Yes it was the same choice in 2015 and 2020 and the people spoke clearly. Trying to act like it is some grave dilemma in 2025 is contrary to what has become a clear pattern of results.

Nevertheless, while for sure UNC sending Kamla, Rowley is going to retire. So it will be Kamla vs whoever PNM crapaud in a tie.

Your assertion is partially correct.
Trinidad is a two-party system, so the choice is basically UNC or PNM. Third party successes or major in-roads have been anomalies based on rare socioeconomic conditions (NAR, COP). It's possible, just very difficult to do and the timing needs to be right.

what several current and former UNC members (and Joe Public to some degree) are asking for is for someone else to lead the UNC to tackle the PNM. The reality is that some PNM members are disillusioned with the PNM, and some UNC members are disillusioned with the UNC. Meaning that there is a massive number of swing voters in terms of RAW numbers, not constituencies. But raw numbers doh say nothing, just as the COP. Constituency votes count.

Let us separate the person from the party, because KPB != UNC; and the UNC != KPB. Same for PNM, but their internals are usually better managed with less ragequitting.

The billion dollar question is - does the UNC stand a better chance at winning the election with the incumbent leadership, or a new face?

NO THANKS, KAMLA
Small parties snub UNC leader on forming election coalition
Khamarie Rodriguez Jun 14, 2023 Updated Jun 14, 2023 Comments

Small political parties are not tripping over themselves to join with the Opposition United National Congress (UNC) to defeat the People’s National Movement (PNM) in the August 14 local government election.

Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) political leader Phillip Edward Alexander said yesterday that a coalition with the UNC to contest the local government election was not what Trinidad and Tobago needed.

In an interview with the Express, Alexander said he had no intention of uniting with the UNC, as the party was no different from the People’s National Movement (PNM).

Alexander was responding to a call by UNC political leader on Monday night for smaller parties to join forces with the UNC to defeat the PNM in the local government election, and then general election.

He said, “Joining up with the UNC is more lazy politics....joining up with the UNC is eeny-meeny-miny-moe politics, that is exchange politics. Trinidad needs change away from the PNM and UNC.”

Alexander said Persad-Bissessar calling for unity to remove the PNM was no different from the PNM’s call in 2015 “to remove the widely corrupt and despised UNC.

“We the people of Trinidad and Tobago have to realise moving from party A to party B and back to party A doesn’t help us and does nothing to for the country. We stay stuck in the same cycle,” he said.

Alexander said the UNC political leader was disrespectful to the smaller political parties, in the way she invited them to unite.

“Kamla is very disrespectful with this, to stand up on her public forum and calling for people to join with her, that’s throwing a fish net. The only people you can catch when throwing a fish net is fish. She knows my telephone number and if she wanted to talk to the Progressive Empowerment Party she would have called me and we would have met and we would have told her the things we were concerned about and if they were willing to fix those things we would have been willing to talk but now it’s far too long,” he said.

https://www.cnc3.co.tt/padarath-on-para ... 741ht1dj4m

United National Congress frontline parliamentarians have trashed statements by colleagues Anita Haynes-Alleyne and Rushton Paray. Meanwhile, UNC MP Barry Padarath says the UNC has been enduring “undermining and backstabbing” by both, as well as MPs Rai Ragbir and Rodney Charles, for more than two years.

Parliamentarians commented on Monday after Paray clarified his call for UNC national executive elections, saying he is not challenging UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s stewardship.

Paray also said some MPs silently grumbled about the lack of internal polls but capitulated publicly.

Paray’s stance on Natex polls is supported by MPs Charles, Ragbir (who called for leadership polls also) and Haynes-Alleyne.

The only MP who has not commented is Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally, who has had issues with UNC’s leadership and deputy leader on matters involving the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha. He is not seeking nomination for the seat.

UNC Chaguanas East MP Vandana Mohit slammed Paray last Sunday.

Yesterday, Padarath said, “MPs Haynes, Paray, Ragbir and Charles are engaged in a deceitful charade. They’re using the Natex election (where the leadership isn’t up for challenge) as an opener to destabilise the party and ultimately attack Mrs Persad-Bissessar.

