In a TED talk held last month, Cydia creator Saurik said that only about 10% percent of iPhone users jailbreak their iPhones. One of the biggest reason why people don’t jailbreak their iPhones is because of the increased security concerns, which may effect their private and confidential data stored on the device.

While jailbreakers are encouraged to change their default root password, it still doesn’t make the jailbroken iOS devices secured as much as the non-jailbroken ones because of all the security protections that Apple has put in the place.

But now, a hacker named Stefan Esser has found a new method which promises to jailbreak iOS devices with all the enhanced security mechanisms in place so that the jailbroken iOS devices are secured as much, or even more than the non-jailbroken ones. This new method uses ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) which has been absent from all the current iOS devices, making them vulnerable to attacks such as the ones demonstrated at Pwn2Own contest.

Stefan plans to unveil a new jailbreak tool called Antid0te which will automatically jailbreak and fortify iOS devices with ASLR.

This enables users with jailbroken iPhones to create their own set of dyld_shared_cache files that have completely different library load addresses from every other iPhone in the world,” Esser wrote in an email. “This is already a better ASLR than what exists on Snow Leopard because different applications can use different shared caches and therefore different load addresses.

Apple Kills Jailbreak Detection API in iOS 4.2
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2374221,00.asp

And just like that, Apple's methods for detecting jailbroken iPhones went up in smoke. We're referring, of course, to the jailbreak detection API that the company recently introduced as part of its iOS 4 update. Lasting a mere six months, the detection API is now gone as of iOS version 4.2, forcing device management vendors to turn to alternate approaches to detect jailbroken devices.
There's been no reason as to why the switch occurred on Apple's end. However, the company has always found itself in a kind of cat-and-mouse battle throughout the iPhone's existence—just as soon as it unveils a new method for protecting phones or, in this case, alerting users to jailbroken devices, enterprising iPhone hackers seem to find a way to work around Apple's techniques.
"It may be feasible to detect jailbreaks of a specific version or type, but they will still be trapped in the cat and mouse game they play with jailbreakers," said Jeremy Allen, principal consultant with Intrepidus Group, in an interview with NetworkWorld.
"Whatever they add to detect the jailbreak, if it is to be queried from the iOS kernel, it must be accessible and have the ability to be changed. Meaning, if it is going to be a useful detection method it can also be circumvented. It is a fairly intractable problem to solve one-hundred-percent," he added.
In this case, the specific API allowed mobile device management applications to essentially query the iPhone itself and ask the device whether it's been jailbroken or not. That's made possible by the fact that a number of jailbreaks change specific files used by the operating system and, as well, exploit the underlying code in some fashion. This "unlocks" the iPhone and allows users to install third-party applications not otherwise found in the App Store or, crazier yet, full-fledged OS replacement s and other more advanced tweaks.
Once an iPhone coughed up the fact that it had been jailbroken using Apple's API, an enterprise application could take actions to prevent the offending (and possibly unsecure) device from connecting up to a corporate network or email server. As well, a centralized IT department could be notified that a device was modified in an unauthorized fashion.
That said, mobile device management applications do have other ways of checking for jailbroken phones that don't themselves rely on Apple's now-defunct API. For example, an application can attempt to perform functions within iOS that are otherwise forbidden by the software on a standard iPhone. If the application is successful, then it knows that said device has been tweaked by the end user.

iPhone 4 Unlock Update: Ultrasn0w Unlock or The Baseband Downgrade in 10 Days Time?

Couple of new updates on the whole Unlock for iPhone 4 Baseband 2.10.04. We have been trying to keep you updated for sometime on this, so that you guys stop thinking about throwing this awesome piece of equipment. We have been watching the developers closely and are trying to get some insights for you on the progress of iPhone 4 unlock.

The last update was about Sherif Hashim forwarding the 02.10.04 baseband crashes to MuscleNerd and he promised to give us a solution very soon. That was some two three weeks ago and just last night when MuscleNerd was asked about the progress on Twitter he said something like this:

Image

@MuscleNerd hey buddy anything about 02.10.04 baseband unlock for iph 4?

@tinnux @raphaelwcosta any news that’s not too nerdy, I will be sure to tweet…no need to ask

@MuscleNerd ok thanks! I hope you can tell us something before Xmas!!

@tinnux if nothing else, I promise to at least tell you more (even if nerdy) before Xmas (but trying to do a lot more than that!)

