Blueprint? (no official name as far as I know) Its available via the Retina HD wallpaper app, but it wouldn't show up properly for the iPhone 2G, 3G & 3GS. Its more made for the iPhone 4 with the higher resolution display. I tried it on my iPhone 2G before I got the 4 to verify that fact.

I shrunk this 1 from 960x640 to 320x480. Don't know if it'll work...

Apple didn’t list IPS (inter plane switching) as part of the iPod touch 4 specs for a reason — the iPod touch 4 screen, while LED and “Retina Display” 960×640 resolution lacks the IPS technology of the iPhone 4 display.
IPS, which Apple has rolled out for everything from iMac to iPad to iPhone 4 provides a much greater viewing range than a standard display.
So the still camera isn’t the only step down when you go from iPhone 4 to iPod touch, but does anyone out there care as much about IPS?

------

We iPhone 3G users know how to take a hint. First, it was the lack of wallpapers, but we could live with that; then it was the no multitasking, which stung, but some of us understood. When we heard we'd be plum left out of Game Center, well, that sucked pretty hard too. But, this, Cupertino? This is kicking us while we're down.

According to Engadget who got the goods from Apple, not only is the 3G iPhone getting left behind on almost all the new goodies in iOS 4, but our once-partner in home-aloneness, the iPod touch second-generation, isn't.

Image

Yeah, you read that right. Apparently, the second-generation iPod touch is a better device than our puny iPhones. We're not up to the task of gaming at Game Center levels. Heck, we can't even handle wallpaper, so who'd want us on their team. No, we're kicked to the curb with the first generation iPhones and iPod touches. Ouch.

If Steve & Co. are trying to sweet talk us into an upgrade with cruddy performance in iOS 4 and now the unkindest cut of all, they sure have a funny way of pitching woo.

Users are reporting that iOS 4.1 once again allows you to enter Field Test mode on your iPhone and get a numeric representation of signal strength.

To try this you must first update your iPhone to iOS 4.1 then dial *3001#12345#*.

You'll notice that your signal bars are replaced with numbers. The closer the number to 0 then higher your signal strength. For example -10 is much stronger then -100.

------

A new exploit credited to @pod2g could bring about a jailbreak for iOS 4.1, according to a series of tweets from MuscleNerd.

Earlier today @pod2g tweeted the following decryption keys:
iPhone 4G iBSS 4.0.1: iv=91f94e5d726a2d2f2c7ffad58d4f3b77 key=d05c3c40db40e738926f811b8b1314038d26096c4102461698a49098c47a3fe6

MuscleNerd then tweets:

congrats to @pod2g for the latest exploit and also @p0sixninja who have been trying for months.

Crazy timing that @pod2g got latest exploit just as 4.1 went public (lots of work left...keep away from 4.1 for now!)

Wow! You really can tell you’ve made it when the competition start to trash talk you, and now we’re seeing the biggest compliment ever shot across at Apple, with Acer founder Stan Shih calling Apple’s products a “mutant virus”.

Anyway, the upshot of these claims, made during a Digitimes interview yesterday: Shih says that Apple’s popularity is mainly due to the success of products such as the iPad and iPhone (I’d add iPod, but then I know what I’m talking about), and he calls these succesful products ‘mutant viruses’. And like viruses these are difficult to “cure” in the short term, but the Acer man thinks PC makers will eventually find a way to isolate Apple and become immune.

Quoted verbatim because I like it: “Shih pointed out that Apple deserves to be respected, since it has a completely different strategy than other PC brands. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has always been looking for revolution, while other PC brands evolved naturally and are developing products in a more solid way, Shih commented. But based on the historical experience, a market that evolves naturally will always turn out to be much stronger, according to Shih.”

Shih still praised Apple’s creativity and innovation, especially its highly integrated hardware and software and its completely established online application store and believes its strategy should be a good example for PC brands to learn from.

Shih also noted that all Apple’s products are built on a culture of innovation, and predicted US PC vendors will eventually quite the PC market as profits decline. (Or, as Steve Jobs says, PCs become like haulage trucks).

Hackerz, jailbreakerz and all the iBadBoys will be having a little party this morning on news that those iPhone hackers over at the iPhone and Chronic Dev Teams have succeeded in jailbreaking iOS 4.1.

