ''We have to take the smallest chances up front and stay fully concentrated at the back. Above all, we have to pace ourselves for the whole game.''

Lille and BATE Borisov are meeting for the first time and the French side hopes it can improve its defense after a lackluster start to the league.

Little drew 1-1 at newly promoted Troyes on Saturday after conceding a sloppy equalizer with two minutes remaining in a match it had dominated.

''We've conceded at least one goal per game since the league started,'' Lille coach Rudi Garcia said. ''But in terms of commitment and team spirit I have nothing to reproach the players for. We just need to try and push forward more, we need to be more consistent.''

Lille has only one defeat in 12 Champions League home games, which have yielded just three wins.

Three and easy for Bayern

Bayern Munich celebrate against Wolfsburg
Bayern Munich made it five wins out of five at the start of the Bundesliga season with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena.

Jupp Heynckes' side were even able to take it easy in a one-sided game after Bastian Schweinsteiger put them in front midway through the first half.

Two headed goals from former Wolfsburg striker Mario Mandzukic in the second half sealed all three points for Bayern, who moved two points clear at the top of the table with their seventh win out of seven in all competitions.

Schweinsteiger should have scored in the second minute, but he managed to hit the ball against the post from a yard out with the whole of the goal to aim at after Wolfsburg failed to clear a corner.

The Germany international hit the woodwork again in the 18th minute with a shot from distance beating Diego Benaglio, but not his right-hand post.

It was a case of third time lucky for Schweinsteiger, who put Bayern in front in the 24th minute, stroking the ball through the legs of Benaglio after Franck Ribery pulled the ball back to him from the goal-line.

Wolfsburg began the second half with a bit more life about them after failing to test Manuel Neuer on a single occasion in the first half.

Former Bayern striker Ivica Olic got in two shots on goal before Bayern gained a deserved lead in the 57th minute.

Xherdan Shaqiri used all of his strength to power his way down the left wing and get in a cross for Mandzukic, who rose above the half-hearted attempt at a challenge by Rodriguez and headed in from close range.

Eight minutes later, Mandzukic made it three with another header, this time from Philipp Lahm's cross from the right, and this time against Naldo.

There was never going to be a way back into the game for Wolfsburg and Bayern were able to move down the gears to save their energy for Werder Bremen at the weekend, and BATE Borisov in the Champions League next week.

Bayern notch sixth straight win

Luiz Gustavo opened the scoring for Bayern
Bayern Munich left it late to win 2-0 and continue their perfect start to the season with a sixth straight Bundesliga win at Werder Bremen.

Luiz Gustavo and Mario Mandzukic scored the goals in the last 10 minutes as Jupp Heynckes' side extended their lead at the top of the table with an eighth win in eight competitive games this season.

Although Bremen had matched the Bavarians for much of the game, their late collapse cost them dearly as they slumped to 11 points behind their opponents.

Claudio Pizarro was named in the Bayern starting XI against his former club with Mandzukic left on the bench as part of Heynckes' rotation policy.

Arjen Robben did not even travel to Bremen due to a knock, possibly also rested ahead of the midweek Champions League clash with BATE Borisov.

Dante thought he had put Bayern in front after half an hour with a looping header which went in off the right-hand post, but the linesman's flag was raised to deny the Bayern defender his first goal of the season.

Franck Ribery came close to breaking the deadlock in the 49th minute, but his shot bounced out to safety off the inside of the left-hand post.

In the 55th minute, Kevin De Bruyne's shot from distance was saved by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Ribery continued to cause trouble in and around the area, sending two shots wide of Mielitz's goal before Nils Petersen, on loan at Bremen from Bayern, missed a good chance at the other end.

Bremen's resistance finally broke in the 81st minute when Thomas Muller pulled the ball back to Gustavo, who did not appear to be posing too great a threat more than 20 yards out, but he lifted a shot over Mielitz with his left foot to give Bayern the lead.

Mandzukic made it 2-0 just minutes later when they broke after a Bremen corner was cleared with Ribery sending Xherdan Shaqiri down the left and his low cross was met by the Croatian forward, who had the goal gaping and was not going to miss it from 10 yards out.

Bayern wary of overconfidence against BATE Borisov
MINSK, BELARUS (AP)
Shortly after Bayern Munich equaled its club record by starting the season with nine straight wins in all competitions, sporting director Matthias Sammer criticized the team for a lack of effort in the 2-0 victory at Werder Bremen.

''It wasn't good enough until we scored the opening goal, we have to be clear about that,'' Sammer said. ''It's not always about judging the result.''

Despite the critique, the Bundesliga club can beat that 1984-85 record on Tuesday against BATE Borisov in the Champions League.

