I feel vindicated.
The game was epic... Chelsea defended like generals. One of the best defensive displays I've ever seen...shut down who they had to shut down, and forced Bayern to shoot when not neccesary. EXCELLENT game.

Bayern edge out Dutch
Gomez scores late winner in Allianz Arena friendly
Last Updated: May 22, 2012 10:32pm

Mario Gomez scored a late winner as Bayern Munich beat the Netherlands 3-2 at the Allianz Arena just days after their UEFA Champions League heartbreak.

Fresh from losing on penalties to Chelsea in the Champions League final on Saturday, Bayern were back in action to face a Euro 2012-bound Dutch side.

The game had been arranged by means of compensation to Bayern for an injury picked up by Arjen Robben while on international duty and the winger made a late outing in an Oranje shirt.

Toni Kroos gave Bayern the lead in the 17th minute with a fine 25-yard effort which struck the underside of the bar on its way in but their lead lasted less than a minute, though, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar replying.

Boos

The Schalke striker and Bundesliga top goalscorer this season was put through by Dirk Kuyt and threaded the ball inside Hans-Jorg Butt's near post.

The Dutch took the lead two minutes later when Holger Badstuber pushed up and got the offside trap all wrong, allowing Luciano Narsingh a free run on goal, and he chipped the ball over Butt.

Bayern levelled in the 28th minute with Nils Petersen heading in a cross from Ivica Olic from six yards out.

Robben came on for Holland in the 75th minute, receiving boos from parts of the 33,000 fans whenever he touched the ball.

Franck Ribery also came on for Bayern and he set up Gomez to tap in the winner in the 87th minute to give the Bavarians something to smile about at the end of a disappointing few days and an equally disappointing season.

BAYERN MUNICH PLAYERS RUN THINGS AT EURO 2012!!!!!!

http://www.skysports.com/football/match ... 57,00.html

Super Mario adds to Dutch despair
Familiar story of Oranje self-destruction at Euro 2012

Last updated: 13th June 2012

Mario Gomez: Germany's primary striker has now scored three goals in two games at Euro 2012

Mario Gomez: Fired Germany into two-goal lead in the first half

Robin van Persie: The Arsenal captain gave Holland something to cheer in the second half

Referee: Jonas Eriksson was very impressive. He did not have to dish out a card until late on in the game when some desperate challenges went in. He always preferred to communicate and explain his decisions to players. There were a couple of penalty shouts and he rightly dismissed each claim.

Man of the match: There were several Germany players to choose from but Mario Gomez was the best, netting two brilliant goals. He may not always be involved but his sharpness to effect the game so quickly is very impressive. His timing of the run and quality of finishing for both goals was excellent.

Holland are clinging to the hope of qualifying for the knockout stages of Euro 2012 after suffering a 2-1 defeat by Germany in Kharkiv on Wednesday night.

Two first-half Mario Gomez goals did the damage to Bert van Marwijk's side, who must now defeat Portugal in their final Group B game to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Having lost to Denmark in their opening game, Holland, 2010 World Cup finalists and pre-tournament contenders to win Euro 2012, must also hope Germany can do them a favour against the Danes.

Robin van Persie gave the Oranje contingent something to cheer with a long-range effort in the second half but there is a familiar sense of typical self-destruction from the unravelling Dutch.

With Rafael van der Vaart earlier in the week having questioned Van Marwijk's decision to only use him as a substitute, Holland saw Arjen Robben strop off of the pitch when being replaced by in the second half against Germany.

Joachim Low's defeated finalists from Euro 2008 now only need a point against Portugal to reach the knockout stages, while Holland need an incredible turnaround.

Van Marwijk's men had shaded the opening exchanges, with Van Persie shooting straight at Manuel Neuer as he sought to atone for a series of missed chances in the Dutch defeat by Denmark.

No killer instinct

Mesut Ozil responded for Germany with a ninth minute volley which struck the base of Maarten Stekelenburg's left-hand post before the ball was gathered by the grateful Dutch goalkeeper.

Arsenal captain Van Persie was looking lively but still lacking killer instinct, and another opportunity went begging when Ibrahim Afellay's cross towards the striker was crucially intercepted by Mats Hummels.

Gomez, who scored the winner against Portugal, put Germany ahead in the 24th minute with an excellent finish after Bastian Schweinsteiger's through-ball cut the Dutch defence in two. Gomez turned and fired the opener low to Stekelenburg's right.

Arjen Robben slammed a long-range effort straight at Neuer as Dutch frustration began to tell, although they were secure in the knowledge they could not face elimination due to Portugal's earlier win over Denmark.

It was just as well, as the Germans continued to exploit glaring weaknesses in the Dutch defence, particularly down the right flank, and Holger Badstuber should have made it 2-0 in the 37th minute when he headed straight at Stekelenburg from point-blank range.

But one minute later, Germany did have their second from another move originating on the right, Schweinsteiger playing in Gomez who looked up and slammed an unstoppable shot across the shot-stopper from a tight angle.

