Nidco starts work to fix Mosquito Creek flooding
WORK began yesterday along Mosquito Creek, La Romaine to prevent a recurrence of the massive flooding that happened on South Trunk Road over the weekend.
There was traffic chaos when brackish water poured onto the road, causing some motorists to drive on the shoulder and other drivers to turn back.
Major construction work is underway along Mosquito Creek as part of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin.
Mangrove has been cleared to accommodate two more lanes.
National Infrastructure Development Company (Nidco) president Dr Carson Charles said on Sunday night that contractors were at the site.
Yesterday, he admitted that the preliminary work of the highway’s extension to Point Fortin was to be blamed for the flooding.
Charles explained: “They (contractors) will have to lift the berm (earthen ledge) to prevent the water. At high tide, the water will back up in the mangrove and then it will go down at low tide. What is happening at high tide, when it starts to go into the mangrove, it is coming over at one point.
“It is reaching the berm and coming over into the road so they are repairing that. They also have to lift the berm so that at high tide the water will not reach and come over.”
Charles said the problem will be solved when the highway is built, because the entire roadway will be higher than the sea level.
He said: “The new road will be higher and the old road will be lifted. We are building two lanes now alongside the mangrove. We are going to move the traffic to those two lanes and then we lift the existing two lanes. That is how we will be getting the four lanes.
“At the end of the day, the entire area will be much higher so at high tide the water will not be able to top over an come onto the road.”