This time around jailbreaker types can thank iPhone hacker pod2g of Chronic Dev Team who previously found the 24kpwn exploit. This time he’s found another bootrom based exploit which can jailbreak all iOS based devices on the latest iOS 4.1 firmware.

The impact of using a bootrom exploit is that users should be able to change boot and recovery mode logos among many other things.

Also, because this exploit targets such a low-level part of the operating system, it will be challenging for Apple to stop the jailbreak. Don’t get too excited thought – the exploit isn’t available yet, there’s still work to do.

A Twitter message reads
cpich3g: congrats to @pod2g for the latest exploit and also @p0sixninja who have been trying for months.

Meanwhile Dev-Team members advise jailbreakers not to upgrade to iOS 4.1, while more faint-hearted users may choose to skip this chapter if they can’t figure the technical complexity of jailbreaking, which Apple will cut warranties over if it susses you out.

Image

We’re not saying the iPhone 5 will be this startlingly amazing example of a location-sensing, near field communicating hyper-advanced device that might run at speeds as fast as 2.5GHz — but we are saying it’s possible.

That’s because ARM has announced its new Cortex A15 MPCore processor design that seems set for implementation across all kinds of devices, from smartphones to tablets, entertainment systems to netbooks.

Take a look at ARM’s claims for this new chip, which it says is up to five times better performing than existing smartphone processors. Not only that, but it sips power, so functions like 3D navigation and other forms of augmented reality solutions will have the juice to run pervasively. So we can become stupid and leave it to our phone, some say.

“The launch of the Cortex-A15 MPCore processor marks the beginning of an entirely new era for the ARM Partnership. It brings together more than 20 years of ARM expertise in low-power design with a host of new and very aggressive high-performance technologies,” said Mike Inglis, EVP and GM, Processor Division, ARM.

“The Cortex-A15 MPCore processor will become the next major step along the industry’s energy efficient computing roadmap and open up a wide range of new application possibilities for our Partners.”

Samsung, ST Ericsson and Texas Instruments all helped shaped the functionality of the processor as they look to deliver more powerful chips:

“The market’s demand for more functionality and connectivity with low power consumption requires ever more advanced processor, system and chip design,” said Yiwan Wong, VP of SoC marketing, system LSI Division, Samsung Electronics.

“We believe this new Cortex-A15 MPCore processor core from ARM, with its quantum leap in processing capabilities, will successfully enable many next-generation electronic products and redefine the level of experience consumers will demand from their smartphones and mobile computing devices.”

The Cortex-A15 MPCore processor will be supported by specifically optimized ARM Physical IP that was developed jointly with the processor. These optimizations enable rapid development of leadership physical implementations, initially targeting 32nm and 28nm technologies with a roadmap extending to 20nm.

You’ve seen the magnetic ones, but Apple might be looking into a clip-on zoom lens for its iOS devices according to patents revealed by Patently Apple today.

The implementation pictured above isn’t very ‘Apple-like’ at first glance, but might be a neat accessory if done right.

------

Apple today released the following statement on App Store Review Guidelines:

The App Store℠ has revolutionized the way mobile applications are developed and distributed. With over 250,000 apps and 6.5 billion downloads, the App Store has become the world’s largest mobile application platform and App Store developers have earned over one billion dollars from the sales of their apps. We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year. In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need. In addition, for the first time we are publishing the App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how we review submitted apps. We hope it will make us more transparent and help our developers create even more successful apps for the App Store. The App Store is perhaps the most important milestone in the history of mobile software. Working together with our developers, we will continue to surprise and delight our users with innovative mobile apps.

It would appear that Apple has reversed course and now is allowing third party application development environments to be used to submit apps. What happened to the Thoughts on Flash:

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers. This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor’s platforms. Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X. Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

Should we blame this on Android? Nah. More likely this is Apple not wanting to mess around with the Feds who are looking at Apple’s development guidelines courtesy of a formal request by Adobe.

Google has posted on its Mobile Ads blog applauding the changes Apple has made to its Terms of Service.

---
Today, Apple updated their iPhone Developer Program License Agreement. Unlike the previous version, these new terms ensure that Apple’s developers have the choice of a variety of advertising solutions (including Google’s and AdMob’s) to earn money and fund their apps. Apple’s new terms will keep in-app advertising on the iPhone open to many different mobile ad competitors and enable advertising solutions that operate across a wide range of platforms.