“We as a party have been enduring the undermining and the backstabbing for over two years in the environment of hushed tones. Their plan is to use the Natex election to train their guns on Mrs Persad-Bissessar.”

He added, “Haynes’ media salvo was part of the passive-aggressive approach carefully calculated to respond to parliamentary colleagues to give the impression that this has nothing to do with the leader, when we know for a fact that it does. The commonality that exists with Haynes, Paray and others is vaulting ambition to parachute into UNC’s hierarchy without putting in the work.”

He said, “Anita was gifted with a UNC safe seat at a time when no one knew who she was, and she had no impressive track record in the party. That’s what Mr Panday would have called a Maha Neemakaram (ungrateful). Anita has never expressed issues with the Natex or the leader but, for quite a while, has openly engaged in leadership ambitions of her own if she is to be truthful. Therefore, having found herself in the circumstances that she has with Paray and a few dissidents, I await the outcome …”

Padarath added, “The question must now be asked: who betrayed the UNC in the electoral college in March 2023 by voting against UNC’s nominee? Was Miss Haynes part of a conspiracy to undermine her own party? Did Mr Paray lead a conspiracy to betray the UNC? Were Ragbir and Charles’ votes among the three to betray the UNC?”

UNC chairman Dave Tancoo said, “The tendency to disrespect and insult parliamentary colleagues and members of the UNC is born of supreme arrogance. It’s disdain for the very persons whose backs and whose decades of work, gave them the very office they now hold.

“We’re in Lent, a period that includes the betrayal of Christ and a period of fasting and repentance. We’re also in the period of Ramadan when our Muslim brothers and sisters fast to atone for sins and nourish their relationship with God. We’re in the period of Holi when an attempt to destroy Prahalad, a devotee of God, resulted in the extinction of Holika by the very fire she started.

“During this period of repentance, I urge all interested in continuing to build on the foundations of those who went before to put ego aside and let us continue the positive momentum towards government.”

Failed mutiny –Jearlean

UNC deputy leader Jearlean John said, “The contrived complaint that there has been a too aggressive response to ‘a reasonable request for internal elections’ is simply people attempting to play smart with foolishness after their major miscalculation. They’re now trying to back out of a failed mutiny that lacked support.”

John said to suggest they acknowledge and honour Persad-Bissessar is dishonest and apprehensive.

This is a classic case of overreach and getting high on one’s own supply. What has not been placed in the public domain by the same folks who deliberately and cynically enabled all of this unwarranted public discourse is an attempt to spin and feign innocence and piety.

“UNC’s history is replete with those who, prior and present, take for granted the fact that they’re comfortably ensconced in some of UNC’s safest seats, requiring no sweat or hustle, those who fool themselves into thinking that it’s by the sweat of their own brow that they now inhabit UNC’s prized political space.”

John said UNC members have no tolerance “for those who deliberately misunderstand, misinterpret, misrepresent, and further take for granted their decades of loyalty, blood, sweat, and tears”.

“The backlash playing out in the public domain is a well-needed dose of reality and the clarity of where loyalty lies,” she said.

Kamla lays down the UNC law

... Tells Paray, dissidents toe party line or face expulsion

by

Akash Samaroo

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is threatening Mayaro MP Rushton Paray with expulsion from the party if he begins to vote against the party line in Parliament.

In an exclusive interview with Guardian Media yesterday, Persad-Bissessar spoke frankly about the latest internal discord after Paray, on a public platform last Friday, issued a call for the United National Congress’ executive to “respect the voice of its members” and call the party’s internal elections, which he said are due in June.

Given the friction between Paray and Persad-Bissessar since the former’s announcement, Guardian Media asked what their relationship would be like leading up to the next general election.

Addressing Paray and any other dissidents within the party, Persad-Bissessar said, “Thus far, they have not exhibited any divisions in the Parliament, they have voted along the party lines, I don’t know if he is one of those who spoilt their ballots for the election of the President (Christine Kangaloo) but in the Parliament thus far, they have gone along with the line put forward by the (chief) whip.

“But the day they should break the party line, the party’s constitution is very clear again on what would be the consequence, they will be expelled from the party.”

