Muslims must denounce Nigerian kidnap outrage
BY TAREK FATAH ,TORONTO SUN

“They started shouting, ‘Allah O Akbar’, (God is great) and we knew.” Hearing the Islamic battle cry, the 16-year- old girl realized the men in military uniforms, who claimed to be government soldiers sent to protect them, were lying, and were in fact Islamist militants of the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram.

It was just before dawn on April 14 in the northeastern town of Chibok that jihadis of the Boko Haram abducted nearly 300 schoolgirls to serve as sex slaves for their fighters.

Only a handful of the girls realized what was happening and escaped from the trucks taking them to Boko Haram camps in the jungle.

Three weeks have passed and almost nothing has been done to rescue the girls. In fact, on Monday the jihadis kidnapped eight more girls.

Boko Haram has released a video of their leader, Abubakar Shekau, taunting the rest of the world.

“I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah,” the Boko Haram leader said with a chuckle as he stood in front of an armoured personnel carrier and two masked fighters wielding AK-47s, the black flag of al-Qaida fluttering behind him.

He invoked Islamic injunctions about female prisoners of war (POWs), saying, “Allah has instructed me to sell them. They are his property and I will carry out his instructions.”

So far, much of the Muslim world has remained mute about this outrage.

On the international scene, Egypt’s prestigious Islamic institute Al-Azhar urged the Boko Haram to free the schoolgirls. It said, harming the girls “completely contradicts the teachings of Islam and its tolerant principles.”

It is sad to see few Muslim leaders, political or religious, willing to take the bull by the horns and admit, “We have a problem in Sharia law that needs to be resolved.” All many clerics of my faith do is repeat the cliche that Islam means peace.

Then they predictably insist the actions of the Taliban, Al-Qaida, Boko Haram and the jihadi terror groups based in Pakistan are an aberration from true Islam.

But here is the problem.

Many of kidnapped school girls are Christians.

Both the exegesis of the Qur’an and reading of the Hadith literature speak of sex slavery of non-Muslim female POWs both during and after the life of Prophet Mohammed.

Instead of being courageous and saying while such commandments and permissions may have been valid in the seventh century, they are no longer applicable in the era of the nation-state and human rights, leaders of my community choose doublespeak.

Here is a paragraph from chapter four of the Qur’an, as translated by the most formidable Islamist scholar of the 20th century, Syed Maududi:

“And forbidden to you are the wedded wives of other people, except those who have fallen in your hands (as prisoners of war): This is the Law of Allah.” In his explanation, Maududi goes to great lengths to justify and explain the rightfulness of such rape of non-Muslim POWs.

There are references in the Hadith (sayings of Prophet Mohammed) where sex with enslaved non-Muslim women POWs is discussed in detail.

We Muslims have a choice.

We either develop the maturity to say, such Islamic injunctions do not apply anymore, or we can keep on driving fast-forward in reverse gear, and every time we hit an obstacle that appears in our blind spot, we can blame it on “Islamophobia”.

This is why there is a growing number of people becoming atheists and agnostics. Religion has proven and is proving to be a backward, primitive set of beliefs used for political-type control over people.

No coincidence how we have not heard a peep from religious leaders here in T&T. Where's the IRO?

Christianity went through a renaissance period followed by a reformation. Islam has not yet had either. Hopefully, as a result of all this they will.

The hypocrisy of the US govt knows no bounds............

Obama Administration Threatened Nigeria with Sanctions in 2013 for Fighting Boko Haram

Hillary Clinton wasn’t the only Obama administration official who went to bat for Boko Haram over the past few years.

Soon after John Kerry took over as Secretary of State, the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Terence P. McCulley, accused the Nigerian government of butchery during a confrontation with Boko Haram terrorists in Baga, a Nigerian town on the shores of Lake Chad, and in May 2013 threatened to withdraw U.S. military aid from the West African nation.

Boko Haram militants attacked a Nigerian military outpost in April 2013 outside Baga, killing one soldier. Following the three-day battle human rights activists, including the George Soros-funded and liberal aligned Human Rights Watch, which is not exactly known for its impartiality when it comes to reporting on Islamic issues, claimed the Nigerian military wantonly slaughtered 183 civilians and burned down over 2,000 homes and businesses.

The Nigerian government denied the claims saying the death toll and destruction had been vastly overstated by its enemies, and in fact 30 Boko Haram terrorists, 6 civilians and one soldier, had died in the fighting. Reports from the Baga clinic, which treated 193 people following the battle, but only 10 with serious injuries, seemed to back up the Nigerian government claim that no large-scale massacre had occurred.

The U.S. Nigerian Ambassador, blindly believing any Islamist sob story that crossed his path, responded in a May 2013 meeting with human rights activists by defending Boko Haram:

Mr. Terrence announced to the activists that the US congress had previously passed a law that bars the United States from rendering military assistance to any government that violates basic rights of citizens. He said the Obama led US government has therefore ceased to assist Nigeria militarily in obedience to the law.

The threat of military sanctions, and whether or not they were actually implemented, is an open question as there has been zero coverage of this issue in the mainstream media, may have had a chilling effect on Nigerian military operations against Boko Haram. Since Ambassador McCulley’s proclamation the Nigerian civilian death toll by Boko Haram Islamic militants has skyrocketed over the past year.

No wonder the Nigerian government was initially reluctant to accept U.S. assistance with finding the more than 200 Christian girls kidnapped by Boko Haram last month. Emboldening Nigeria’s Islamic terrorist enemies and having been already accused by the Obama administration of crimes against humanity for fighting militants who were responsible for hundreds of civilian deaths since 2010, they likely felt that Obama’s belated support was more a product of diplomatic CYA than actually caring about the fate of kidnapped Nigerian children.

What is happening in Nigeria is a variant of other power plays by the US gov't & co elsewhere. In Libya they used the 'popular uprising' play to destabilize and reduce that country from the best place to live in Africa to a failed state. In Syria they along with their friends funnelled over 100,000 mercenaries into that country creating the worst humanitarian crisis of this century. The gas attack on the Syrians which was attributed to Assad turned out to be done by the 'rebels'( whose number include Al Qaida members) . In Ukraine, an intercepted phone call (and a video) showed that the US gov't is behind these protests which have ushered in neo Nazis into power. The riots in Venezuela have also been instigated by Washington, which was behind the failed coups of 2002.

Against this back drop, one has to be suspicious of Obama's 'concern' for these kidnapped girls. How is it that this man can easily kill hundreds of children with his drones but be 'outraged' at the mistreatment of others? In October 2012, the Irish analyst Finian Cunningham pointed out Boko Haram’s role as an instrument of western modo-colonialism, writing:

"On the surface, a militant group known as Boko Haram appears to be the protagonist. But some believe that powerful Western interests are using the violence to consolidate foreign control over Nigeria’s vast oil wealth."
The rapid growth of the Nigerian economy and the country’s oil export coincides with the increased incidence of terrorist attacks and the increased presence of US AFRICOM troops.