Germany almost made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time when Schweinsteiger's free-kick struck Robben and looked set to loop into the top corner only to be brilliantly tipped over by Stekelenburg.

Flash
Van Marwijk introduced both Klaus-Jan Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart at the break but the Germans continued to press, with Hummels denied by Stekelenburg twice in a matter of seconds seven minutes after the re-start.

With the Dutch forced to push forward, they also had chances, with Robben seeing his drive deflected over by Philipp Lahm, then Robben crossing from the left to Van Persie whose powerful low drive was well saved by Neuer.

Holland came even closer to reducing the deficit in the 62nd minute when Wesley Sneijder left fly from outside the box and saw his drive flash inches wide of Neuer's left-hand post with the goalkeeper beaten.

Another Schneijder effort was blocked in the box by Jerome Boateng with a suspicion of handball, before the Dutch pressure paid off with Van Persie finally breaking his Euro 2012 deadlock in style.

The striker turned and drifted across from the left flank before drilling a brilliant finish past Neuer from the edge of the box with his weaker right foot to give his side hope with 17 minutes of the match still to play.

The Dutch were suddenly dominant, with Van Persie having a penalty appeal waved away before Robben expressed his frustration at being substituted by exiting the pitch on the far side of the field in front of the Dutch fans.

But their push for an equaliser was almost undone in the 89th minute when Stekelenburg made a mighty hash of a back-pass and almost presented German substitute Miroslav Klose with the simplest of chances to wrap things up.

2-0 bayern 75' 8-)

FC Bayern München: A Look Ahead to the Bundesliga Opener Against Fürth
The first two matches have gone according to plan—Borussia Dortmund was put away for a trophy while Jahn Regensburg was put away 0-4. The focus now shifts to the Bundesliga opener against Greuther Fürth.

Bayern has started off slowly in each season since 2007-08. Last season, after the first two matches, they managed to overturn recent history and motor their way to the top. They did, however, lose their opener to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

First of all, let’s go back to the win over Regensburg. The tactics Regensburg used involved clogging the midfield and hitting Bayern on the counter. For 32 minutes, Bayern couldn’t find their way, as loads of passes went astray. Finally, a slightly ill Franck Ribery found Mario Mandzukic in the box. The Croat simply tapped the ball into the net.

Xherdan Shaqiri came on in the second half and changed the dynamics of the match. He scored from a free-kick on an Andrea Pirlo-like goal. He set up Mandzukic for a second score, and Claudio Pizarro for Bayern’s fourth of the night.

For the second year in a row, Bayern will kick-off on a Saturday rather than a Friday. This is because the champions traditionally open the season on a Friday. On Saturday, rather than the usual six games, seven games will take place. The DFB has surprisingly accepted Stuttgart’s request to move their match—originally scheduled for Sunday—in order to allow them to prepare better for their Europa League qualifier.

Bayern and Greuther Fürth have obviously not met in the Bundesliga in past years because this is Fürth’s first promotion to the top-tier in Germany. They did, however, meet recently in the DFB Pokal in 2010 at the quarter-final stage.

Fürth was never going to upset the biggest of big boys in German football. However, the half-time score in that game was 1-2 in favour of Fürth! Sami Allagui, who you might know from his time at Mainz, scored his side’s second and gave them a rather surprising lead. Nonetheless, Bayern began to open up and have fun in the second half and ran out as 6-2 winners—one of which was an own goal.

Fürth plays in a 4-4-2 formation. They are coached by former Schalke coach Mike Büskens, who has promised attractive football to the fans. It is doubtful whether they will risk playing with two forwards up-front against Bayern. In terms of transfer dealings, the Bavarian side sold Olivier Occean to Frankfurt. Occean was an important part of the side.

Fürth upset Hoffenheim in last season’s DFB Pokal to reach the semi-finals. They were undone by a last second goal in extra time from Ilkay Guendogan when up against Dortmund. This season, unfortunately for their fans, there will be no more cup football owing to their defeat against Kickers Offenbach.

As far as the injury news is concerned, Bastian Schweinsteiger is seemingly set to start from the bench. Definite absentees include Mario Gomez, David Alaba, Rafinha, Diego Contento and third choice keeper Lukas Raeder. Raeder unfortunately has an ACL injury and will be out for six months. He was purchased from Schalke in the preseason.

Daniel Van Buyten and Franck Ribery have both been ruled out. The Frenchman was ill, of course, in Regensburg. Emre Can is suffering from a dead leg. That usually results in a one-match absence but Can will seemingly be ready for this one.

This is my best guess at a probable lineup for the first of six Bavarian derbies this season:

Manuel Neuer

Philipp Lahm; Holger Badstuber; Dante; Jerome Boateng

Toni Kroos; Luiz Gustavo

Arjen Robben; Xherdan Shaqiri; Thomas Müller

Mario Mandzukic

Unlike last season, Bayern is spoilt for choice. Claudio Pizarro will be available if a late goal is required.