Persad-Bissessar admitted she believes the timing of Paray’s statements is not by chance. She questioned if Paray is being used as a puppet for the ruling People’s National Movement to destabilise the UNC

“Why is it at this time all of this is happening? It happened when I announced that nominations for general election will close, and screening will begin thereafter. Now, I wonder when you look at the timing of all of this, and the PNM is really good at this, every election they come up with this. They infiltrate or attempt to infiltrate, and I am very concerned about this, whether this is another infiltration by the PNM in order to damage the UNC?” she wondered.

Persad-Bissessar also said she has recently discovered that Paray was a financier of the PNM.

“He said that himself, I am repeating himself. It is reported that Mr Paray said that as a businessman, political parties came and yes, he gave donations to the PNM, he said it, he said that in his own words,” Persad-Bissessar claimed.

She said this was not disclosed to the party when he was screened for the Mayaro constituency prior to the 2020 general election.

“I only heard this when this whole ranting and raving started. He did not disclose when he applied to be a candidate, that was never disclosed. Had he disclosed it, we would have had serious doubts and thoughts for the very reason that we are now having this upheaval coming from him. We would have had serious doubts about that,” the UNC leader added.

Since going public with his call for internal elections, there has been speculation that Paray would challenge Persad-Bissessar’s leadership. Paray has said when the time comes to challenge for the position, if the people and his family want him to lead, he will take up the challenge.

Since then, the majority of MPs, councillors and senior party members have rallied to Persad-Bissessar’s defence, saying she is the party’s leader.

However, Persad-Bissessar said this will be a very dark day in the party’s history.

“I think it would be ludicrous and we will become a laughingstock if a PNM financier, a self-admitted financier you know, should become the leader of the UNC, we would be a laughing stock and the PNM would be the biggest laughers of all.”

She also said she could not understand what the fuss was about regarding Paray’s call for internal elections. She reiterated that it will be held when it is constitutionally due but did not commit to a date, saying that would be for the party’s executive to declare. She said the constitution is clear that national executive members serve two years.

The last internal election for those positions was held in June 2022.

She said according to the constitution, candidates will have five weeks’ notice to mount their challenge for the positions.

Calls to Paray for a response to Persad-Bissessar’s statements went unanswered last night.

Former PP minister accuses Kamla of ‘anti-democratic behaviour’

Former People’s Partnership (PP) minister, Dr Devant Maharaj, is accusing the party’s political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar of acting like a dictator, in light of her response to calls by Mayaro MP Rushton Paray, for internal elections to be held.

Dr Devant Maharaj, who is now an adjunct professor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, released a statement today, highlighting what he describes as “continued flaws in Mrs Persad-Bissessar's leadership”.

“Disregarding Paray's call for internal election’s underscores Persad-Bissessar's authoritarian tendencies, prioritizing her grip on power over the genuine demands of party members, thereby undermining the essence of democratic decision-making,” Dr Maharaj said in the release.

He added: “Persad-Bissessar's reluctance to embrace internal elections and her aversion to being challenged hint at her well-known insecurity in her leadership and a reluctance to subject herself to democratic scrutiny.”

According to Dr Maharaj, the UNC leader’s current handling of calls for internal elections by Mayaro MP Rushton Paray are no different how other senior party members were treated in the past—"dissenting voices” were expelled, stifled, and squelched.

“Stifling internal party democracy and suppressing the diversity of opinion is a hallmark of her leadership style,” the UNC ideologue observes.

“Persad-Bissessar's divisive rhetoric creates an environment of fear and forces conformity within the party, alienating dissenting voices and eroding the spirit of inclusivity and participatory democracy.”

He questions the “failure to commit to a timeline for internal elections despite the UNC’s constitutional obligations” and warns that those chosen to contest the 2025 General Elections will be specially hand-picked for their loyalty to the party’s leader, above all else, including the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago.

Meanwhile, former PP trade minister, Vasant Bharath, who in the past has gone up against Kamla Persad-Bissessar for the position of party leader, is also raising concerns about what he sees as dictatorship within the UNC under her tenure.