Bayern left for Minsk - where BATE Borisov plays its European games - without the injured Arjen Robben, who is still laboring with muscle problems.

BATE surprised many by beating Lille 3-1 in the opening round. It was the six-time Belarusian champion's first Champions League group stage win in 13 attempts.

''It'll be a difficult game,'' Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said at Monday's news conference. ''This is an opponent that's very well organized, that has very good players and that won impressively in Lille.''

Heynckes called on his players to produce the same football they have played from the start of the season.

''Then we'll have every likelihood of winning tomorrow,'' the 67-year-old coach said.

Both Lille and Valencia, which lost at Bayern 2-1, will be looking for their first points when they meet in Group F's other match.

Sammer's criticism is being taken as timely check on rising euphoria following Bayern's blistering start to the season.

''What Matthias said pleased me very much,'' Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said before boarding the flight to Minsk. ''We shouldn't make the mistake of being lulled into complacency. And Matthias is one who recognizes this danger.''

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said Sammer and Heynckes spoke with the players ''and we all know that we can do better.''

Bayern's unrelenting drive is fueled by the trauma of finishing second in three competitions last season, losing out to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and German Cup final, but above all by the pain of that Champions League final loss to Chelsea on penalties in Bayern's stadium last May.

''There's a huge motivation to win the (Champions League) title,'' Toni Kroos told Kicker magazine on Monday. ''Chelsea is dealt with, crossed off. You'll never forget it because there'll never be a better chance to win this title.''

Kroos has been Bayern's outstanding player of the season so far as the midfielder finally starts living up to the promise which prompted the German powerhouse to sign him as a 16-year-old youngster in 2006.

''I simply tried to take things from last season, which was already very good, and to improve myself in certain areas,'' Kroos said. ''I was fit going into the season and so you can expect such performances from me, as I expect them from myself.''

Bayern has never played a team from Belarus before and Kroos said he was expecting an ''uncomfortable game.''

''There are hardly any games for Bayern where you say beforehand you'd be happy with a draw,'' Kroos said. ''We're favorites and we want to win there. But I also don't know the team that well. Their 3-1 win in Lille was a declaration.''

Mario Mandzukic will be expected to lead the line in attack in the absence of Germany striker Mario Gomez, who has yet to play this season after undergoing surgery on his left ankle on Aug. 7.

Gomez scored 12 Champions League goals last season, plus another in qualifying, but has been barely missed as Mandzukic has chipped in nine goals in Bayern's nine games so far.

BATE midfielder Alexander Hleb will be familiar to many of the Bayern players from his spells at Stuttgart and Wolfsburg, where he played alongside Mandzukic.

Borisov warmed up for Tuesday's game with a 5-1 win over Neman Grodno on Friday.

''We're in good form, and the win is a confidence booster for the Bayern match,'' Borisov midfielder Renan Bressan said.

Both Valencia and Lille have endured difficult starts to their respective seasons, with the French side arguably in greater need of a confidence booster as it travels to Spain.

''It feels like we're cursed at the moment,'' Lille coach Rudi Garcia said Friday's 2-0 loss to Rennes - his side's fifth straight match without a win.

Lille will likely be without central midfielder and captain Rio Mavuba, who limped off with a knee injury against Rennes, while former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou and midfielder Marvin Martin are out through thigh and groin problems, respectively.

But central defender Franck Beria should be available after recovering from a back injury.

Valencia got a much-needed second league win with a 2-0 victory over Zaragoza on Saturday, but the side is yet to settle down under new coach Manuel Pellegrino.

well I saw the match and we dominated in possession and goal scoring opportunities....we hit the woodwork TWICE....

Bate converted their chances while we squandered ours.....Toni Kroos actually rounded the keeper and miss the empty goal.....

I am dissappointed but this is champions league afterall, and I hope Bayern will stop throwing away chances and start being more clinical

Congrats to Bate Borisov! BUT it aint over by a great deal!

Every game Bayern squanders several chances........while some teams only need a few (Chelsea and last CL).....Bate were really impressive absorbing the pressure and world class on the counter....We were too casual in the first 20 mins throwing away chance after chance until they stunned us with that first goal....that didnt stop us from continuing to throw away genuine opportunities all into the 2nd half....then came the second....we pull one back ....then came the third

Heynckes: Let’s get back to winning ways
05.10.2012

The first truly gruelling phase of the 2012/13 campaign, with seven games in three weeks, is coming to an end. Bayern have slipped just once, in the unlucky 3-1 midweek Champions League defeat away to BATE Borisov, but have otherwise won every match. The Bundesliga leaders entertain TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday (Live in English from 3.30 pm CET on FCB.tv Web Radio) looking to maintain or extend their advantage in the table prior to the two-week international break.

