Hi Max... I too was alarmed at this development but the MoF stated that TTPost will remain open and will distribute Tax Refund cheques to members of the public (u must walk in for them)... what i did before hand though was call my areas TTPost to find out if they were open... the restriction they had in place was only 2 individuals could be there at a time... i got my refund yesterday in under 5 mins... given governments intention to intensify covid restrictions in the coming days i would advise individuals with tax refunds to organize asap as i believe intensify means fines in your as-squared

Same to you max... also stay indoors i really think the government will start imposing fines soon as the budgeted fiscal defict for 2020 was supposed to be 5 billion (i think)... now the MoF say it could be 11/12 billion

I guess it doesn't hurt to live on the same street as the post office.

I to called my areas post office which is Arima. Said they would be open and that income tax refunds will go out as usual to deliver. They did say that things are slow and that if I want, I can give it a week for delivery and if not, come in to collect.
I would rather not go in, so I will wait till next week thursday or so.

The tax return i just got was for 17 when i now started working back in trinidad... i worked 4 months but gov tax me for 12... due to the size of my refund i waited years ... finally get it cause of covid... i filed my 2019 return and gt in about 7/8 working days... most of the posts i assume here now will be those individuals like me whose refund was too large for the gov to give us back

just imagine if they spent even half a billion on testing the whole population and isolation of all positive cases there would be no concern about spread of covid19 and no need for all this lockdown and economic consequences and that would save billions!

16 and 17 filed in 2018 and 2018 filed in 2019 are my three. They basically sat for 2 years on two refunds for no reason only to issue the refund in the amount filed now.

I called them, emailed them and went into the BIR office in town in that time as well

I think the issue is limits on kits... example... one rumour is china too meet the demand for test kits rushed production of some... some of those have since been found to be faulty... i think a few caribbean countried got those... in tnt we somehow got none accodring to the government... lol... it amazes me that after years of free tertiary education governments past and present feel the average man/woman so gullible

Is it that ppl don't declare all their taxable earnings or payroll departments are incompetent in calculating taxes for employees?
I always have mine calculated to the cent so I owe nothing and have nothing to ever get back.
Always of the view I want mine upfront rather than wait for something that takes forever to materialize.

Government doesn't have to give you a refund, your payroll department is not withholding the correct amount of Paye from your gross earnings unless employees are not declaring all their allowable deductions as I indicated earlier.

My two annuity providers always late with their statements for td1s. By the time it comes I don't bother to do a TD1 again.

And I claim for traveling expenses which can only be done after.

Travelling expenses I understand. With respect to the annuity statement, once received you can always file the td1 then to have taxes adjusted from then on. You can file td1 as required not necessarily one per year.

Idk... its not my area so idk why i am always being overtaxed... nothing i can do about it... but file back for it at the end of the year... accounts has all my info... also in the employee code of conduct u cant work anywhere else... subject to termination if found out... so that is my only source of income... idk who causing the problem... my accounting department or BIR... i leaning on it being BIR as government offices well known to have slack employees... my income doesnt change every month so idk what the problem is

Bir doesn't calculate tax before the fact, your payroll/HR department does. Bir only advises what you are allowed based on what they get from the individual via a td1.
Your HR/payroll dept is at fault for calculating wrong withholding Paye tax.

My situation is compounded by the fact neither HR nor Accounting does payroll. We have an outsourced payroll provider to whom all the paperwork goes. So a TD1 has to get to them via HR by the 10th of a particular month but HR may sit on it for whatever reason (usually laziness and carelessness).

That's even worse yet. You paying for bad service. Many ppl when processing lots of payroll they use packages and very few packages can actually calculate takes accurately.

that is outside of my control though... also... i stated earlier... i get refunds... i have so far never owed the government in taxes... it is the other way around... so... so far... with regards to my payment of taxes... i overpay the government and wait on their good graces (as stated in my 2017 tax return which i recently got the refund for)... in short tnt doesnt suffer i suffer

Trust me the government knows who owe them via approved annuities and td4, etc. so they know who to go and audit. You are safe.
It's your taxes, it can be controlled.

^ that was the point of moving BIR et al into one building... and i would like to think the tax amnesty and demonitization process was used to file info on tax avoiders... all now... the grants require real detailed info... some of which could put tax avoiders in a hole when the government looks to restore revenues after this crisis... that said... if government loses this elections... all the plans for the tax authority may go up in smoke

I did my 2019 Income Tax Return today having received all the necessary documents. Let's see how quick I get my refund issued and received via post.

Update 17.04.20 - ETax site shows that the refund has been issued.

Update 20.04.20 - Cheque received in the mail.

Quick question, for first time home owners, the claim allows for 25k and will be granted 5 yes from the date of acquisition. Is this 25k overall or 25k per annum?
