backcountry.com has a sub site called whiskey militia that does one deal at a time for a few minutes at a time and also a members area where some deals last a couple days......everything from clothes, belts, shoes for men and women etc.

www.whiskeymilitia.com
click on private stash, register (or login if u have a backcountry account) and see what they have....members area is updated often from what i've seen.....

at the moment they have a couple freestyle usa watches for about 66% off.......

don't have a smart phone, but i imagine it would be cool to keep an eye on the site during the day.....i check in occasionally to see whats offered....

just as a heads up though, i think WM has a 30 day return policy (because its crazy one time deals), but backcountry.com itself and their branch sites have an unconditional lifetime return policy, so if you buy something from the main backcountry websites, and dont like it or it breaks, warranty or not, they will refund it, no matter the time frame or reason......

I have the Seiko Black Monster, and it really is a very nice watch for the money.

If you are looking for an automatic, there is no better value for money I think, than the SKX779 or in your case the orange one.

The only thing I don't like in it is the locking latch for the bracelet, but that might just be a flaw with mine. It even has a diver's extension (not like I dive in a wetsuit anyway), and I've hiked with it and beat it against trees and mud (not intentionally obviously) and there is no appreciable damage to it.

It is NOT however, a G-Shock replacement. It is also not an Omega Seamaster, or Rolex Submariner in terms of heritage, but it looks almost as good in terms of fit and finish.

casper my next watch will be a orange monster. However if you can don't get it locally. Most local stores only carry older stock with the 7s26 movement which is now replaced by the 4r36 movement. The 4r36 features hacking and the ability to manual wind.

A few months ago I got a SARZ005 with the 4R36 moment...very very nice. My particular movement only looses 4 to 5 seconds a week. Which is very close to COSC standards.

When it comes to Seiko I also try to order watches only made for the JDM market direct from retailers in Japan.

1. I find they have very elegant designs that you don't see in general export models
2. Seiko watches made for the local JDM market go through higher quality control standards than those for general export, at least that's the general consensus of many Seiko enthusiasts.

Check out the Grand Seiko line, the movements used in those are way better quality than Rolex. There are only 12 watchmakers that work on the Grand Seiko line. When you send your watch for servicing it's done by the same watch maker that assembled it.

Ummm this is a noob question outlaw...but is it safe to order the orange monster from amazon???

And btw as u have a good amt of knowledge on watches...what are ur thoughts on movado watches? I want one but I've read lots of reviews saying they're all bling and nothing really special...was thinking about getting one from the museum collection...a stainless steel band model

I ordered the monster off amazon, didn't have any issues. You will be paying 30% duty, and 15% VAT.
Movado's are overpriced quartz watches, but they do look nice. Nothing is really special about them anymore, as are quite a lot of other Swiss brands (like Tag Heuer vs the original Heuer). If you are looking at an inexpensive swiss, look at Tissot. The PRC series is good value for money.

And unless you plan on not wearing the watch regularly, there is no need for hand wind. Also, if you are a nitpicker to require hacking, just to get the seconds right, then a mechanical is not for you. COSC standards are expensive to maintain, as you have to have the watch regulated as per the manufacturer's schedule. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 7S26 which is used on several Seiko divers including the SKX007, it is rugged as it does include plastic parts for shock absorption, and doesn't require regular servicing. I have another Seiko 7S26 powered watch that is over 8 years old and runs fine without ever having to open the case to remove dust/lubricate etc.

If you need to be that on time, then again a quartz (or better an atomic quartz like the Citizen Attessa Jetsetter line or cheaper Skyhawk A-T, Seiko Brightz). The atomics will not always synchronise in Trinidad, it tends to be dependent on the time of year if you are syncing with Fort Collins, the signal spread gets wider or smaller depending on the year. I do not know why this is, but there is a map online that shows this, and my Skyhawk A-T and Atomic G-shock have for the most part confirmed that.

Buy it off amazon, I bought plenty of those Nato straps from them. Didn't cost all that much.

I agree with Val that Movado are overpriced.

I also agree that the 7s26 is a fine movement and you don't really need hand winding. I'm into mechanical watches primarily because I love mechanical movements (mechanical watches have more soul that quarts.) and when the 4r36 came out I just had to have a watch with it.

casper If you want a fine watch with a sweet movement check out Omega watches featuring their co-axial movement. The escapement in co-axial movements is the only true innovation in escapement design in the last 100 years or so. Sooner or later I got to have one of these.

Only reason I'm asking is because I am under the impression that many that are sold are knockoffs.

^ the first one, years ago I knew it to be around $120. Recently I priced one at a watch store in TCM and it was about $190 or so. Not sure about there being knock-offs though.

those watches were every school boy's dream......lol
i got one with 4 buttons and my initials engraved on the back, in like std 3-that was cool back then.

i see them in many jewelry shops still....never really looked at the prices though. amazon has then for 11US or so.....they could really take a beating though and battery life was looong and they almost never stopped working......good ole Japanese engineering FTW!

Conrad - anywhere selling them watches, but that last one is not a vintage, it is a remodelling of an old 100m version.

I have that one to beat around home. The new F91W's don't hold out like they used to, and haven't used a F105 in a long time.

Thanks guys I was just concerned about authenticity as they're warrantied to last as much as 7 years on the original battery.

Would take a trapes in town sometime and see what I get. May consider Amazon as cacasplat suggested if I dont like the options locally.

^^check Stephen Low on Henry Street for the Casio, I bought the middle one there for my son for less than $200, he's had it about 3 years now hasn't changed battery and it's been properly abused and going strong

Yea I bought the new version dw5600. Placement of the light button on the bottom right confuses me every time but solid watch. I keep that in the van to switch to when I playing football, not a scratch on me, other players or the watch and very comfortable

some truth to this......one person pointed out that our climate is very humid.....after opening, the water in the humid air trapped in the watch causes issues......also, the seals never really fits right after opening, and should be replaced with a battery change.....however most times its not done......
as a result, i bought a solar powered watch and will try my best to continue doing so in the future.

Solar watches need battery changes too, just at longer intervals.
