Local Tobago ~ Healing with Horses
Local Hunters Gone Wild ~ Part 1
Healing with Horses Dog (Lola) Shot By Pellet Gun (Sun20-12-15)
This afternoon, two French travelers who are volunteering with Healing with Horses were up in the HWH park when three strange men walked past the fence staring at them. The men then pulled out a pellet gun and shot Lola, a sweet & gentle HWH dog (loved by all, especially the children). Lola at the time was innocently relaxing, bothering no one.
The French couple heard the loud 'PAK!' noise of the pellet as it struck Lola in her chest. They ran forward shouting at the men who nonchalantly got into a small white mini van with rust at the back and drove off. In shock, Lola could not even cry out at first, but after some seconds was squealing and shaking with pain as blood poured from her chest.
The couple (Emerik and Armele) rushed her down to the stables where Lennon cleaned her wound thoroughly. Dr. Barrow-Smart, the only Tobago vet accessible at the time, was called. She must be congratulated for her swift response. Within minutes she was at the stables to tend to Lola. Lola was given an injection for calming, antibiotics, iron (for the blood she had lost) and Negasunt was applied to her wound.
Dr. Barrow-Smart's husband says pellets normally go straight in, so it does not appear that it shattered in her body. At the time of taking these photos, Lola was still stunned, lying stationery, her gums white (dog's gums go white when they are in shock), tail between her legs.
What kinds of people would do this to an innocent animal?
While we may not always be able to apprehend, identify or prosecute those who engage in animal cruelty, we can remain aware, keep our eyes open for such situations and act as swiftly as we can to get vet assistance if the animal is wounded.
UPDATE (Mon21-12-15): With lots of loving attention at her HWH home, as well as the many well wishes and positive energy from everyone who commented on her story, Lola is recovering really well
