Local Red Howler Monkey

As one of our Iconic Monkey species,the red howler, clings on to survival in the little habitat they have left people still find ways to persecute this animal.

A friend of mine described the horror she experienced as the body of an adult monkey was dumped out of a bag at her feet.

The animal was poached in the southern part of the country.

With 2 weeks left for Christmas monkeys are again on the menu.

All are in the sights of poachers, adults make pot and babies make pet.

We need to stop this level of barbarism, savagery and greed.

The non human primates share about 97 % of our DNA.

Think about that when next you dine on monkey your cousin

Lift your voices, lift your pens.

What an amazing exhibition of togetherness and Agricultural Culture.

The Tableland Pineapple Farmers Association held their Eat Local Food Day at the Enchanted Gardens Banquet Hall formerly known as Simplex Complex on Wednesday.

Food, Fun and Farming fellowship was the order as scores of visitors came to support and experience this beautiful and needed drive in our twin island state.

Local San Juan ~ 3 Dogs

I work in San Juan and lately I noticed three dogs, always together - boys all three of them

A couple of weeks before I took this picture the photo with the next two was passing close to where I work and I couldn't help notice that the one with the white patch by his neck looking back to see if his friend was behind him, and when he saw him slowly trotting behind he looked kind of happy, now this story doesn't stop there - they're homeless, strays - they look everywhere for food always together, sometimes the pair you see in the photo here sometimes all three of them,

One day I saw them looking hungry and I bought some buns ( its all it had at that time) and by the time I rush to give them they were gone, moved on, they're all a bit tattered looking one more than the rest.

The reason why I took these photos is because these dogs were so hungry that they were hanging around a dustbin nearby and hoping to find something to eat! my heart went out when it have a patch of grass close by and one of the dogs were eating it! people this is in Saddle Rd San Juan, opposite KFC and if you guys read this I post and you see them please help them! give them some food its not nice being in these dogs shoes! I am crying out for help for these dogs

Not a Piece of Leg or nothing, a whole DAM roach.

So please ppl be very careful what u buying on the outside especially from the Doubles Vendors.

Local Architecture History ~ George Brown

Working for Turnbull Stewart Limited the appointment of George Brown to go to Trinidad as a "Superintending or Foreman Builder"

A list of his works include: The old Queens Park Hotel, Mille Fleurs, St. Ann's Church of Scotland on Charlotte Street, Royal Victoria Institute, Holy Rosary Church on Richmond Street, the old shops on lower Frederick Street, most of them "renovated ' or demolished, the old Barclays Bank building and Union Club on Independence Square, Roman Catholic Church in Moruga and of course The George Brown House on Queens Park West.

Most of the middle income suburban filigree suburban houses in Belmont and Woodbrook were designed by him

George Brown had a hand in virtually all the buildings on Queens Park West.

Archbishop's House was designed in Ireland, but George Brown built it

Local Jazz Musician ~ Raf Robertson


Internationally-acclaimed musician Rafael “Raf” Robertson passed away on Thursday (3-12-15) from complications due to a flu virus.

Many of his friends and musical peers were unaware that Robertson was ill and so were shocked upon hearing the news of his death yesterday morning.

Raf Robertson was a beautiful human being who used every opportunity to engage and enlighten those of us around him.

He was always one to offer a kind supportive word to a young musician in a bid to encourage them to be better.

Local Santa Cruz ~ Green Market - 1st Annual Pastelle Cook-Off


The team of judges were looking at the basic of a good pastelle.

Nice skin, with cornmeal not crumbling due to microwave, showing the sheen on it when you opened the fig leaf.

Also not too thick, just as the meat-filling inside shouldn’t be too thin.

The meat must be moist, colour must be correct, raucous is a natural food colouring that is sometimes used and we considered this as added points when used.

The correct balance of herbs and raisins, capers or olives also added points.

Presentation is a must and the use of banana leaves in preparation, as this brings out added flavours when steamed, against using just aluminium foil alone

1st place with to Sangre Grande’s David Chung. The balance of taste, the look of it when I open the fig leaf, the separation of the cornmeal as i cut it with my fork, the colour and taste was fantastic. He was well deserved winner. David has taken part in many competitions and I can see why. He was in a class of his own with that Soya.

2nd place went to Joann Delicia, a Green Market farmer, who engaged us with a taste of all three types of pastelles, beef, chicken and veggie. The Beef gave her second spot.

3rd place went to my Green Market roast pork & Black Pudding vendor, Camelita Attong, with her beef pastelle.

Local Monkey ~ White-Fronted Capuchin


This is Edina. A White- fronted capuchin Cebus albifrons. TheTrinidad white-fronted capuchin (ssp. trinitatis) as critically endangered. It is endemic, found no where else but here in our forests. Edina was surrendered to the ECWC about 7 years ago.

Her history is that she was hit when her mother was shot and had to receive medical attention for several weeks until she recovered.The lady's father was a hunter and her mother took care of the baby monkey.

When the mother passed away the lady assumed care of the mother's "baby" but Edina was not impressed. The mother was the person the monkey related to and now she was no longer there. The lady was forced to surrender Edina as the monkey's level of violence towards her escalated.

Biting, scraping, destroying clothes and spectacles in an attempt to get at her and portray her displeasure. When she was surrendered she had good days and bad days. Sometimes she was very nice and sometimes she seemed to trip off. The bad days have now become permanent with her showing affection on a limited basis but always acts in a defensive and sometimes self destructive manner.

Our plan is to get Edina back into the wild where she belongs. We once thought that captive raised monkeys would not make it back in the wild but we have learned and experienced a lot over the past 7 years. Next week we begin work on her new enclosure which will allow us to take her to an area where she would be able to encounter other monkeys of her kind and introduce them.

Whenever she is ready to join the troop she will be released. This could be a long process or it could occur quickly. The behaviour of the monkeys to her and Edina to the new environment will determine the result.

She is now about 12 years old, their life expectancy is about 45 years. We would like to give her every opportunity to live out her life free. and wild. Her greatest danger would be faced at the hands of man.She was shot once and came to us ,now it is time to give her a fighting chance.

Monkeys make terrible pets, they are Born to be Wild, Born to be Free.Those who believe that this is " another story" can make an appointment to come and see Edina at the ECWC.