This is great news for everyone in the mobile community, as we believe that a competitive environment is the best way to drive innovation and growth in mobile advertising. Mobile advertising has already helped to fund tens of thousands of mobile apps across many different platforms and devices, and it will help do the same for many more in the years ahead.

The new terms provide immediate clarification about the status of mobile advertising on the iPhone and will benefit users, developers, and advertisers. Users will benefit from more free, or low cost, apps that can now more readily be supported by advertising. Developers will be able to choose from a variety of competitive advertising options and pick the solution that works best for them, to boost their revenues. Advertisers will have access to simple and effective advertising solutions that can reach users across a wide range of devices.

We’re very grateful for all the words of encouragement we’ve received on this issue from app developers in recent months. We’re pleased that Apple has clarified its terms and we’re 100% committed to developing the best possible advertising solutions and formats for the iPhone - as well as for Android devices, BlackBerry devices, Palm devices, Windows mobile devices and undoubtedly many more to come - in the years ahead.

Vice President of Product Management

Remember the first time you ran Photo Booth on an iSight-equipped Mac? Those endless hours of posing in front of your Mac while Photo Booth's real-time effects wreaked havoc on your face can now be relived with the iPhone 4’s front-facing camera and a nifty new app by Libero Spagnolini called FaceMan

Image

Though it will run on any iOS 4 device, FaceMan is specifically designed to make use of the iPhone 4’s front-facing camera. It provides 16 real-time effects that swirl, stretch, distort, and otherwise mangle your face beyond recognition.

Some effects, like Swirl, Stretch, and Bulge, will feel familiar to Photo Booth veterans, but FaceMan has its share of unique effects as well, like the super-pixelated Led, or the glitchy BrokenTV effect. It also features real-time sketch and emboss effects, which have traditionally been available only for still photos.

When you’ve struck a pose you're happy with, you can capture the image and keep it in FaceMan’s built-in album, from where you can transfer it to your iPhone's photo album, or share it via email.

FaceMan costs $2 and runs on iOS 4.

------

Mac4ever this morning posts that Facetime, Apple’s open source video chatting protocol, will be coming to iChat very soon, adding desktop Macs to the machines that are able to video chat with Apple’s camera-wielding iOS devices.

Even more interestingly, they say Apple is working on a Windows Facetime application as well. ORLY?

If that weren’t enough, they say that Apple iLife ’11 (sans iDVD) is coming very soon.

Mac4ever, you’ll recall, had a wide ranging report last year predicting, amongst other things, the Magic Mouse, new aluminum remote and iPad. At that point they said iApps would be 64-bit and for Snow Leopard only.

------

Yet more claims that Apple intends launching the iPhone on T-Mobile and Wind carriers in Canada comes from Canada mobile firm, Videotron, which claims it too will offer a version of the device, specially manufactured with support for the 1700MHz AWS band.

Videotron launched its service in Canada yesterday with an exec making these claims. He added that he expects the iPhone to reach Videotron in the next few months, as Apple execs widen North American distribution in response to the continued (if increasingly fragmented) Android threat.

These aren’t the first T-Mobile rumors to emanate out of the US/Canada networks, but that two seemingly complimentary rumors have emerged from two different continents is extremely likely to set some chatter and speculation going.

------

BusinessWeek this morning has an interesting read — a profile of the head of Apple’s main iPhone manufacturing partner, Foxconn’s Terry Gou. Gou notes on Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, “I forced him to give me his business card”.

Foxconn now produces 90 iPhone 4′s a minute, 137,000 per day at its Longhua plant. That extrapolates down to 1.5 per second or up to 50 million/year.

“Foxconn founder Terry Gou might be regarded as Henry Ford reincarnated if only a dozen of his workers hadn’t killed themselves this year,” the report observes, before launching into a full-scale exploration of the man whose factories produce more than their fair share of techno-heaven.

The report begins during a celebration (of sorts), where employees and management got together to put on a show to lift damaged morale at the factory, following those suicides which marred the year.

Read it and you’ll find a thorough deconstruction of how Gou built his empire from scratch using cash borrowed from his mother, how Apple and the firm almost parted company over employee conditions in the past, and how Dell cut the cruelest low to no profit manufacturing deals.

