A thin black horizontal line just appeared about two inches from the top of the screen on my Toshiba 46SL412U LED.

It's the TV. Not the connections, the HTPC or the receiver. Tried all those things, but the line shows up on the screen even when everything else is off or disconnected. The line itself is more solid on one side than the other, but it's visible all the way across.

Reading around for fixes and/or explanations, but I will ask preemptively: What's a contact for a reliable repair service for HDTVs?

I called Circuit Zone, where I bought the TV, and they said to bring it in for them to check it out. Guy said the worst-case scenario is that the actual panel is faulty, which would be too costly to be feasible. But he said it's also probably the board, which is replaceable. I'll carry it in on Saturday.

not necessarily - had this happen to LED and plasma panels and it turned out to be the board in both cases.

Left it in Circuit City this morning. Felt bad as I left it in a corner by itself and walked away. I wonder if it misses me. :(

^ good sub for mainstream ht, bad for music, compared to the others its a steal, will blow them away in output and most likely extension.

JBL 10" $159. A bit pricier but a good option as well.

what is the age of the TV?

Audio Return Channel (ARC) is only avilable on HDMi v1.4
if your TV has v1.3 then it will not support ARC

if there is no ARC on the TV it just means that you will not be able to get surround sound for cable TV or other devices plugged directly into the TV like a playstation etc.
You will get surround sound on content played on the Sony 1000w Bluray player.

See instead if the Sony 1000w Bluray has HDMI IN and Composite Video IN then you should hook up your cable box directly to that and not to the TV in order to get surround sound on the cable.

Note that unless you are paying for HD cable, the regular digital cable is in stereo and your Sony 1000w would actually be creating a make-up surround sound from the stereo feed, so it won't be true surround sound.
