Anya Ayoung Chee

Any story about innovation is a story about human beings. They are stories of exploration and discovery, inventiveness and creation. Stories of how the human imagination at work drives competitiveness and powers innovation. As T&T Rocks and Abovegroup discovered they are the stories all around us.

Local Walking Group ~ White Hall Striders circa 1974

Our motto is 'Keep moving or perish'

Great example to the rest of us to get up and exercise.

These 'fellows' on a Saturday Morning up Chancellor or on the Savannah ... and they are indeed a lively bunch,.... always pleasant and polite, with a very loud 'Good Morning.'!

White Hall Striders circa 1974. Founding Fathers still part of the group - Stokely Regis & Junior Stoute

We are actually all male models and metrosexuals (just in differing gradations).

We do pedicures and facials- please note our perfect skin tone. You can’t see our feet but they are perfect.

Between us we have a lot of heavy metal and replacement bits in our bodies; steel pins, valves, nuts and bolts.

Please also note (well) that between us we are pollsters, linguists, restaurant critics. political analysts, Chinese mafia, boat captains, engineers, pilots, business gurus, dentists, vets and theoretical experts at everything- we are not jokers.

To be part of this group we ask only that you can walk, have a thick skin and are loud. Our motto is “Keep moving or perish!” We only expel members if they are very obnoxious or very boring.

We need some women to join us - there was one a long time ago but she left the country.

Another one took up cycling instead. We are great friends. This is our fraternity. If anything happens to anyone we all swoop in to help.

Local History

The Galera Point Light at the northeastern corner of Trinidad. Built by the British in 1897, the lighthouse is east of the town of Toco and is usually called Toco Light in Trinidad.

The photo at the right was taken sometime between 1910 and 1926, and it shows the lighthouse in its best days. Standing in front of the tower, at left, is the lighthouse keeper. On the right is Sharon's great grandfather, the Rev. George McCartney, an Anglican pastor who established the Anglican Church in Toco and served there for many years.

The photo at left below, taken by Sharon's stepfather Derek Williams, show the lighthouse in the sadder condition that prevailed as recently as 2005.

The lighthouse has been stripped of its historic lantern and lens, and the tower has been encased in a concrete shell. The tower itself was clearly neglected and in poor condition. .

A local organization, Stakeholders Against Destruction for Toco (SAD), was lobbying the government to establish a national park in the area and restore the lighthouse as a tourist attraction: "Absentee ownership has resulted in the area becoming a de facto public space and SAD is lobbying the government to seize this opportunity to invest in the preservation of this exceptionally serene and scenic area, and to convert it into a revenue- and employment-generating Nature and Heritage Park."

This would parallel the preservation of Chacachacare Light, a twin of the Galera Point Light, in Chacachacare National Park.

So far, there is no national park, but the government has renovated and repainted the lighthouse, securing it from further deterioration. Parking and picnic facilities have also been provided. The results can be seen in the photo at lower right, taken in May 2007. The restored tower has become a leading tourist attraction on Trinidad's northeast coast.

Local History ~ Telegraph poles

Signal boxes were essential for the control of railway traffic. Many such structures once dotted Trinidad's landscape along the railway lines, but very few remain.

1.This is the base of a signal box at Caroni along with the telegraph pole still standing prominently.

2.There are so few artifacts left from our railways which closed over 40 years ago that, when you find something like this telegraph post in Warrenville, it is reason for a minor celebration.

Local Calypso

It's Calypso Heritage Month in Trinidad

The grandmaster, Lord Kitchener (Aldwin Roberts), one of Trinidad's best-loved calypsonians.
With a career spanning more than 60 years, he left an enormous legacy of recordings and original compositions

Live performance of his 1978 hit "Sugar Bum Bum."

Norman Span, known by his stage name, King Radio was a calypsonian active in the 1930s and 1940s. King Radio is believed to be the first winner of the Trinidad Road March title with “Tiger Tom Play Tiger Cat” in 1932. He went on to take the title the following year with the composition, “Wash Pan Wash”. He was the composer of many calypsos which later became standards, such as "Man Smart, Woman Smarter" and "Brown Skin Gal

Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow, affectionately dubbed, The Birdie is the unrivaled Calypso King of the World, with a career that spans over 40 years. The ability to entertain and educate simultaneously has been characteristic of the Mighty Sparrow's style and career. A combination of talent, hard work and opportunity enabled Sparrow's ascendance to Calypso King of the World

Live performance of his biggest hits "Jean & Dinah."