On the iPhone 4: “When Apple’s iPhone4 was nearing production, Foxconn and Apple discovered that the metal frame was so specialized that it could be made only by an expensive, low-volume machine usually reserved for prototypes. Apple’s designers wouldn’t budge on their specs, so Gou ordered more than 1,000 of the $20,000 machines from Tokyo-based Fanuc. Most companies have just one.

“Terry is a strong leader with a passion for excellence,” says Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer. “He’s a trusted partner and we are fortunate to work with him.”

------

Apple may abandon use of Infineon baseband solutions in its future iPhone 5 following the latter firm’s acquisition by processor giant, Intel.

The China Times tells us Apple may instead choose to use baseband solutoins from Qualcomm in the next-gen iPhone. That report adds that such a switch might already have taken place in other Apple products, naming the iPad as one such.

The news has also sparked fresh chatter speculating Apple plans to launch a CDMA iPhone next year, enabling the firm to offer the device via networks other than AT&T in the US.

A recent report claims Intel CEO Paul otellini contacted Apple’s Steve Jobs to discuss the Infineon purchase and that Jobs seemed happy for that deal to go ahead at that time.

Perhaps because Jobs knew Apple was already migrating to a different manufacturer?

apple has issued new developers rules and tools to this point

Adobe resurrects Flash-to-iPhone app tool

In the wake of loosened Apple restrictions, Adobe Systems has restarted work on a tool called Packager for iPhone that lets developers make native iOS apps out of Flash programs.
Apple relaxed its iOS developer rules on Thursday, removing the restriction that had blocked Packager for iPhone applications and permitting advertisements supplied by Google's AdMob once again. It also detailed the full set of App Store admission rules for the first time.

It looks like AT&T is ready to sell some refurbished iPhone 4′s at 150 bucks a pop. That’s for the 16 gigger while the 32 GB refurbished version sells at a penny under $250. If you haven’t realized, that’s a 50 dollar savings for both models.

Refurbished Apple products supposedly get new casings, screens, and batteries. So unless the previous user destroyed the A4 and the RAM, you’re all good.

------

Customers who buy an iPhone 4 after Sept. 30 will not be able to request a free case through Apple's "Case Program," but they will be able to contact AppleCare to request a free Bumper.

While the Sept. 30 date had already been revealed when the program was announced, Apple said at the time it would take the opportunity to reevaluate the situation. But on the official iPhone 4 Case Program site on Friday, Apple announced that it will not extend the program in its current incarnation.

In addition, it will no longer offer the 30-day return with no restocking fee for unsatisfied customers.

"We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought," the site reads. "A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free."

"For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

In July, after reception with the iPhone 4 had garnered a great deal of publicity, Apple held an event at which it announced it would give free cases to iPhone 4 buyers through Sept. 30. Eventually, the company released a free application on the App Store that allowed customers to choose a case, including an Apple-branded Bumper, or a number of third-party options.

Last month, an executive with a Mexican wireless carrier claimed that Apple would release a new iPhone 4 with revised hardware to address the antenna issue at the end of September. However, the company has made no indication that it has a hardware fix for the issue in the works.

When the iPhone 4 launched, users discovered that they could reduce the reception of the device and, in areas of weak reception, cause dropped calls by covering the bottom left of the handset. In addition to announcing the case program, Apple, at its press conference in July, stated that all phones experience reception issues when held incorrectly.

The iPhone's dead, long live the Windows Phone. That must be the genius proclamation that incited Microsoft to celebrate Windows Phone 7 reaching RTM status with the incomprehensible procession you see above. An elaborate parade, replete with hearses and black capes, was organized last week to denote the passing of the BlackBerry and iPhone into the land of unwanted gadgets. We'd say this is done in poor taste, but we don't enjoy stating the obvious. We will, however, enjoy the fallout from this poorly judged stunt. See our favorite image after the break and lots more at the source.

Apple is in the process of manufacturing an AWS-compliant iPhone, according to the executive Vice-President of Vidéotron.

Canada's Quebecor launched the new mobile service today. Similar to T-Mobile it uses AWS spectrum to offer 3G service.

Engadget reports that during the launch Q&A, Vidéotron's VP noted that Apple was building an AWS-compliant iPhone and that we should "expect an announcement in the coming months" regarding Vidéotron's launch of the device.

