Agreed. But it's always best to err on the side of caution.

As a doctor friend once told me, imagine falling off your bike on the highway and skating into a vehicle (assuming you live). With gears you will have some broken bones that will need to be operated on, put in casts etc. Without gears you have the same problem, except, your skin also gone (road rash). Your skin the the biggest defense you have against infections. Not having you skin to cover up your insides severely complicates things.

TLDR: Gears would not save your life but it still has a lot of value.