So he’ll be able to tell us something nerdy or not too nerdy before Christmas. I think what he means is he is not going to be all technical on this but instead he would just give us an update on the progress or the actual solution.

Now there is more to this, like we mentioned in one of our earlier posts that The Dev Team is also trying to find a Baseband Downgrade Solution for iPhone 3GS, 3G and possibly iPhone 4. We all know how the iPhone 3GS and 3G baseband update of 06.15.00 is causing issues like battery drain and GPS and The Dev Team is trying to find a fix for that. We also mentioned that there is a possibility that The Dev Team might announce a Baseband Downgrade Solution for iPhone 4 on Baseband 2.10.04. Downgrading the baseband to an earlier version would help unlocking your iPhone 4.

Here is MuscleNerd, when asked about the downgrade option:

Image

Image

So these are some latest updates on Unlock for iPhone 4 Baseband 2.10.04. He did mention that he is onto something and he is planning on giving us the solution in next 10 days or a straight NO on our faces. I hope it’s the first thing and I hope you guys would be able to call and greet each other on Christmas Day.

Google Latitude for iPhone is Now Available for Download !

Originally available as a web app only, the official Google Latitude app for iPhone is now finally available for download in the iTunes App Store. For those of you don’t already know, Latitude helps you see where your friends are right now. It also helps you stay in touch with your friends and family by making it easy to share where you are by seeing each other visually on a map.

Image

With Latitude, you can:
* See your friends on a map – find out who’s nearby and meet up.
* Share your location continuously with whomever you choose – help friends and family stay in touch with you, even when you can’t take out your phone.
* Control your privacy – share only city-level location, hide your location, or turn off background updating at any time.

Google Latitude for iPhone also takes advantage of background-ing capability available in iOS 4.x and above. So even if the app is closed or if your screen is turned off, Latitude will continue to update your location in the background.

Google Latitude for iPhone is available for free, and can be downloaded from iTunes App Store.

After making a false start last week, the official Latitude app from Google seems to have stuck its landing in the iTunes App Store. Surprisingly for an initial release, Latitude is already showing a 2.0.0.346 version number demonstrating, perhaps, just how long this one's been waiting for Phil Schiller's sanction. Whatever the case, there's never been a better opportunity for iOS 4 users to track down their very own Ana Leftin.

just for a bit of information!

If you foind yourself getting locked out of your iphone as i did,
3GS previously with 3.12 with old baseband,
locked up and would not work at all.
Update through itunes to IOS 4.2.1 using shift+ restore in itunes,
then download the NEwest beta version of redsnow,
RUn to jail break it,
After successful jailbreak,
YOu HAVE to UPGRADE your BAseband ( because 4.2.1 is NOT unlockable as yet), to the IPADS Baseband 06:15.00, Re-RUn Redsnow again to Unlock!

Voila, you have yourself a 3gs running 4.2.1 UNLOCKED , but tethered jailbreak until they release a full unlock!

This iPhone version of the popular game franchise of 90s offers all the fighters from the original series, along with single player arcade mode. You can also play it with your friends using multiplayer mode over a WiFi or a Bluetooth connection.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for iPhone is available for $6.99, and can be downloaded from iTunes App Store via the link

Digitimes reports that Apple is set to unveil upgrades to both their MacBook Pro and iMac lines in the first half of 2011. The report claims that Apple has four new MacBook Pro models in store and they will feature slightly upgraded designs- a new chassis probably similar to the new MacBook Airs. The report estimates a 30%-40% notebook shipment growth for Apple after the new line of pro portables in launched.

Apple is also set to unveil a new iMac line, according to component makers, that features a new screen size and lower price points. What could this new screen size be? Is Apple going back to the 24 inch size? A 30 inch iMac? The rumored 22 incher with multitouch?! New iMacs at lower price points will probably help Apple bring back the desktop fad. This year was all about new portables (iPad and MacBook Air) and it already appears that next year will be the year of new desktop and pro offerings.

Sony has announced that it will be bringing an official PlayStation app to the iPhone.

I’m very happy to finally be able to announce on the PlayStation.Blog that we will launch the Official PlayStation App very soon. The app will be available to download for iPhone and iPod Touch with OS 4 and above, and most Android compatible handsets with a minimum of OS 1.6.