“It’s important we build up a head of steam against Hoffenheim, give it everything – and win,” urged chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Three points against the side lying ninth in the standings would mean Bayern setting a new record for the best start to a Bundesliga season. In the league’s 49 previous seasons, only three clubs have won their first seven games, FCB being one of them. However, no team has also had such a good goal difference at this point in the season.
VIDEOS

Coach Jupp Heynckes urged his men to forget the mishap in Minsk last Tuesday - “my players know what was lacking” – and think instead about recent fine displays in the league: “We need to get back to winning ways and summon up the things which made us strong.” The 67-year-old has ordered his troops to improve their pressing game and switching between defence and attack, and said he was “very confident” the team would do just that.

The line-up will not include Arjen Robben (hamstring), and Franck Ribéry is doubtful with a tight calf. David Alaba is training with the team again but is not yet match fit, and Mario Gomez is deep into a sports rehab programme. Otherwise, all the players are available for selection.

Heynckes delighted for Usami

That’s a good thing, as Hoffenheim have recovered from a disastrous start to the campaign and taken seven points from their last three matches. “They’ve recovered their confidence and poise, they get the ball forward very quickly from defence, and on top of all that, they have some very good players,” warned Heynckes.

Former FCB man Takashi Usami has starred for Hoffenheim in recent games and has two Bundesliga goals to his name. “I think it’s great,” said Heynckes. The Japanese talent failed to make the breakthrough at Bayern last term, but his training ground displays demonstrated his immense ability as a footballer, “and he’s really blossoming in Hoffenheim now,” Heynckes observed.

Babbel: It’s for Boris

Visiting coach Markus Babbel is without keeper Tim Wiese (groin); backup goalie Koen Casteels is again expected to deputise. Sejad Salihovic was red-carded last week and is suspended, and Brazilian defender Chris is injured. Germany U-21 international Boris Vukcevic, whose serious road traffic accident cast a long shadow over the German footballing world last week, is still being kept in an artificial coma.

“It’s a very tough task for us. But we’ll carry on with full power, because it’s for Boris,” commented Babbel, who is hoping his team can build on good victories over Hannover and Stuttgart. “We want to continue along this path. We’ll need a large measure of tactical discipline and a willingness to run.”

Vukcevic’ horrific accident has also made a mark at Bayern, Heynckes reported: “You can see it’s had an impact on the team. We’re all turning it over in our minds.” However, once the referee blows for kick-off, football will be the focus on Saturday. Heynckes and his players have enjoyed a very good first stage of the season-long marathon, and are determined to extend another important streak: neither the coach nor his current club have ever finished on the losing side in a competitive match against Hoffenheim.

Ribéry doubtful
Robben ruled out of Hoffenheim clash
05.10.2012

Bayern will be without Arjen Robben in Saturday afternoon’s home meeting with 1899 Hoffenheim. The Dutch winger is still struggling with the hamstring problem which prevented him appearing in the recent matches against Borisov and Wolfsburg. “It's a real shame he won't be in the team tomorrow," Jupp Heynckes said on Friday.

After the team’s return from Minsk on Wednesday afternoon, Robben resumed the squad training programme. “He was in outstanding form for 40 or 45 minutes," Heynckes revealed, “and then he suddenly told me he was feeling the same pain in the same place." Robben immediately broke off the session and reported to chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt. A week earlier, in the home meeting with Wolfsburg, the player was substituted after sensing the injury.

Heynckes is now hoping Arjen can use the two-week international break “to regain 100 percent fitness, and return for our next Bundesliga match." Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has not called the winger up for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Romania.

Ribéry doubtful

Franck Ribéry is also a doubt for the Hoffenheim clash. The Frenchman has a tight calf after taking a knock in Minsk last Tuesday. The definite absentees are Mario Gomez (sports rehab training) and David Alaba (stress fracture).

Alaba is at least back in training with the rest of the team. “I can kick the ball properly again and it doesn't hurt," the 20-year-old was reported as saying in the Austrian press. “Naturally I still lack 10 to 20 percent in terms of freshness and ball control, which is why I'm doing extra training."

Friendly next Thursday

Speeding up Alaba's recovery is one of the reasons Heynckes has arranged a friendly for next Thursday, 11 October. “All the players who are here and fit will play, including David, I hope," said the coach. After the workout, Heynckes will speak with Austria coach Marcel Koller “and discuss whether it makes sense for him to join up with the national team." The Austrians play Kazakhstan in Vienna on 16 October, but Alaba is currently only on standby for the game.
