Don't worry about it. Microsoft says they don't care this time. They will still upgrade to 10.

re- read the highlighted paragraph in the first link...placed here for those who too lazy to click pay attention to the part i highlighted in blue

The consumer free upgrade offer for Windows 10 applies to qualified new and existing devices running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1. Some editions are excluded from the consumer free upgrade—including Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to other Windows 10 enterprise offerings.

We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade. According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions.

simply put - for those too lazy to read
genuine windows 7 or 8 gets a genuine windows 10 already activated
hacked windows 7 or 8 gets a copy of windows 10 but it wont be activated - activation by paying for license ( they will give you a product key) or using a activation software ( crack)

Notification showed up a couple days later so was able to reserve. The Win 7 machine actually has better specs than the 8.1 machine.

Currently using Windows 10 in a VM alongside OSX and it truly feels like a modern OS. I actually feel to stay within Windows and not use OSX.

Apple better come good on Monday cos right now I'm eyeing the Dell XPS 13 or waiting on the Surface Pro 4 announcement...

How to turn your Windows 10 upgrade files into an ISO disk image

One question I've been asked more than any other in recent weeks is whether Microsoft will release Windows 10 in ISO format. No one outside Redmond knows yet, but in the meantime there's an option: Make your own ISO files. Here's how.

Getting the final release on July 29th

Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated. Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.

That's puzzling. I upgraded my (cough, cough) Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it's fully activated by Microsoft.

thanks shogun.

DTAC what you upgraded to is the technical preview of windows 10. not the final release.

as i said before. if you have a non genuine windows 7 (or 8) you WILL get the free upgrade to windows 10 when released BUT it wont be activated.

activated means you wont get free updates and of course no support by Microsoft and its vendors.

how to get activated windows - either PAY for a license which is essentially a product key - or use a crack / keygen. however with SLIC 3.0....this may be a bit harder to use as preactivation cracks like whats used in windows 7 will be totally different for windows 10.

non-activated 7 to activated 10? if so, an update might render it as non-genuine

still dont mean jack.....if you upgrade to windows 10 its going to see that your "genuine" was in fact pirate and well.....u know the rest.

The activation mechanism is the same as what was used for windows 7 (SLIC 2.0 & 2.1)but now its upgraded to SLIC 3.0

hackers may use the same exploit that was used to make windows 7 activated to make an activation tool for windows 10 - who knows...wait and see.... :!:

tuners REL REL HARD OF HEARING

again I say...if windows WAS NOT genuine updating to windows 10 wont change anything...pirate is STILL pirate.

thanks to M_2NR for the below link -

Aul updated the Microsoft blog post today to clarify things once and for all, and it’s bad news for freeloaders: you’re not getting an activated version of Windows 10 RTM (the final build) for free, unless you originally installed the Windows 10 Preview on a device running an activated copy of Windows 7 or 8.1.

simply put..its the SAME offer that was on the table as before...nothing changed.

genuine windows 7/8 gets windows 10 genuine and activated
pirate copy of windows 7/8 gets windows 10 but it WONT be activated.

agreed Microsoft has been making vague statements over the free licensing / upgrade aspect over the past few days / week.

i think all that was needed was a bit of common sense to know what theyre saying and more importantly what theyre NOT saying. tuners hearing "free" and getting all warm and happy inside.

the thing that bothering me though is no floppy drivers on the disc.. WTF Microsoft...how much space could a floppy driver take up on a dvd / blu ray disc....

so in essence....STILL nothing changed....i dunno why tuners frothing over activated or non activated ..is not like there wont be any activation crack out there for it.

ok so let me break it down for tuners.

IF
A) you're using bootleg windows 7/8 you subscribed to the insider program you will get genuine & activated BUT the catch is....only as long as you stay with the insider program - ie continue testing Microsoft software...your new name - George the lab rat - if you opt out the build will expire and you WILL have to either downgrade back to your original O.S or pay for a windows 10 license or use crack

B) you're using bootleg windows 7/8 you will get windows 10...but it wont be activated

C) you're using genuine windows 7/8 you will get windows 10 fully supported and activated.

to tuner DTAC if i understand you correctly you upgraded to the technical preview.
the technical preview is jut that a preview - a release candidate or build. its not meant for public release just yet. they may make additions -or subtractions to it depending.

it WILL remain activated and "genuine" as long as u continue testing the software builds for them even after july 29th release date
if you opt out- the build will expire and well....you know the rest

It not that hard of understanding. Microsoft is in it to make money....they not going to let pirates get their O.S for free but they are giving it away to legit customers.

I think the take away from this is you guys should start paying for allyuh blasted software....you know what comes after freeness......
