Voting in the United National Congress’s (UNC) internal election began just over two hours ago, but already concerns have been raised about some aspects of the electoral process.
Candidate for the leadership of the party Vasant Bharath says he had some issues with the quality of the election ink being used.
Bharath says the ink washed off his finger easily, shortly after casting his vote.
He tells LoopTT that the elections committee has already been informed of the discrepancy as he says with the ink washed off there would be no evidence that individuals would have already cast their votes.
The leader of the Team Reconnect slate also had some concerns about the voters’ list – concerns which he has previously expressed, which has also been shared by several others.
He claims that some UNC members with party cards were not able to vote, including his father, whose name, he says, was not included on the list of voters.
Bharath explained that there were other issues encountered which have already been reported to the election committee.
“Certain presiding officers did not show up at their stations…We’ve also come across in two separate instances one in Cumuto/Manzanilla and one in Woodbrook where persons are campaigning in the vicinity of the polling stations, which is not allowed.”
However, he says the process went smoothly, very similar to the process used during general elections.
Former House Speaker Wade Mark and his wife Sushilla Ramkissoon-Mark also cast their vote this morning and reported a smooth voting process as well.
Bharath cast his vote at the Aranguez North Secondary School around 9 am.
Voting closes at 6 pm.
