Basically what occurs is self preservation. The driver, sensing an impending crash, tries to steer the vehicle in a direction that would cause least harm to him/her. To hell with the other passengers' safety.

Why bother explaining he won't understand until he drives or had to make an emergency maneuver

The instinct for self preservation does not necessarily mean one will survive every time.