This corroborates an earlier report which said that talks between Apple and T-Mobile are at an advanced stage with an 80 percent likelihood that the T-Mobile will get the device.

Rock Your Phone has been acquired by Cydia, creating a unified place to download and buy Jailbreak apps for iOS devices like iPhone, iPod touch, and ipad.
After 18 months in the iOS Jailbreak scene Rock has been acquired by SaurikIT (makers of Cydia) and over the next few days we will be moving all products/users/licenses over to Cydia Store.
Licenses are being transferred to Cydia so you should still be able to re-install all your already purchased apps at will.
If you already have a Cydia Store login, your licenses have already transferred. Those who do not have a Cydia Store login, simply use (or create) your Google Account/Facebook account to login to Cydia Store, and your licenses will transfer automatically. If you’ve changed devices in the last day or two, don’t worry. You can simply type in your RockID and your licenses will transfer over.
Congratulations to the folks at Rock and Cydia both.

For those curious (like myself) about the pictures the 0.7MP 4th generation iPod touch is capable of producing:

Just to expand on what M_2NR meant in terms of Canada, there, along with the UK & France (& maybe by now Mexico), sell the iPhone 4 factory unlocked, guaranteeing its use in Trinidad.

In the States, they don't do this. There its either
-buy it from AT&T for $199, $299 (on a contract) or $599, $699 (without a contract) or as noted in a post above refurbished for $149, $249.
All would be locked to AT&T, so you would have to wait for an unlock, since more than likely they would come with iOS 4.1 or 4.0.2 both of which have no jailbreak at this time.
Also, iPhone 4 demand is very high so it may take several attempts to get one if going this route, which I personally wouldn't recommend.

or

-buy it from a seller on eBay, but expect to pay a good bit more for these & to be careful since iPhone 4 clones already exist. I don't like this option either, but it'll probably be your best bet from the US.

It looks like iOS 4.0 has successfully been ported/cloned to another device, an HTC one in this case, and everything from iOS seems to be there. As iSpazio points out, the porting of iOS to another company’s device seems like a long-shot, so this is most likely the best, most realistic iOS clone ever. As you’ll see in the video below, everything works including folders, quick-app switching, spotlight, and all the keyboards.

You will also notice that the device’s performance is just like an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0; complete junk. Anyways, this video is still pretty cool as it gives an idea of what iOS would look like another piece of hardware.

^^what he said

Best bet is sim free. You dont have to wait on an jailbreak/unlock anytime and worry about saving SHSH's etc.

eBay is a hit and miss. I'm seeing them go for 900usd upward.

It was reported that iPhone hacker pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team had discovered a bootrom exploit that could help in jailbreaking iOS 4.1. We have more details about the exploit.

The exploit that pod2g has discovered is the first exploit of the S5L8930 chip, Apple’s A4 chip, which is used in iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 4G.

The bootrom exploit allows the use of unsigned code execution, which could help in creating a tethered jailbreak called SHAtter, a jailbreak for life.

It looks like the same exploit was discovered by Geohot who had abandoned the iPhone hacking community couple of months back.

Since the exploit was discovered on Apple’s A4 chip running iOS 4.1, the tethered jailbreak should work with the current and older iOS devices. Tethered means that the jailbreak needs to be reapplied every time you power down your iOS device. If you let the battery run out or restart your iPod touch then you will need to reapply the jailbreak by connecting to your computer (tethering).

As we’ve explained in our earlier post, a bootrom exploit is a low level exploit that can’t be fixed by Apple with a software update like it did with iOS 4.0.2 to patch the security hole used by JailbreakMe.

Apple can prevent jailbreaking by releasing devices with a new bootrom that patches the exploit, but Apple won’t be able to stop users from jailbreaking devices with the older bootrom.

The iPhone Dev team and Chronic Dev team are currently working hard to bring the jailbreaking tools to users but it is expected to take sometime.

Boy, im glad it worked for you too.

Since then I tossed the non oem in a corner and never used again.
Unfortunately though, I have to use the busted OEM.
The ends are bruised badly, even the strands for the ground are busted up.
Most I could do is wrap them in electrical tape and avoid movement.

Where you got an oem to buy?
