I have a stupid question.....

So the camera has a monochrome setting......and you can also save a copy of an existing picture as monochrome on the camera itself...

What kind on image quality is lost by using the latter......the thing is you can always make a color shot b&W but not a B&W shot color....

I am sure there is....but what is the difference and how much is it noticable?

Bacon, forget about the Monochrome setting on the cam.

Much better off to shoot in RAW and apply those same settings at will afterwards, or even better yet, perform B/W conversions in Lightroom or PS where you have numerous other options and lots of control.

As you rightly said. All your colour data is lost by shooting in monochrome.
