"In the sugar cane fields of the Naparimas in south Trinidad, the Colonial
Company, owners of Usine Ste Madeleine, built the largest sugar refinery in the British Empire in 1870. The mega-factory could refine 460 tons of sugar per day in crop season, using the vacuum pan system."

The Usine Ste Madeleine sugar factory made sugar crystals, unlike the small operations, which produced muscovado, sugar which is like hard candy.

There are three ponds around the factory, one north of the plant which contained spring-fed water for cooling the steam-driven machinery, one located near the sports club which watered livestock and also supplied cooling water, and a nasty lees, or settling pond, which is where the effluent from the refining process ended.

As early as 1878 someone wrote to the San Fernando Gazette complaining about the terrible stink which overflowed into Cipero River, an odour no one who travelled through or lived in the area can ever forget.

Local Krishna Maharaj


Krishna Maharaj (born January 26, 1939) is a Trinidad and Tobago-born British businessman and brother of Ramesh Maharaj, former Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1987 he was convicted by a Florida court for the double murders of Derrick Moo Young and his son, Duane Young, and was sentenced to death.

The alleged motives as to the murders was that the elder victim Derrick Moo Young had fraudulently taken money from Krishna Maharaj's relatives in Trinidad and that Maharaj wanted to confront Moo Young to demand that he repay the money. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 2002. Maharaj absolutely denies committing the murders for which he was convicted.

Maharaj arranged a false meeting with Derrick Moo Young in the DuPont Plaza Hotel. Derrick Moo Young turned up to room 1215 together with his son Duane. Once inside the room, Maharaj is said to have appeared with a gun from behind a door. An argument results, and the father, Derrick Moo Young, was shot to death by Maharaj. The prosecution stated that the son, Duane, was taken upstairs in the suite and shot by Maharaj.

In 2001, 300 British politicians, from various different parties, wrote a letter to the Gov. Jeb Bush, asking for a retrial, saying there were 'astonishing flaws' in the case against him and his original trial. He claims to have seven witnesses that place him 25 miles away from the crime scene at the time of the murders.

The Tayra has short, course fur with soft underfur.

The body of the Tayra is generally dark brown or black, with the exception of the head and neck, which can often be paler in colour.

This species also has a triangular patch on its chest which is generally white to yellow in colour.

The Tayra has a large, slender, muscular body with a tail that is two thirds the length of its body.

They have strong claws adapted for climbing and running, indicating preference for terrestrial and arboreal environments.

Males are generally larger than females.

The Tayra has been described as an opportunistic omnivore with a diverse range of food sources including small and medium sized vertebrates, invertebrates, fruits, honey, and carrion.

Although they have been classified as forest specialists, this species is able to forage in disturbed areas, agricultural lands and forested areas near human settlements.

The Tayra has thus developed various foraging methods such as caching fruits.

Although the species has been described as solitary, they have been recorded foraging in pairs or small groups.

This species is active during the day mostly during twilight hours.

Tayras have been known to construct dens in hollow tree

Tayra mates once per year, but certain time has not been determined yet.

When animals are ready to mate, they produce cat-like sounds.

After pregnancy of nine weeks, female gives birth to usually 2 to 3 babies.

Young Tayras depend on the mother's milk for the first 2 to 3 months of their life.

Tayra can survive up to 18 years in captivity.

Lifespan in the wild is unknown

Theory has been discounted really; more recent papers demonstrated the much more powerful bite force this species has when compared to other similiar size frugivores.

Also very hard fruits have been found in the diet so the bizare facial features allow an advantage for harder fruits.

But its still not a very well understood species and never easy to find so lots of work still to do

The extremely strong bite force that these bats have and where the muscles etc connect to the skull and jaw.

But its a bizarre little bat with lots of unknown anatomical features like the chin flap, wing patterns and clear membrane on parts of the wing