Features:
● Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
● Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
● Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
● Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

Image

The first version (1.0) will be available free in the following countries: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands.

------

A conversation, secretly taped by the FBI, captured a Flextronics director named Walter Shimoon spilling Apple secrets to an an unnamed "cooperative witness" (CW-2) employed by a hedge fund.

According to FORTUNE the conversation took place on Oct. 1, 2009. Shimoon and three co-defendants were arrested today on several changes of wire fraud and securities fraud.

The indictment reveals some interesting information:
● Apple, he is heard telling CW-2, was "coming out next year" with a new iPhone that's "gonna have two cameras ... It'll be a neat phone because it's gonna have a five-megapixel auto-focus camera and it will have a VGA forward-facing videoconferencing camera." Apple announced the iPhone 4 -- with its two cameras -- eight months later.
● Then he is heard telling CW-2 that "they [Apple] have a code name for something new ... It's totally ... It's a new category altogether... It doesn't have a camera, what I figured out. So I speculated that it's probably a reader. ... Something like that. Um, let me tell you, it's a very secretive program. ... It's called K, K48. That's the internal name. So, you can get, at Apple you can get fired for saying K48." The iPad -- code named K48 -- was unveiled four months later.

Ever wonder whats the story behind Cydia???

Here is Why Cydia Is Called As Cydia..
By Fahad Khan | December 17th, 2010

Cydia is a household name amongst the jailbreak community, but what does the word really mean? and why was it called that? Those of you who have jailbroken iOS devices are very likely to have used Cydia. The credit for this store which brings extra unrestricted functionality to our iOS devices goes to Jay “saurik” Freeman, who happens to be the brains behind this concept.

Cydia is used by millions of iPhone users and may be a very well known application, but not many people know what it means. Cydia is interestingly enough, named after a moth of all things! The Cydia pomonella to be precise, is the scientific name for the “coddling moth” or what is more commonly known as the stereotypical Apple worm.

Image

According to Wikipedia, the Cydia pomonella “has proved to be a problematic pest on several fruit trees, including apples and pears. The caterpillars burrow into the fruit, rendering it un-sellable”. The ironic name of Cydia is therefore fitting, since it has turned out to be quite the worm to Apple’s devices. With each successive iOS release, the term “jailbreak” is becoming more prevalent amongst the average user and that can only be a good thing for development of the replacement packaging and repository manager.

So now you know, the vital tool for your iOS devices jailbreak is named after a moth that is a pest for fruit trees, such as those of apples (fruit) and Apple Inc.

Word Lens is a new augmented reality app for iOS devices that instantly translates printed words from one language to another in real time using the camera on your iPhone. You can point your camera lens at a sign that’s written in Spanish and it will immediately provide an English translation. Word Lens uses text recognition technology to work out what the word or phrase is, then translates it into the new language using automatic translation software and at blistering speed. The translation is even pasted over the original location making it even more impressive.

Of course not every phrase is translated perfectly, since there are differences in languages meaning some words are not grammatically correct but the speed and accuracy of the app’s software is excellent, meaning it should have no trouble translating simple road signs, restaurant menus or anything similar you encounter on your travels.

The app itself is free, with demo options to reverses any word it detect, and to erase the words completely, but the Spanish to English and English to Spanish translation services are $4.99 / £2.99 each via an in app purchase. More languages are expected to be added soon, with word from the developer suggesting plans to incorporate all major European languages starting with French.

This app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod touch (4th generation) and requires iOS 4.0 or later.

The developers behind the popular Air Hockey for iPhone game are working to bring the same title and experience to Mac OS X. Air Hockey on the Mac will be available on the Mac App Store at launch and is almost identical to the iOS version.

The user interface is reported to be fantastic, with super fast loading times and smooth animations like the iOS version. Game opens up in a single window and it seems to work very well with built-in Trackpads in MacBooks, and Apple’s Magic Trackpad.

Check out the video below to see it in action:

------

Earlier this month, Comex of Spirit and JailbreakMe fame confirmed that a more efficient userland-based untethered jailbreak method for iOS 4.2.1 will be released before Christmas 2010.

And now, MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has given further confirmation that a untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.2.1 is indeed in works, and that it will be ready for prime-time use somewhere around Christmas.

scotty6kids78: @MuscleNerd are we any closer to the unteathered #jailbreak for the new #ios4.2 on #iphone4 ?

