my family spends 5k + a month.....and to spend an extra $30/ bag is unfair.....

because they want to help with environment, we the customers who pay their salaries have to pay???......

if they don't have any alternatives for customers where we don't have to pay for packaging for our groceries........ I will gladly terminate my membership... because their prices are ridiculous right now..

it should not be anything big to them.....look how $30....going to cost them 5k...

we reuse the bags at home to put garbage in, so im happy for the bags, but then again i dont shop at PS regularly so it doh bother me much

is trinidad we live in, and many of us are resistant to change
perhaps PS shud indicate (if they havn't done already), their reasoning behind such a move, as to the general public, they may think PS's trying to be cheap and not give us bags to put our groceries in.

isnt everyone looking to cut costs..........
all they are doing is keeping thier overhead expenses down

are you doing the same when u re use the plastic bag as a garbage bag

why dont you buy garnage bags instead

while a single bag may not look like much or cost more than some loose change

it adds up
lets say the bag costs 5 cents to pricemart how many bags do you think they go thru in a year.........1 million?2 million?

thats still 50k to 100k saved in a year which would mean they wont have to cut down salaries or jobs of a few staff

don't get ur panties in a bunch meng

I doubt they will make you buy their bag for $30...if you bring your own I'm sure that'll be fine.

And apart from them saving $ it really does help the environment.

People only complaining 'cause it's Trinidad. They go to Europe and the States and eat their humble pie while happily bringing their own bag. Half of what it takes to transform yourself into a developed nation is the mentality of it's people!

Soon to be law here in Ontario. Major grocery chains already started. They charge 10 cents for each plastic bag, or you can just reause your own bag to help decrease plastic.

Nothing wrong with what PriceSmart doing.

it eh matter if nobody by it or not, cause it will still end up taking the said 200years to degrade.

if they was serious bout "saving the earth", they would have stopped the service altogether.

no plastic bag is fully biodegradable. the ones that claim they are simply eventually break up into finer pieces, yet they are still detrimental to the envirinment.

its about time Pricesmart try this venture again. yup, i say try. dont know if anyone remembers, but this was attempted before. it took less than a week before plastic bags were re-implemented. saw ah indian get on bad for ah plastic bag.

its all a question of if trinis have reached the maturity level to understand the consequenses of plastic bags and recycling. my guess would be no. trying to explain to the average Joe out there the positvity of recycling is like trying to take away his rights.

I mean, dont we all feel guilty about buying a bottled water in a plastic bottle?? damn, it's like buying a deliberate attack on mother earth.

I wish pricesmart all the best in this venture. however, they need to train their staff in educating customers

people need to take a look at drains and rivers when it rains jsut to see the amount of plastic bottles that are thrown in the road etc flaoting away and clogging in most cases

the fad of buying plastic bottled water while convenient for most installing a filtered water system in your hosue and carrying your own bottled water to work everyday will cut down on your own bills as well as damage to environment

I think you trying to make a point that everyone understands the thing is what pricesmart going to do with the money saved from the plastic bags? Do you think they would stop giving out the plastic bags if they were getting it free?

the same way when you go market with a "market bag", when going pricemart walk with a "grocery bag" which you'll reuse many times.

Its abt time! When I lived Canada in 90's this was already being done.

I hate seen in grocerys where they double the bags and when people would take a plastic bag for items such as a pack of chewing gum.

yeah i been those places last year and they still using plastic bags,
the plastic bags used there are much thinner than the ones used locally

the govt needs to get that plastic bottle tax implemented
at least the pipers will have something to work for besides beer bottles
barbados already has that in place

So what if my car have an issue and i have to use another for work and I decide on the way home i would pass tru PS and do some shopping only to realize i left the 10+ bags in the other car. face traffic n go back home then back to PS in more traffic? pelt out the money for new bags..yes bags. i need at least 10 when i shop..big family. Now ill have to 'plan' my shopping and wont to able to swing by whenever its convenient, or maybe i should always have extra bags sliding around in the trunk..more things to consider

When they start having those insert your 25cents to get a cart and return the cart and the 25cents pops out.

Plenty people don't bother returning the carts and on evenings couple of kids used to hang around the parking lot and return the carts and take the 25cents. :D

Why in Trini we always quick to say no to change and if you go for eg in NY you sort your garbage etc and like I did in Canada I walked with my grocery bag and had a shopping cart to take my grocerys back to apt or to go do laundry I had a laundry bag and cart.
Sun or snow yuh going thru with yuh cart.

Kudos to PriceSmart.. here in Australia it's been like that at the major supermarkets/discount warehouse shops since I came. It's supposed to go into law soon.

Trinis will grumble for a while, soon they'll get used to it. We always have a thread here when KFC raises prices and then it boils down like bhagi, as the saying goes.

To the naysayers: If you think $30 or whatever amount is exorbitant, then walk with your bag from home, as said many times before, otherwise crocus bag FTW!!!!

I went to PS at Movietowne before Christmas and they had no bags then, however, the difference was that at that stage they had not told anyone.l So, fill up cart, things like meat, cheese, vegetables etc, to reach the checkout and be told no bags. Ok no probs, except, have you ever tried packing bloody meat trays in simple boxes and then sat them in the back of your car? As others have put, it is a great move, however, for those people who did not carry their own bags for one reason or another, at least give them the option to buy at a minimal fee. The bags that they are selling are $28 or $38. (can't remember which) for 4. I did buy, but then when I went back after with them to shop a 2nd time, was wondering how I am going to prove that I bought them previously. I did not, thank goodness, have any problems but I am sure it is a situation that will arise, after all, this is Trinidad and after seeing in PS in Chaguanas them having to write the date on the drinking cups in the food area cos people bring thier old cups from previuos visits to fill up, what is to stop them picking up the bags and slyly taking off the tie?

Yorkshirelass, they will still continue to give out boxes.

Whenever I shop at jta, hilo or pricesmart, I always ask to get my items in boxes. Never accepted plastic bags unless necessary. If I do get plastic bags, I re use them for garbage. as for bottled water, I try not to buy as much as I can. I have two brita filters and a brita green re usable bottle that I fill water in.

As for charging a tax on bottled water, it will never happen in sweet tnt, since government ministers families have a stake in the bottled water biz.

To add to what sr said, look at our rivers and see the sea of plastic garbage. Probaly when diego martin and port of spain is covered in a sea of mud then the authorities may consider an enveronmental policy.

If you aiming towards vision 2020, then public education on the negative effects of littering and wastage should have already started
