Local Waterfall ~ Avocat Waterfalls Hike

There are two routes to access Avocat Waterfall the first is a moderate hike from The Blanchisseuse Spring Bridge and will take an hour.

The easiest route is from Avocat Village located two miles south of Blanchisseuse on the Arima, Blanchisseuse Road and will take twenty minutes.

Further downstream there are basins with natural formations that offer the opportunity for adventure.

This place known as 3 Pools has a water-slide, a fifteen foot rock for jumping and 3 basins for swimming and testing one skills against the current.

The area at the river's mouth where the Spring Bridge located called Blanchisseuse Bay.

This is a popular spot for kayaking, camping and hiking and the Spring Bridge re-located from Mayaro in 1952. The Spring Bridge is a monument to the village and is the starting point for nature trails to Paria, Matelot, Three Pools and Avocat Waterfall

Local Beach ~ Negmahwah Beach

Access to get there is from the Maracas North Coast Road and is a one-hour downhill walk to the beach

The return journey is an uphill trek and therefore more challenging. On the left-hand side of the bay, there is a small cove with a cascading falls however in recent years, erosion has made entry difficult.

The place known as Negmawah is an isolated beach on the North Coast situated between Saut D'eau Bay on the West and Cyril Bay on the East. It is one of the many beaches that comprise of the larger La Vache Bay. Negmawah is a French Creole word that means "hideout for slaves."

The Cedula De Population of 1783 invited French Farmers to come to Trinidad and develop the country by opening up estates. Most of the places that surround Negmawah all have French names like Pechon Cove and Mal D'Estomac. They were all estates with French overseers and in these areas evidence of dilapidated cacao trees still exist. Negmawah with its somewhat rugged terrain has no signs of any cacao plantation.

There is something sentimental about Negmawah, an enchanted stillness in the forest. While walking the trail, one can only imagine the horrors of slavery, laboring twelve hours a day, seven days a week, unpaid for an entire lifetime and being whipped.

Surely there must have been a place slaves could go to retreat and have fun or a runaway hideout.

Older residents of Santa Cruz who use to hike over the mountains and go there to swim are aware of its existence.

The newly built concrete road at the entrance to the trail should have a name in recognition for what it signified

Avocat Falls is really nice! Water was clean and it gets really loud when you stand directly under the falls!

Negmahwah Beach is the hike just before the Maracas look out point?
