(not local ... disclaimer)

Most of the tv's I remember seeing in TT were not top models

The Sharp Aquos actually gets fairly mediocre reviews.

The absolute best, reviews and my personal experience seeing them side by side next to dozens of others is the Sony Bravia BR series (only BR, right now BR4 or BR5 are available). But they are not cheap.

Good interim choice (price vs quality) are the Samsung, I have a 32" 53H Model that is quite nice.

Although as everyone says, big HD TV without HD source can look crappy, also always remember these tvs need calibrating.

Just wanted to say that most 720p hdtv support the 1080i ( i meaning interlaced ) and will show just as good as a 1080p(p being progressive) hdtv on normal televisions hd channels to the untrained eye .I would recommed you look at Vizio televisions they are a very under rated lcdtv that has been geeting great response from customers for gaming and tv.Also you all might want to know that both Pioneer and Sony have all signed contracts for Sharp to supply them with LCD panels.Personally if i had to suggest a brand other than Sharp or Vizio , I would recommend the new line of Samsung Lcd's , their response time and blackness levels are outstanding and are to some point better than sharps 42inchers and 56

Umm... no. I've compared them side-by-side and there's no truth to this claim for SD or HD signals.

Samsung's reason for popularity is decent quality at low price. Side-by-side comparison of a Samsung and a Bravia X or XBR makes the Samsung seem like a cheap imitation. The XBR doesn't have much over the X and is not worth the extra $$ IMO.

I have a Sharp Aquos 52" and a Sony Bravia 40" and I would reccomend both. You can't go wrong with either brand.

I'm sorry, which HD channels have you been viewing recently? Where I am, they broadcast in SD, 720p and 1080p, and I've compared the viewing on the 720 and the 1080. The difference is night and day. Come back and talk when you actually have some experience to back up your talk.

Clearly you don't know the difference between night and day. Go outside and watch the sky for 24 hours.

Now you're proving my point. Samsung is popular because it's cheap with a decent picture. KTHXBAI!

^^ And I say compared to a Bravia X or XBR, the quality of the Samsung picture can only be considered as decent. Again, this is based on actual tests and observations that I have done with them side-by-side.

^ with more channels switching to HD, with blu-ray picking up, with the ability to watch HD content online and the fact that a TV is something you plan to keep for years to come, I think it would be worth the extra $$ to get a 1080p TV now and not settle for a 720p or less

i'd wait a bit longer til around February to purchase an HDTV, because the US govt wants to phase out analog broadcasting by Feb 17th, 2009. I'm expecting the prices of DTV's to drop a bit more around or after the deadline.

http://www.bestbuy.com/olspage.jsp?id=p ... e=category

The Upcoming Transition to DTV Broadcasting
Legislation recently passed by Congress lays out plans for the transition from traditional analog TV broadcasting to a new type of broadcasting technology, known as Digital Television or DTV.

By February 17, 2009, all full-power broadcasters will be required to convert all of their programming to DTV and will no longer broadcast analog signals. As a result, to receive TV programming, some consumers will need to make changes in some of the equipment they currently use.
