Yesterday marked three weeks since Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean’s first sextuplets — three boys and three girls — were born prematurely at Mt Hope Women’s Hospital. “Next week would be one month already...very exciting,” a family member told Newsday.
The babies were born to teacher Petra Cummings and banking employee Kieron Cummings.
The first born, a boy, the family member said, “is still on the ventilator and remains stable. The other babies continue to do well also.” Shortly after his birth the first born was reported as critically ill. The parents have been advised that with premature babies situations can change in an instant.
Meanwhile, in a letter to the editor, paternal grandmother P Philip-Cummings expressed “gratitude and heart felt thanks” to the doctors and all medical staff of the women’s hospital for the safe delivery and care of the mother and sextuplets. She also thanked those who offered prayers and words of comfort to the family. She disputed reports that the 28-year-old mother of the sextuplets had sought fertility treatment, but instead sought treatment for a medical condition.
“I never knew going to a doctor seeking help for polycystic ovary syndrome was the same as going to a fertility clinic!” she said.
Noting that the birth of the sextuplets brought out the positives and the negatives in many, she said that the family continues to take everything in stride, one day at a time.
She quoted Lord Tennyson as saying, “more things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.” With the help and prayers from family, friends and genuine well wishers, she said, “we shall make it through. I continue to thank God as I pray for the health and well-being of the babies as they develop.”
Since their birth, a number of corporate citizens and individuals have pledged their support to assist the young family including the Ministry of People and Social Development, the Ministry of Housing through the Housing Development Corporation, and staff of Republic Bank.
