Traffic snarled across Trinidad as police block roads

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Police in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday blocked major roadways and paralyzed traffic in the twin-island Caribbean nation amid a salary dispute with the government.

Roadblocks forced exasperated motorists to sit in traffic jams for hours. The gridlock kept passengers from reaching the airport, prompting some airlines to delay flights, and forced several businesses and schools to close. Many students were unable to take end-of-term exams.

While police are negotiating for higher pay, union officials did not describe the gridlock as a job action. But police welfare association official Roger Alexander implied the police roadblocks would last all day, suggesting that people "walk with your breakfast, lunch and dinner."

He told a morning TV program the roadblocks across the twin-island country were meant to "show the importance of the police on the ground."

The islands' national security minister met Monday afternoon in an emergency meeting with leaders of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to try to ease the impasse.

Police are demanding a 14 percent salary hike. It's not clear what the government is offering.

Opposition lawmaker Jack Warner urged police to rethink negotiation tactics, saying thousands of law-abiding citizens were being "imprisoned in vehicles that are stranded in the traffic."

"The innocent public should be made to pay the price for the dispute between the police and the government," Warner said in a statement.

Trinidad and Tobago is the second biggest energy producer in the Caribbean after nearby Venezuela.

Rollingstock, sorry if my "read bet the lines approach" didn't include yr level of intelligence, as your lines to read bet seem to be that of an infant copy book..

So s'one insinuated - Caura, Rum, Indians - Drunk...
I merely stated - East POS, Beetham, Laventille & environs - Crime...

So what was accomplished this morning? hmmm
Let's see
1. Loss of public trust and confidence
2. Law abiding citizens being subjected to emotional and psychological abuse.
3. Children who couldn't reach to school to participate in their exams
4. Persons who were carded for surgeries had to have it postponed
5. Persons missing their flights to travel abroad
6. Doctors and nurses who could not relieve their colleagues to tend to the sick at hospitals.
7. Children who were stranded because their school buses were caught up in a road block.
8. Even police officers themselves were caught up.. So who was really hurting who?
Officers what goes around comes around... Thank God we had no police officers who were shot or seriously injured........ because our doctors and nurses were stranded.

And the amazing thing is no major CRIME was detected during this impersonation of work.. SMH.

^ Oh really now?

As a police officer they took an oath to protect and serve, their actions was borne of spite and clearly with the intention to cause hardship.

I agree with the fight for a proper salary, I live it every month end, but I knew what I was getting into before I joined, since then I have qualified myself and if the need arise I can leave in the morning and acquire a better remuneration in the private sector.

I lol when I see fellow comrades with their 'fight the good fight' posts on social media and look at their disingenuous morals, persons who are lazy, rude to the public and frankly inept at their duties clamoring for a raise; and yet see the suffering of those who work tirelessly for a pittance.

But the fact is in 2010 the association was in a stronger bargaining position yet crumpled and accepted a measly raise and now in 2015 with public opinion of the police at an all time low and a dwindling oil price which or economy is based on they want to bargain for a hefty raise.

It felt good to see fellow officers rally together and stand firm in their convictions but at what cost? Alienating an already despondent public? Why not target that same enthusiasm towards proper policing. What is the TTPS willing to exchange for a raise? No more roadblocks during rush hour?

I still feel good to know that we could have come together and done something as a cohesive unit but ill timed, ill focused and at what cost.

I could understand where you are coming from,I am not trying to justify their reasoning for this action but at the same time I understand their plight. You being a police officer I would have thought you of all people would have seen it differently, you put your life on the line on a daily basis that alone is a heavy cost. When certain distinguished members in our country are raking in millions through blatant corruption how is the police service supposed to feel when the CPO offers them a measly 9%.Not trying to make this a political discussion but still it needs to be mentioned. If oil prices are so low then why is government spending seemingly unaffected if anything its increasing. Simultaneously, how is possible for the prisons service to get 21% and offer 9% to the people that are on the front line of crime.I am not saying that there aren't lazy and unproductive officers but there are the hard working ones who do deserve such.So in colloquial terms: Jus give di people dey money

you say fair is fair so then condemn the actions of the police yesterday, cause what they did can never be fair to people
when police are recruiting, there are long lines of folks trying to get in, they must know the risk involved ,so that's why I think it silly to include that they put their life on the line.... blah blah blah

that is no excuse to hurt those you swore to protect just for proper compensation
