Local Chaguanas Borough

Caiman and Zika Mosquito Infestation - Need Immediate Attention

The wall need to be broken down ground level about 5 feet down below to get natural water flowing out freely

Today we had visitors from CBC Disaster Management Unit related to solving the block drainage issue.

Complain was send to the CEO /The Mayor of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation since 2011.

This is the state of our yard and other citizen Property may have the same problem land slipping and washing out, foundation of home cracking

We need 40- 50 loads of back fill material and an estimate to get some re-construction done to our home by the Chaguanas Borough Corporation

Since 2011 the mayor and Ceo was contacted related to the Natural Water Course was block with an illegal 4ft wall by Raffie Mohammed who do not reisde in the Area,

He lives at Couva, and Camiel Mohammed who reside in Longdenville and know about the damages, we have water works laws which was supposing to be working

Our yard is the caiman play ground, we got coral snakes, our house wall has new cracks on the wall since 2011

We did since in letters to the mayor and the Ceo of Chaguanas Borough Corporation, nothing have been done to break the 4ft illegal wall in the middle of the Natural water course, we have stagnant water backing into our property with the infestation of the mosquitoes which can be the zika mosquitoes harvesting in our yard

Due to the neglect by the Mayor and the CEO of the CBC, both men are fighting us down since 2011 up to this day no satisfaction, getting that wall break and we have law in The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago related to altering of Natural Water Course

Local History ~ 1940's

The vicinity of Prince and Frederick Streets, here's a flashback to the corner of Queen and Frederick Streets circa 1940s based on the models of the cars.

It looks like this would have been captured from upstairs Glendinnings.

In this turn of the century photograph of Frederick Street on what I imagine must have been a Sunday morning.

So often the old photographs we see of Frederick Street are down at the junction with Marine Square, but here we see the ornate cast iron work at the northern corner of Prince Street

The curtains blowing in the breeze of the building in the foreground, the railings of Woodford Square, the tram lines, the rather spectacular electric power lines, the ladies in their white dresses and hats, the men in jacket and tie looking on at the photographer who would have been standing in the middle of the road amidst the tram lines, and of course, the corbeau just really rounds off this wonderful glimpse back in time

Local History ~ Auntie Kay

These two entities truly defined an era and should not be forgotten.

Today we look at Kathleen Warner fondly known as "Auntie Kay."

She was born in 1903 in San Fernando and later went to London to study medicine but ended up studying music instead.

In 1940 she returned home and taught singing and elocution.

Warner joined Radio Trinidad in 1941 and retired in 1985 after establishing herself as the most popular talent show hostess of the century, discovering some of Trinidad and Tobago's top performers.

Auntie Kay died in December 1996 at the age of 93

Local Chaguanas

Immortalized in VS Naipaul's "A House for Mr. Biswas", Lion House in Chaguanas is the ancestral home of the Capildeo Family.

The house was built between 1924 to 1926 by Pundit Capildeo who arrived in Trinidad as an indentured worker in 1894.

It was styled after a city dwelling in Gorakphur in India and was named Anand Bhavan or Mansion of Bliss, though it is commonly referred to as Lion House because of the lions which adorn the front of the house at either end.

Local Zangee

Ask any Trinidadian what a zangee is and you are likely to get a range of responses. Some will tell you it is a “swamp eel,” others insist on calling it a “water snake.” More still will reveal that they are not sure what a zangee is exactly, but they are terrified of them nonetheless; perhaps they have heard the rumours about this mysterious creature, which is said to suck on your toes should you happen to tread barefooted into the water.

The truth is that the zangee, more formally known as Synbranchus marmoratus, is actually a type of fish. With their slippery, elongated body (up to 1.5 metres long), the confusion is entirely understandable. Adding to the confusion is the fact that they lack well developed fins and their bodies are essentially scaleless. Indeed, it is surprising to discover that they are not closely related to the true eels at all (which may also be found occasionally in Trinidadian waters), and their resemblance to a snake is entirely superficial.

