I had asked Republic Bank by email why they replaced the card readers used to open the doors to their ATMs. The CSR said that people have been using these card readers to copy data off people's cards when they swipe them to open the doors to the ATM.

But how many people use their credit cards to open the doors at the ATM.

Charges on mine seem to be for online purchases, charity donations and some random store in Dubai

it depends, i don't mind they're not locked. people can always use the during the day, less chance of rob then and get the cash they need.

Varies with the bank.
Republic is more like 3 days.
Scotia can sometimes be 2 weeks.

What's more annoying is having to wait weeks for them to reverse the charges.

Does that still protect if you they get your CC number and and manually enter it on a terminal?

That's where chip and pin comes in. However not saying fraud still can't happen. They wouldn't be able to bake foreign purchases though.

I've had chip and pin since Nov last year and in that time maybe less than five merchants have not had the machine to read it.

My cards are chip/pin. Still I use them for international purchases etc. Suppliers are able to run the card normal without swiping or keying in a pin.