On his Facebook page, Bharath quotes an excerpt from the UNC’s Constitution:

“To struggle against any tendency towards authoritarianism, autocracy and dictatorship and to promote a viable diffusion of centres of power and decision-making as check against the concentration and abuse of power…”

“One of the party’s founding principles. No commentary required from me. Judge for yourself,” he wrote in preface to the excerpt.

Last Friday (March 22), Mayaro MP Rushton Paray hosted a press conference in which he called for the hosting of UNC internal elections when they are constitutionally due in June this year, in order to put the party on a sound footing for the 2025 General Elections.  Since his call, several UNC MPs and Senators have issued press releases and statements declaring their loyalty to the party’s political leader, with only a few party members agreeing with Paray and echoing his call.

Paray was forced to issue a follow-up statement of his own, stating categorically that his call was not an attack on the UNC political leader.

However, Mrs Persad-Bissessar has since threatened the Mayaro MP with expulsion from the party if he begins to vote against the party line in Parliament.

“But the day they should break the party line, the party’s constitution is very clear again on what would be the consequence, they will be expelled from the party,” she told Guardian Media in an exclusive interview.

Persad-Bissessar admitted she believes the timing of Paray’s statements is not by chance, and questioned whether Paray was being used as a puppet for the ruling PNM to destabilise the UNC.

MEDIA RELEASE
To: All Editors
From: UNC Communications
Date: 27th March 2024

STATEMENT BY DR TIM GOPEESINGH RE: RUSHTON PARAY

The ongoing issue in the public domain involving MP Rushton Paray and his cohorts compels me to make the following statement:
The well-known and calculated attempts of the PNM’s destructive orchestrated and destabilizing machinery against the UNC once more began a few months ago with these dissident MPs.

Their deliberate manipulation, manoeuvring, and encouragement of some of our MPs so close to a possible early general election was always expected as is PNM’s history, particularly when PNM plants or party members have recently been discovered among our UNC MPs, in the team headed by MP for Mayaro Rushton Paray.

As a proud UNC member of 30 years, worker, soldier, National executive member, CEO, current Chief Operations Officer, Senator, elected MP for 13 years, and Cabinet Minister from 2010-2015, the UNC DNA has always been in my blood and will remain so in perpetuity.
These MPs' collective, engineered, and sinister attempt to destroy our great noble, strong, tested, highly-performing historic party of nearly 39 years is purely reprehensible.

Not one UNC DNA nor chromosome is in their blood.

They never understood nor toiled and laboured in the long, arduous, and patriotic struggles and battles in the UNC against this wicked spiteful, hateful, corrupt, destructive, and incompetent PNM government, past and present.
They have, and never will, appreciate nor identify and fight with us against this PNM oppression, but prefer to be used and manipulated by their well-known PNM friends and buddies.

These dissidents’ political graveyards will be strewn with balisier flowers.

Our laser-focused, brilliant competent, capable, tried and tested, patriotic, internationally distinguished political leader, the Honourable Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has my fullest support and will unquestionably lead the UNC into government whenever Prime Minister Rowley calls the General elections.

Dr Tim Gopeesingh,
UNC Chief Operations Officer,
Former UNC MP.

It's obvious that Kams and those on her side are not putting the party above their own needs. How much times has she lost various elections now? General elections twice and other local government elections in between? Other political leaders would've stepped down for way less than that. The UNC is in shambles and will continue to remain so for the foreseeable future with the current leadership.

The UNC is in shambles and will continue to remain so for the foreseeable future with the current leadership.

Gopeesingh sounding good... but who he is accusing now of being is who he was back in early 2010. He was also labelled a "dissident" when he endorsed kamla in 2010 instead of panday.

Of course i agree with gopeesingh then because Panday was loosing elections crippling the UNC, as what Kamla is doing now.

"Not one UNC DNA nor chromosome is in their blood.

They never understood nor toiled and laboured in the long, arduous, and patriotic struggles and battles in the UNC against this wicked spiteful, hateful, corrupt, destructive, and incompetent PNM government, past and present. "

But how come they were vetted and selected as candidates twice? Imagine the pornstar calling them neophytes! Not to mention the former man going from holding Kamla umbrella to sitting next to the boss lady in the Red house. What have any of the current natex done to put the party in government? I guess PEA , a former PNM and COP member, will fix everything.
