The University of the West Indies' Seismic Research Center is reporting an earthquake hit Friday night northwest of Trinidad.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — The University of the West Indies' Seismic Research Center is reporting an earthquake hit Friday night northwest of Trinidad.

The quake measured magnitude 6.4 at a depth of 37 miles (60 kilometers).

The Seismic Research Center said it had received no reports of damage or injuries.

Bing:See Trinidad on a map

It was the strongest earthquake in Trinidad since 1997, when a magnitude-6.1 quake caused some damage on the island of Tobago north of Trinidad.

The center said Friday's earthquake was felt in Trinidad, St. Vincent, Grenada and Guyana.

North Trinidad lies on the PNM plate and South on the UNC plate. The Jack Plate, recently identified by geologists, came from the underbelly of the South plate and caused this disruption. Allyuh people must study geo-politics. The big one coming on October 21.

honestly it was stronger than others d past 5 yrs or so but not as strong as 1 i remember in 2006- that one had glass windows rattling loud and cut off power all over

perhaps because that one had the epicenter on land as opposed to west of trinidad

Ahhh! At least some one remembers that big one. Started off as the usual lateral movement but after. 5-6 seconds the earth started to dip. It would have occurred sometime september-october 2006

Second Update – Earthquake north of Trinidad
Sep.29.2006

The magnitude of the earthquake which occurred at 9:08am local time near the north coast of Trinidad on 29/09/06 has been revised to 5.8. The preliminary magnitude was given as 5.5.
Aftershock north of Trinidad
On Friday afternoon 29th September at 2:23 p.m. local time, an earthquake occurred near Churapa Bay on the North coast of Trinidad. This event is an aftershock following the 9:08am earthquake. A preliminary location for this event is 10.83°N 61.43°W. Thus far, the event was reported as felt throughout Trinidad, Tobago, St. Vincent and Grenada. There have been reports of three injuries in south Trinidad but no reports of damage thus far.

With earthquakes of this magnitude scientists will expect aftershocks - other earthquakes - of similar or smaller magnitude. Unfortunately, earthquakes cannot be predicted and we cannot say when these aftershocks may occur. Please note that scientists from the Seismic Research Unit HAVE NOT issued a warning that a larger earthquake will occur later on today.

Please note that these magnitude 5.5 and 5.1 earthquakes are not large enough to cause a tsunami. Tsunami warnings HAVE NOT been issued for the Caribbean.
