For those who have been asking about the Pioneer SP-FS52's, here's a pic of what they look like without the grill:

Finally, got the Yamaha receiver...now to compile the other speakers. Will post pics of the completed system soon, hopefully.

That was actually my next question. What specifically should I be looking for when selecting a power protection device?

I selected 3 options which I was looking at:
Panamax:
http://www.amazon.com/Panamax-M4300-PM- ... FVP08C6ST4

Monster:
http://www.amazon.com/Monster-MP-HTS-16 ... =pd_cp_e_0

APC:
http://www.amazon.com/APC-J25B-8-Outlet ... EW2C319Q7P

Devices to be connected are:
- 55inch LED tv
- 3D blu ray player
- home theatre receiver
- subwoofer, surround sound speakers
- game consoles (ps3, xbox 360 and wii)

Open for suggestions. Budget - USD $200...possibly 250

^I have a Panamax M5400-PM since 2009 with no issues and with all the lightning last year and power outages recently I've had no problems.

power filtration plus voltage regulation is important. You want to ensure you dont get voltage spikes or dips but you also want to make sure that no line noise passes through and you get clean audio and video.

http://www.panamax.com/Products/A-V-Com ... b_features
the 5400M has circuits that cut off if the voltage spikes, protecting your equipment.
It also has 2 high current outlets for your sub and your amp/receiver.

these devices also has a soft on for after a power outage you don't suffer from spikes.

you also get to monitor your voltage and current draw

^ Panamax acquired Furman Sound in 2006, which now operates as a second brand within Panamax.

i have the panamax 5400M and it has protected my kit through voltage dips, brown outs, transformer blow outs on the pole supplying our abode and the great black out of good friday and issues with supply during the recovery...

I guess I'll have to increase my budget to get one of those. Given the cost of all the equipment it's a small price to pay for protection and longevity.

In selecting the right protection device, do I buy one with a particular Joule rating? What specifications should I look for in achieving optimum power protection and clean power output for all the various equipment being connected?

Also, I noticed that the panamax 5400m doesn't have a battery backup. Should I be concern about getting one with ups or is it not necessary?

exactly!

just add up the required amperage of each device to be connected to it and you will be able to tell what you need.

Xecutive wrote:Also, I noticed that the panamax 5400m doesn't have a battery backup. Should I be concern about getting one with ups or is it not necessary?
Unless your device has a hard drive like a PS3 or Xbox then there is no real need for a battery backup IMO.

Panamax has the MX5102 with built in battery backup on 2 of its 10 outlets.
http://www.panamax.com/Products/Battery ... MX5102.php

A UPS would be cheaper but it wont be able to run your TV, amp and sub for very long anyway.

if you want you can get the Panamax or other filtration and voltage regulator and then get a small UPS for the PS3.

remember a UPS only switches to battery power when power gets cut. A UPS is not a voltage regular or filter

So I can connect the small UPS as an intermediate device between the voltage regulator and the PS3/Xbox? I think I read somewhere in a review that someone was having difficulty doing this because there was some conflict with the voltage regulator detecting the ups and wasn't powering on.

I believe the better setup is to have the UPS before the voltage regulator, however a UPS capable of running ALL your equipment in a power outage long enough for you to shut everything down will be every expensive - which is why I suggested a small UPS placed between the Panamax and the PS3.

ps. I don't have a UPS on my PS3
maybe if I had a HTPC I'd be more inclined in getting a UPS

For now I'll go for the Panamax and then see how I can improve the setup from there. Thanks.

So I can plug my small UPS into my voltage regulator and get combined voltage regulation, surge protection, and UPS power for my PS3 and computer??

I was told something similar to this by a few people in IT as well, that I should not plug a UPS into a voltage regulator/surge protector.

Just trying to verify. If they were wrong, I'll switch around my UPS accordingly now...

My lamp on my projection tv went last week so took the opportunity to upgrade.
Looking for something in the 55 inch category.
Any ideas.

Some will advise plasma as they have a higher contrast ratio than led tvs, i.e. the ability to show the brightest whites and darkest blacks. However, I personally prefer LED TVs which are now being developed in an attempt to match the contrast of a plasma but with lower power consumption.

A Samsung un55es6500 is a nice tv which is going at around 15k in pricesmart

If you want something more high end there are other models in the ES Series like the 7500 and 8000. It's successors are the F7500 and F8000. Price range approx. 17k - 25k