Calypso Rose, whose real name is McArtha Lewis, was born on April 27, 1940 in Bethel, Tobago. In the year 1977 she became the first woman ever to win the Trinidad Road March competition, which she won with her song "Tempo."

Live performance of her most famous song, "Fire in me Wire,"

The Mighty Duke (Kelvin Pope) over the years became renowned not only for delivering social commentary; political and witty, humorous songs with equal skill, dignity and lyrical mastery but also for his stately stage presence and for being one of the best-dressed Calypsonians. He is the only Calypsonian in Trinidad and Tobago’s history to have won the Calypso Monarch title four consecutive times

Local History

Trinidad and Tobago First Citizen

In December 1971 a team of archaeologists made a find of extraordinary historical importance at Banwari Trace in South Trinidad with the discovery of the oldest human skeleton in the West Indies. The excavation was a joint initiative of the Trinidad and Tobago Historical Society (South Section) led by Professor Marcio Veloz Maggiolo. Christened "Banwari", it's survival for 5000 years at 20cm below the surface is nothing short of miraculous

Local Horning Facts

As Trinbagoians we are very accustomed to the concept (and practice) of hornin’! It is the fodder for soca and kaiso annually, the cause of heated debate at work, the explanation for why your little sister’s hair has a markedly different texture to yours etc. etc

1. There are benefits to hornin’ and evolutionary scientists agree. Now we not talkin’ bout getting your cake, cake, cake and eating it too eh palos. Evolutionary scientists have suggested that there were numerous benefits to infidelity back in Captain Caveman’s day.
Ironically, women with horner men still get the same gifts today (who say Carnival costume!!!) In pre-history, the over-sexed males who had numerous partners propagated the most, resulting in that hornin gene being passed on. Makes sense…

2. There is in fact a hornin’ gene in men!!!! Actually there is a gene that when present in a man’s physiology indicates the individual will be unable to form a strong attachment to their significant other. Less attachment emotionally means horn sharing like wind!!!

3. Hornin’ is a reality across cultures. It was rampant with the classical Greeks and Romans (they also enjoyed same sex relations), pre-industrial Europeans, historical Japanese, Chinese and Hindus. So it cannot be said of Trinis that we are the root cause and sole providers of as the Jamaicans term it, “bu’n”. We didn’t start the hornin’, it was always burning since the world’s been turning…

4. Coupling up is a hallmark of human society. UN studies have shown that across different societies, close to 90% of men and women get married by the time they are 50. So horn or no horn, people getting married, and that’s a good thing….right?

5. Hornin’ doesn’t mean a relationship is doomed or unhappy. Despite the conventional wisdom that says if you hornin’ yuh not happy, one study shows that 56% of lolo-sharing men said their relationship was happy or very happy and conversely 34% of cheating women said the same. Go figure!

6. Eating a next man food or mate poaching as it is also called is no longer taboo, it is actually a trend. Recent studies now show that Cassie echoes nuff horner man and woman sentiments in the 21st Century, as more and more individuals are now trying to steal individuals who are already in committed relationships, and make them their significant others. Good luck peeps, but as the ole people say, “ How you get dem, yuh lose dem!”

7. Hornin’ is everywhere!! Though not on the zombie levels of say “The Walking Dead” or “World War Z”, hornin gone clear dread! A 2010 study right here in T&T showed 40% of married men interviewed have cheated on their spouses with 30% of married women doing the same. Personally I feel the women lied to cover their arses, and the men too! Look at those numbers, and that is pre Instagram people!Imagine the level of forkries hornin’ has surpassed in 2014….Lawd Fadda!

8. There are different types of hornin’. Hornin’ no longer can be constrained to just p in v or oral enjoyment *insert Gage sound effect here* anymore! Hornin’ now includes romantic hornin’, where emotional cheating takes place without any penetration; good ole fashioned sexual hornin’ which includes all the perverse, physical attributes (the best kind) and the combo of sexual and romantic involvement where yuh just forking caught up and paranoid like TY$.

