Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams has confirmed that the memo issued by the Special Branch warning of an alleged threat to attack the home of Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar by members of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen, is true.
He made the statement at a press conference held at Police Headquarters Port of Spain on Wednesday.
MEMORANDUM: A letter from Head of the Special Branch of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service which warned of an impending attack on the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams is expected to make a statement on the issue.
How the memo became public, is now the subject of an investigation, with a report to be handed in, in one week. He described the information being investigated by the Special Branch as a “rumour” that was being checked out.
The Jamaat Al Muslimeen has since denied making any threat.
The memo began circulating on social media on Wednesday afternoon.
TTPS Head of Corporate Communications Ellen Lewis said that she is yet to confirm from senior police officials whether or not the email is authentic.
However, a senior police officer has told the Express that the letter did originate from the Head of the Special Branch of the TTPS as is stated in the letter.
The senior officer said that it is believed that the letter was leaked by a junior police officer via the social media tool “What's App.”
The letter read:
Information has been obtained that the Jamaat Al Muslimeen (JAM) is planning activities inimical to the State
"They are said to be moving arms and ammunitions to the North and San Fernando. Reportedly, they are planning to target the Prime Minister's private residence(s) (in) Philippine and Siparia. Moreover they are also planning a series of co-ordinated attacks and will attempt to free the eleven persons charged with the murder of Senior Council, Dana Seetahal and those charged in the Vindra Naipaul-Coleman (sic) case. Additionally, they will target Police Stations that have been carrying out operations against. These activities are likely to commence immediately. You are required to determine the veracity of this information and report your findings instantly”.
The letter, slugged CONFIDENTIAL, is signed by the head of the Special Branch, and was sent to all field stations.

So what now...besides the fact that head of special branch shows no evidence of being hooked on phonics.
Smh
why then have various police and other agencies saying the document was fake while others saying it was real?DTAC wrote:Seems like a master stroke by the TTPS the way I see it. Say there really was a credible threat by the JAM, make a memo, leak it. Everyone in Trini a macco so the document is all over the country and on everyone's lips within the hour. JAM can't very well strike as every eye in the country is now looking towards Mucurapo.
Crisis averted and not one single officer was needed.
Ahhh, you have to love Trinidad.
