A DEFECTIVE jail cell at Piarco Police Station and the alleged incompetence of police officers are being blamed for the escape of 51-year-old British prisoner Robert Hastings, who walked out of the station last Sunday morning.
Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams told the Express in a brief telephone interview yesterday he was aware of the incident.
Williams said he would not directly comment on the investigation because he didn’t want to prejudice the case.
“Everything will depend on the next level where persons can comment on it and can give you details on it,” he said.
However, Williams said, “This matter may involve taking disciplinary action against officers and I am the person holding the ultimate authority in the organisation in addressing discipline.”
Senior police sources familiar with the investigation said Hastings was held on Saturday at Piarco International Airport, en route to the United States from Suriname, allegedly with two kilograms of cocaine with a street value of just over $800,000 in his luggage.
Hastings was later arrested by officers of the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau and taken to Piarco Police Station, where he was placed in a holding cell.
Senior sources revealed that there are three holding cells at the station.
“One houses male adults, another female adults and the other cell is for juveniles,” a source revealed.
Another senior officer said, “The key had been stuck in the lock in the male adult holding cell for several weeks and they could only lock and open the cell, but the key was unable to be removed.”
Several complaints were made to the relevant persons to have the lock checked but police sources say no one ever came to fix the defective lock on the jail cell in question.
Sources say Hastings was placed in this defective cell and the door locked by one of the officers on duty.
At the time there was an acting sergeant and a woman police constable on duty, according to well-placed sources.
The Express was told the acting sergeant and woman police constable on duty fell asleep.
Hastings, based on CCTV footage later reviewed by senior police officers, placed his hand through the bars, turned the key, opened the holding cell door and walked out of the police station close to 3 a.m. on Sunday morning.
A senior police source in the Northern Division said, “It did happen and a full investigation has been issued and officers will have to account.”

In addition my Navarra was stolen 6months ago and to this date the only time I've seen or heard from TTPS was when it was reported or if I went in, there has been no follow up.
