Nursing Assistant Cured of Ebola Virus: Spanish Authorities

MADRID: An initial test shows that a nursing assistant who became infected with Ebola in Spain is now clear of all traces of the virus nearly two weeks after she was hospitalised, authorities said on Sunday.

Teresa Romero, 44, is the first person known to have contracted the disease outside West Africa in the current outbreak when she tested positive for the virus Oct. 6. She has been in quarantine at Carlos III hospital in Madrid since then.

A statement on Sunday said a blood test revealed that Romero's immune system had eliminated the virus from her body. The statement came from the Spanish government committee in charge of the nation's Ebola crisis. A second test in the coming hours is needed to absolutely confirm Romero's recovery, said Manuel Cuenca, microbiology director at Madrid's Carlos III health care complex.

Romero had treated two patients who died of Ebola at Carlos III hospital. The first, Miguel Pajares, contracted the disease in Liberia and died on Aug. 12 despite having been treated with the experimental drug ZMapp. The second was Manuel Garcia Viejo who died, aged 69, on Sept. 25.

Health authorities quarantined Romero's husband and euthanised Romero's pet dog named Excalibur on Oct. 8 instead of placing it in quarantine, creating outrage among animal rights activists.

Spain, meanwhile, has agreed to allow the US to use two military bases in the southwest of the country to support its efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

A Defense Ministry statement said the deal permits US armed forces to use the air base at Moron de la Frontera near Seville and the naval station at Rota on Spain's Atlantic coast to transport personnel and materials to and from Africa. Defense Minister Pedro Morenes sealed the deal with US counterpart Chuck Hagel in Washington.

The ministry statement, released late Saturday, said the agreement will be reviewed and updated on a case-by-case basis and would also permit US forces to use the bases against IS militants. The US has made use of the bases since the 1950s.

Why people beatin up over the non-banning of carnival?

It that hard to stay home and not exchange bodily fluids with other humans?

CDC may have to declare Carnivalitis in Trinidad, virus which makes people randomly go to fete and spit in each other mouth.

Pt lisas has no protocol in place for incoming vessels. Some ships come from Texas and Spain. Odd vessels my come from Africa.

I say a quarantine time of 22 days which starts from the time the vessel leaves its last berth. Then thermal screening for all persons on board.
When this is done then can it be allowed to dock and proceed with its activities.
But when the thermal screening are being conducted, swab samples for analysis would be collected.

Now seeing there's another doctor that tested positive after returning to the US from treating patients in West Africa.

Think it's time they have a mandatory quarantine for ALL healthcare people returning from hot-zones yes.

Doctor in New York City Is Sick With Ebola

A doctor in New York City who recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea became the first person in the city to test positive for the virus Thursday, setting off a search for anyone who might have come into contact with the man while he was sick.

The doctor, Craig Spencer, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center and placed in isolation at the same time as investigators sought to retrace every step he took for the past several days.

At least three people he had contact with in recent days have been placed in isolation. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which dispatched a team to New York, is conducting its own test to confirm the positive test on Thursday, which was performed by a city lab.

While officials have said they expected isolated cases of the disease to arrive in New York eventually, and had been preparing for this moment for months, the first case highlighted the challenges surrounding containment of the virus, especially in a crowded metropolis. Dr. Spencer had traveled on the A and L subway lines Wednesday night, visited a bowling alley in Williamsburg, then took a taxi back to Manhattan. .

The next morning, he reported having a temperature of 103 degrees, raising questions about his health while he was out in public. The authorities have interviewed Dr. Spencer several times and are also looking at information from both his credit cards and MetroCard to determine his movements.

People infected with Ebola cannot spread the disease until they begin to display symptoms, and it cannot be spread through the air. As people become sicker, the viral load in the body builds, and they become more and more contagious.

thats probably because those infected are from a medical background and they are aware of the protocols and symptoms etc

let a normal civilian or 2 get it nah...they will wanna go take meds for a couple days ,drink hot tea then may wanna visit a doctor etc....by then its already too late to contain

worse yet if that is in trinidad

Anytime it reach Trinidad it will spread exponentially, and that's the harsh truth.

One million Ebola vaccine doses by end of 2015

It said "several hundred thousand" will be produced in the first half of the year.

And vaccines could be offered to health workers on the frontline in West Africa as soon as December 2014.

However, the WHO cautioned that vaccines would not be a "magic bullet" for ending the outbreak.

There are two experimental vaccines, produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the Public Health Agency of Canada, already in clinical trials.

The GSK vaccine is currently undergoing trials in Mali, the UK and the US. Research on the Canadian vaccine is also underway in the US.

Results are expected in December.

After that, trials will move to countries affected by Ebola, probably starting with Liberia.

That will allow researchers to assess the dose needed to provide protection, and it is likely that research will initially target healthcare workers.

There are no plans for mass vaccination before June 2015 but the WHO has not ruled it out.

Dr Marie Paule Kieny, a WHO assistant director-general, said: "While we hope that the massive response, which has been put in place will have an impact on the epidemic, it is still prudent to prepare to have as much vaccine available as possible, if they are proven effective.

"If still the massive effort in response is not sufficient, then vaccine would be a very important tool.

"And even if the epidemic would be already receding by the time we have vaccine available, the modelling seems to say vaccine may still have an impact on controlling the epidemic."

But the WHO said there were a further five vaccines in the pipeline, which could yet play a role in the outbreak.

The World Bank and the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres will help finance the vaccine.