MuscleNerd: @scotty6kids78 it’ll be here by Xmas (not because we’re sitting waiting for Xmas, but because it’s achievable deadline)

This untethered solution will almost certainly be applicable to all current iOS 4.2.1 devices, including the new A4-based ones which includes iPhone 4, iPad, Apple TV 2G and iPod touch 4G.

We have just been tipped off, by the user himself to an interesting story that he posted over at ModMyi Forums where he bought a new iPad (running iOS 4.2.1) for his lady as a Christmas present, only to find out that he was not able to jailbreak it using the latest version of Redsn0w.

orbyorb: @TaimurAsad Please read http://bit.ly/hJuCSc –limera1n has probably been patched in iOS devices rolling out as of this week.

In case you don’t already know, the current version of Redsn0w uses Geohot’s bootrom based Limera1n exploit to jailbreak all current iOS devices on the latest firmware. Since Limera1n exploit exists in the hardware, only a hardware revision from Apple could have patched it. And if Jack’s findings are true, Apple might have patched it in the new stock of iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G.

I made a trip to the Apple Store today to get an iPad for my old lady (Christmas present). She told me she’d love it jailbroken, so I sat down in front of my computer to redsn0w this 4.2.1 iPad.

One problem–redsn0w 0.9.6b6 could not upload a pwned iBSS (hanged at the white screen on OS X, upload timed out and rebooted into jailed state with Windows).

Furthermore, the device constantly stalls when attempting to dump its bootrom. This leads me to believe the injection vector used via USB has been patched in DFU mode.

Case in point: Any iOS device with a serial number xx050 (this week) or higher might be unable to be jailbroken via the limera1n exploit. Slightly older devices may be invulnerable as well.

So if your new iOS device comes with serial number xx050, there is a high chance that Limera1n is already patched on this device and you may not be able to jailbreak it with current jailbreak tools.

Again, we are not sure if this is indeed the case. Hopefully someone from the Dev-Team will soon shed some light on this.

Some good news for iPhone 4 users who are waiting for an unlock on iOS 4.2.1, baseband 3.10.01 and 2.10.04. The Egyptian based and Neurosurgeon & iPhone Baseband hacker Sherif Hashim has replied to a user on Twitter, confirming of sorts that the unlock for iPhone 4 on the latest firmware and baseband isn’t too far off from release.

Last month, The iPhone Dev-Team released an Ultrasn0w update which enabled iPhone 3G and 3GS users to unlock their devices on iOS 4.2.1 by permanently (for now) upgrading it to iPad’s baseband 06.15.00. Rumor has it that there is soon going to be a way for iPhone 3G and 3GS users to downgrade the baseband back to the original 05.15.04 which ships with iOS 4.2.1 for these older devices.

------

Right now iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads running iOS 4.2.1 can only be Jailbroken via the “tethered” method which means they need to be plugged into your Windows or Mac PC and rebooted via a program, redsn0w. Not just to Jailbreak them, mind you, but anytime you need to reboot your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Forget whether you should Jailbreak or not, tethered Jailbreaks require so many extra steps, do the benefits still make up for the hassle?

Finish jailbreaking. Reboot. Update Cydia. Reboot. Update Cydia again. Reboot. Install a Jailbreak app or tweak. Reboot. Install another. Reboot. Hang or crash. Reboot. Run out of power. Reboot.

And it’s not just a simple reboot, you have to run redsn0w, power off your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, find your firmware on your PC, load the firmware into redsn0w, let it process, make sure you uncheck Jailbreak and check Untethered boot, put your device into DFU mode, then let redsn0w work its tethered reboot magic.

Every. Time.

As Jailbreak Forum members will attest, real hax0rs don’t mind tethered Jailbreaks, but compared to an untethered Jailbreak it’s a pain in the @$$, especially when you have a lot of new, or updated stuff you want to install. But then you get to use things like AirVideoEnabler which lets any AirPlay app send video to Apple TV, among a lot of other very useful apps. And you get to Jailbreak an iPad running iOS 4.2, the first iOS 4 version available for iPad, which is a tremendous upgrade in its own right.

Sure Comex and his miraculous userland exploits will probably make 4.2 an untethered Jailbreak before the end of the year, but iOS 4.2.2 or iOS 4.3 or iOS 5 will eventually come around and, if we want the latest firmware, we might be back to tethered for a while. Is it worth it?