Sometimes spelt janjii or zangie, the origin of the name is actually “les anguilles” which is French for eel. Like many local French-derived names that begin with the letter “a,” Trinidadians added a “z” and, over time, the word morphed into the zangee that we know today.

Outside of Trinidad, the zangee is found throughout Mexico, Central and South America and on a few islands of the Caribbean. Within TT, it is one of the most widespread fish in the islands’ waterways, inhabiting a wide range of habitats from muddy swamps and drainage ditches to clear, pristine mountain streams. It is primarily found on the southern slopes of the Northern Range, but has on occasion been found along the north coast at Sans Souci and Yarra.

Like all fish, the zangee absorbs oxygen while underwater via its gills. However, amazingly it is also capable of absorbing atmospheric oxygen via the surfaces of its mouth and throat. This is advantageous in several ways.

Firstly, it grants it the unusual ability to travel overland, between ponds and streams for example, which it takes advantage of mostly after dark when there is less risk of drying out. Indeed, the zangee is primarily nocturnal, emerging from the edges of the stream at night to feed on small aquatic animals including fish, tadpoles and aquatic insects.

It is also regarded as a scavenger and, in the presence of carrion, zangee have even been spotted on open grass areas in daylight.

Secondly, the ability to breathe atmospheric air also allows it to better survive the dry season should it find itself in a waterway which has dried up.

In such a case the zangee might excavate a small burrow in which it can wait in a semi-dormant state until the rains return. Studies have indicated that these fish can survive out of water like this for as long as nine months.

Finally, because it does not have to rely on oxygenated water, the zangee can survive in stagnant waterways in which other fish may not be able to.

However, this doesn’t seem to prevent them from also making their home in the clear, well oxygenated streams of the lower parts of the Northern Range and elsewhere.

The air breathing ability of the zangee is not its only bizarre trait. They are also hermaphroditic, so that while most individuals are born female, some can and will change into functional males as they mature. Eggs are buried in the river bank and tended to by the male before hatching into larvae. These newly-hatched larvae look quite different to their parents, with greatly exaggerated pectoral fins for gas exchange, which are shed after their first couple of weeks.

Both young and adult zangee face predators such as caiman, waterbirds and large fish, and they use their cryptic marbled reddish-brown colouration to help conceal themselves in muddy environments. While they are also eaten by humans, they are not usually intentionally hunted for food in Trinidad. Rather, specimens may occasionally get caught on the hooks and in the nets of fisherman and are then eaten. Outside of our region however, members of the Synbranchidae are widely consumed, especially in China where stir-fried swamp eel is considered a delicacy.

As with much of our flora and fauna, there is much to learn about our zangee.

For a start, it is clear that any fear we have for this fish is entirely unfounded –— it is completely harmless to humans and an important member of our freshwater ecosystem. We hope that readers will now have a greater appreciation for this odd yet fascinating fish

Local Labor Day ~ Tubal Uriah 'Buzz' Butler

"Yes, I can die. I can suffer pain. I can suffer anything in this fight for justice for the oppressed people of beautiful Trinidad. Make no mistake about it. This is a cause that demands real men as leaders. Yes, a time like this demands real men as followers. A time like this demands men, real men, men of opinion, men of will, men whom the lust of office cannot kill. Yes. Men with the soul of the Master, the mind of the Master to make sacrifices that others might enjoy a better an brighter day."

Tubal Uriah 'Buzz' Butler.

Tubal Uriah "Buzz" Butler (21 January 1895 – 20 February 1977), was a Grenadian-born Spiritual Baptist preacher and labor leader in Trinidad and Tobago. He is best known for leading a series of labor riots between 19 June and 6 July 1937 and for forming a series of personalist political parties (the British Empire Citizens' and Workers' Home Rule Party, the Butler Home Rule Party and finally the Butler Party) that focused its platform on the improvement of the working class.

