at the end of the day..it is a move in the right direction..trinidad should follow suit..as our country which believes in constitutional freedom of rights criminalizes users for harming themselves, which is contrary to the principles of our constitution, measures would need to be put in place to prohibit minors from using the drug as well as ppl operating motor vehicles, decriminalizing mj would be a step forward for trinidad and would definitely ease up the backlog of cases before the courts...the law would not be able to be have retrospective effect however.... look how many ppl smoke the herbs even though it is illegal..so the war on drugs is definitely not working...there will be negative effects from decriminalization, but social programs by the gov't and educating the public more about the harmful effects may lower usage...look how many ppl are alcoholics...and alcohol is legal..so let ppl smoke and get high...taxpayers should not however have to foot the bill for these users of tobacco/alcohol/drugs when they suffer with ailments from excessive use of these substances and go to the hospitals

Just to add on to what you are saying, they should treat it as any other intoxicant and not a crime. Just like alcohol it is not for everyone but it can be very enjoyable when used in the right quantities*. But just like alcohol, there are those that become dependent on it and end up harming themselves socially and physically as a result. Obviously jailing or charging someone won't make them stop. It will just put them in a worse situation where they will put more effort into hiding it.

They should also look into support programs to help people for which it has become a problem for. But wasting time chasing down and locking up people makes no sense. They could use that same manpower to focus on murders, kidnapping, corruption and illegal tint.

*So I heard this from my friend that shall remain unnamed who used marijuana when he went to the Netherlands where it is legal.

Definitely any taxes made off the sale of it should be used directly to fund programmes to assist all persons with substance abuse problems from alcoholism to "hard drug" addictions.

Another thing is farms doing cultivation could be required to produce food crops as well, essentially subsidizing the food crops.
