Local Recession

1. By Tim Teemal

2. By Tony Bedassie

What does being in a recession mean for the average citizen?

The recession of the 80's saw many a multi national closing down operations here and leaving.

Many a fast food establishment closed because people didn't have money to buy.

Those of you who remember Woolworth and Johnson and Johnson on High street in San Fernando. Both closed and left.

Bata, a shoe manufacturer which had retail outlets throughout the island also closed down.

Dunlop our local tyre manufacturing company did likewise.

These are just a few that come to mind.

Being in a recession means that your buying power is significantly reduced.

Wages and salaries remain the same or fall while the cost of goods and services increases.

Many persons who had been gainfully employed suddenly find themselves on the bread line much as what has happened with the workers at Arcelor Mittal. The spin off or trickle down effect goes way beyond the 700 employees who have lost their jobs. It is a chain reaction. 700 direct employees yes, but how many more indirect ones via service companies, suppliers and contractors.

These workers themselves would also be providers of employment, hiring masons, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, grass cutters and so on.

With the impact of all these negatives the economy contracts meaning that economic activity slows down, we experience negative growth.

Government is then forced to cut it's social spending concentrating instead on basic necessities. Hence the public outcry when projects such as the Tarouba stadium which has the potential to become a burden on the tax payer while adding no value to the economy at this time or anytime in the near future.

With the stagnation and indeed retraction of the economy the value of our currency depreciates, we are already seeing this being manifested. Over the weekend trading online was at a rate of $7TT to $1US.

Your country becomes bleak with many empty buildings where once existed thriving businesses.

Many a family lose their homes as loss of jobs result in their inability to pay their mortgages.

The central bank has already began increasing the MMR which will result in an increase in your mortgage interest in the very near future. Remember a bank operates to make a profit and with declining economic activity they too will be feeling the pinch. Their responsibility is to their stockholders/shareholders first and their customers after. They will be forced into foreclosures.

This is fast becoming our reality and should things not change we will be forced to make adjustments to the way we live.

The need to diversify the economy which is normally given lip service during times of prosperity becomes ever more apparent during these times. Civil society would do well to look beyond their racial and party lines and insist that their representatives work toward achieving this objective.

How do you diversify however when you are cashed strapped. The time to diversify is when things are normal, when money is flowing.

Successive governments have failed in this regard opting instead for pie in the sky dreams which never bear fruit. A country which can feed itself is well on the way to success.

Growing locally and buying locally is one way in which we can keep our much needed foreign exchange within the country.

Some of you would remember the mid to late 80's when certain things were put on the negative list, meaning we just couldn't import them in order to preserve our foreign exchange.

I am not trying to scare you just speaking from experience. You must be prepared for what's ahead. One hopes that it does not come to that and things turn around in the near future, however our dependence on oil revenues continues to land us in this position time and time again. Will we ever learn?

Local Litter Bug

So leaving Brasso Seco last week Sunday and returning to the highway via the Arima Blanchisseuse road, this white pickup (TDH1532)roars past me and has the audacity to throw out all his fast food containers onto the roadway whilst driving in front of me ...

I promptly took a picture of his vehicle and started to give him lights of course so he could see that I saw what he did and was pissed accordingly... he slows down eventually and crawls so I can pass him and then keeps his pace behind me for the rest of the leg on the Bye pass road, knowing full well he has done wrong!!!!!!

Yes I got your licence number after you did your deed.

I may not have posted online if you had turned around to pick up YOUR trash...but know you obviously are accustom to doing this wherever you go!!!!...

I have no qualms in posting your vehicle so others will know that you DO NOT CARE for our environment!!!!

Local St Ann ~ Fondes Amandes Hills

By the river side.

Someone lit a fire within minutes it took the hills, by the time we got to the fire was too high

We can easily fight a small fire once detected early.

The place is really dry and the wind is strong

Really need to have tighter control over river users.