Butler first came to prominence in 1935 when he led a "hunger march" from the oilfields to Port of Spain. In 1936 he was expelled from the Trinidad Labour Party for his "extremist tendencies". He then formed the British Empire Citizens' and Workers' Home Rule Party. On 19 June 1937 a strike in protest of working conditions, wages, racism and exploitation began in the oilfields in the southern Trinidad. Police attempted to arrest Butler as he addressed a meeting in Fyzabad. His supporters prevented the police from doing so and Charlie King, a police officer was killed.

The Labour riots of 1937 resulted in turmoil throughout the oilfields. When strikes spread to the sugar factories, the Colonial government responded by issuing an arrest warrant for Butler. Butler went into hiding and the colonial authorities were unble to locate him. He stayed in contact with the authorities through Adrian Cola Rienzi and although he was promised safe passage by the colonial authorities to testify at a commission of enquiry into the events of June 1937, he was arrested by the colonial government when he emerged to do so.

Butler was imprisoned from 9 September 1937 to May 1939. With the outbreak of World War II in September, 1939, Butler was re-arrested and detained for the duration of the war. After release from prison Butler formed the Butler Home Rule Party, which later became the Butler Party. The Butler Party which captured the largest block of seats in the Legislative Council, but the Governor chose to exclude Butler and instead Albert Gomes became the first Chief Minister.

In the 1956 General Elections the Butler Party only won two seats. Butler, the fiery radical, was deemed too unstable and threatening to the nation's economic well-being by Eric Williams and the People's National Movement.

Butler is looked upon as the founding father of the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) and the labour movement and is honoured with a statue in Fyzabad. He was awarded the Trinity Cross, the nation's highest honour, in 1970

Local Cocoa Fermentation

Fermentation of cocoa beans in Fermentation (Sweat) Box, this process is critical for flavor development in beans.

Cocoa is fermented for 6-8 days. This box can hold 1000 Kgs of wet cocoa

Beans are covered with Banana leaves to conserve heat.

Beans will be turned to facilitate uniformity of heat on beans in box.

Had to encourage fruit flies by hanging a bunch of bananas close to box.

Cocoa beans being dried in an artificial dryer after being washed, beans are dried to a moisture content of 6% to 7% for export. External mould develops in cocoa where moisture content exceeds 8%.

This mould can penetrate through cracks, slits, breaks in testa and penetrate to cotyledon.

This favors internal mould buildup which can taint flavor and is a commercial defect.

Cocoa beans on heap to be passed through Grader.

The grader sorts beans by size, any flat beans, double beans, broken beans, dust are collected via separate shutes and bagged.

Only Grade 1 beans that fall under criteria requirements are exported.

Cut test analysis of Grade 1 cocoa beans for export.

The International criteria states that Grade 1 cocoa is well fermented, thoroughly dry, clean, free from adulteration and commercial defects and having a bean count of up to 95 beans in 100 grams of beans.

Commercial defects include, mouldy beans, insect infested, over and under fermented beans, beans with any foreign or abnormal scents which could taint taste

A successful end to the fermentation process of our cocoa beans .

Beans were placed in clean bags, weighed and transported to Tabaquite Cocoa Fermenter & Exporter to be artificially dried in an LPG DRYER.

We have successfully implemented our Harvesting and Fermentation at Station with training in each field.

The importance of quality standards which affects the overall flavor potential of the Trinitario variety was stressed

Local Official Trinidad Olympic Music Video 2016

Work hard to achieve one's dream is the basic concept in which athletes base their lives upon.

Thinking about it, we all base our day to day activities on this concept.

For us, this music video celebrates this.

My objective was the portrayal of different sectors of society working hard, training in their own ways and going for gold.

The classy, clean production style of Mega Mick laid the foundation for the trained vocals of Sekon Sta, Nesta Boxill to melodically compose a ballad that will resonate through the speakers of every tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.

This is our world and it is up to us to work hard and achieve our dreams.

Together we can do this. Together we aspire, Together we achieve.
