Xecutive wrote:Yo fellas, I'm searching for a good av receiver to use for a home theatre system nothing too expensive (probably 400US max). The following links are two receivers I've considered, the latter being a favourite on tuner:
Receiver:
Yamaha RX-V673 7.2 (getting a good price on this)
http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-vi ... mode=model
very good amp!
or
Pioneer VSX-1022-K 7.1
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-1022- ... 801&sr=1-1
Also very good amp!
The speakers to be connected are:
Subwoofer: Polk Audio PSW505
Satellites: Polk audio OMW3 or OMW5
Floor Standing Speakers: Pioneer SP-FS52 (Max Power Handling 130W Nominal Impedance 6 Ohms)
Not bad.
Additional features that will be a plus include: Airplay, Zone Selection, etc.
Okay, that's cool, make sure you read the fine print on the amp features.
What is the main advantage of adding a second subwoofer to the setup? and is 7.2 really necessary? The room size is approximately 17'x11'.
The main advantage of a second sub is to smooth out standing waves that will creat bass peaks and troughs in your room. With one sub the tendency to do so is exaggerated. if you place the sub against a far wall, you will notice as you move through the room, the bass will increase and decrease. Also, the room resonant frequency will be the main area this effect will be worse.
Hopwever, a second sub is usually not worth the expense. With some simple trial and error you can place one sub with good effect.
The other benefit of two, is that you can have them playing in stereo, closer to the left and right channels, thereby making the seperate subs more difficult to localise. Again, with good front channels and a proper crossover set, you can achieve the same effect with one sub.
Also, I purchased the Pioneer SP-FS52 floor speakers at pricesmart because of the excellent price on them and the good reviews. The max power handling is rated at 130W but the Yamaha receiver indicates:
Rated Output Power (1kHz, 2ch driven) 105W (8ohms, 0.9% THD)
Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven) 90W (8ohms, 0.09% THD)
Dynamic Power per Channel (8/6/4/2 ohms) 130/170/200/240W
Is it that the continuous power output will be at 90W?
That is RMS 90W
Will this receiver be sufficient to power the Pioneer SP-FS52 speakers or will it put a strain on the receiver's amp given that the recommended max power input is 130W?
More than enough power. In fact in most casual listening, your amp will be putting out MUCH LESS than the rated 90W, and you will not even know.
and finally will this produce a clean quality audio signal or will it distort beyond 90W?
You will never play your speakers that loud. They will get very loud and THEN distort before you ever drive them that hard, especially with a sub. The power is not the real issue. It's the impedence that is fairly low in the bass region, and your sub amp will be taking care of those with your main speakers crossed over fairly high.
any advice will be appreciated as i'm new to this.
