I have a daiwa reel and noticed that it got a little stiff recently. Usually i would rinse it out with fresh water after each use so I dont know what caused this. Is it safe to open it up and spray it with WD40?

i would recommend getting a one piece rod such as a shimano....look for a more flexible rod if u are fishing from shore, u would get the extra distance when casting...u shud lookin into the new line of reels from penn (battle is really great), they come water tight sealed so they are more hardy but u still need to do your maintenance on them...

on another note, did some shore fishing on tuesday...didnt do bad...caught about 14 tarpon but released all except one which was caught bad, a cavalli about 20+lbs, a snook about 15lbs and some guabeen...here are the pics since i already on tuner...

^ yeah it's safe to spray with teh wd40, heck it's even recommended.

Wd40 is fish oil based so no problems, could even spray a little on your bait.

Sometimes you need to open the reels and clean them out, sometimes a lot of gunk and if ur reel gets dunked a lot, there will be corrosion because of salt inside the reel. Sometimes gears and shafts need some grease or oil, that could explain the stiffness sometimes.

You have to open ur reels because sometimes the teeth on the main gear and or oscillating gear has worn down and would need to change......

i tried the exact theory banking already and didn't get any more or less bites than without WD, if anything it doesn't scare the fish as i thought it would.

WD40 is NOT recommended on reels. You need to grease a reel with the proper stuff.

Maybe i should have been clearer, after use wash the reel with fresh water, the wd40 id sprayed after to get rid of any latent moisture and then regrease bearings/gears if necessary.

Been doing this years and all my reels have remained virtually new with no rust or need to do any repairs.

the wd40 doesnt allow for the grease to hold properly, u shud try using gas as it evaporates an then add grease...been doin this for a while now and seems to work alot better...

I find it works just perfect for me. See my bro uses carb spray.
I find that and the gas strips too much.

For properly clean and maintain your reel you can do alot of things
What i do is when i reach home from a trip i take out the reel of the rod and spray it off and then let it soak in a bucket of water over night, then take it of and spray it down with WD 40. PLEASE try and dont get WD40 on your lines. Then wipe dry.
Also from time to time scrap the reel and there is a special grease that is made for reels that you can buy, grease up the reels from time to time.