9. Our own damn brains contribute to hornin’. Now this one shocked me, as me and a female co-worker discussed this some time ago as she was describing her being caught between two cockys, I mean men. She maintained she loved the horner man, who she was with prior to her current salami, I mean beau. But attached to her boyfriend, who was actually better in bed than said horner helper…Dafuq!!!! Experts now say that 3 parts of our brain deal with sex drive, emotional love and lastly partner attachment. Sometimes they work in combination, other times separately with no co-relation, resulting in one actually getting bazodee by the different impulses and messages shooting through your cranium. Isn’t science marvelous?! No wonder Bill Nye horn he wife…

10. This one everyone knew already but we can re-iterate: Hornin’ is caused by a variety of psychological, cultural and economic variables but one thing is clear—Hornin’ is global! It is an international phenomenon that happens with remarkable regularity despite the near universal disapproval of this behaviour. It’s like stealing and office bjs, you know it’s wrong but it’s still gonna happen anyway….

Local Fruit ~ Pomegranate

Benefits of Pomegranate

1. Beauty Benefits

Regenerate Cells. Pomegranate protects the epidermis and dermis by encouraging skin cell regeneration, aiding in the repair of tissues, healing wounds and encouraging circulation to skin that is healing.

Protect from the Sun. Consuming pomegranate provides the skin with compounds that help to protect against free radical damage which can cause sun damage, cancer and sunburn. The oil of a pomegranate contains the antioxidant ellagic acid that can help to inhibit skin tumors to protect the body from skin cancer.

Slow Aging. Pomegranates can help to prevent hyperpigmentation, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles that are often caused by sun damage.

Produce Youthful Skin. Because pomegranates help to soften the skin and produce additional elastin and collagen it can make your skin look more firm, smooth and youthful.

Help with Dry Skin. Pomegranates are often added to skin care products because they have a molecular structure that can penetrate deep layers of most skin types to provide additional moisture.

Use for Oily or Combination Skin. Oily or combination skin types that are acne prone can use pomegranate to sooth these outbreaks and minimize burns or scarring that can occur during breakouts.

Image

2. Health Benefits

Eliminate Free Radicals. The high levels of antioxidants like hydrolysable tannins or polyphenols in pomegranates help to minimize the effects of free radicals and remove free radicals from the body.

Protect Cardiovascular Health. Pomegranate juice can act as a blood thinner and helps to remove plaque from the arteries that will help to minimize the risk of atherosclerosis. Consuming pomegranate juice can help lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol to improve heart health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Fight Cancer. The antioxidants in pomegranates are effective in clearing away some types of cancer, including breast, prostate and skin cancers.

Improve Bone Quality. The enzyme inhibitors in pomegranate juice can help to prevent damage to the cartilage. It can also help to control cartilage degeneration to prevent osteoarthritis.

Boost Digestive Condition. Pomegranate juice helps to secrete enzymes with anti-bacterial properties that aid digestion and help to fight off hemorrhoids, nausea, dysentery, intestinal parasites, piles and diarrhea. You can also use pomegranate juice as a laxative to treat constipation.

Increase Appetite. Children that do not have a strong appetite can drink a glass of pomegranate juice to get an appetite stimulant.

Cure Anemia. The high amounts of iron in pomegranates will raise hemoglobin levels in your blood to help correct anemia.

Reduce Inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of pomegranates stems from its high vitamin C content that will help to manage asthma, sore throat, cough and wheezing.

Promote Blood Circulation. Pomegranates are often used to help relieve blood clots and can help to create a more youthful appearance.

Help Lose Weight. People are finding that pomegranates have a natural property that provides you with additional energy and cleanse the body, making it easier to lose weight.

Image

3. More Benefits for Men

Decrease Risk of Impotency. Those that have a risk of prostate cancer, impotency or atherosclerosis can consume the pomegranate juice to reduce these risk. The high antioxidants will help to manage arteriosclerosis that can lead to impotency and increase your risk of prostate cancer.

Treat Prostate Cancer. Consuming pomegranates has been found to reduce prostate specific antigen in clinical trials. Research is ongoing to see if pomegranates can be used to treat people that already have localized prostate cancer. During these trials the juice was found to inhibit the growth of the cancer cells and lower its risk of metastasizing.
