A lot of it was regurgitation of what we've heard before. The rest...take with a grain of salt:

New Info:
*Projected growth of between 2-3% over the next three years.
*Expected increase in GDP which will (mathematically) drop the Debt to GDP ratio.
*Heritage and Stabilzation fund has increased in value.
*Waiver of Property tax to the end of 2017 (no retroactive tax)

Heard before:
*Exchange rate stability
*Clico issue almost cleared up
*Projects: Expansion of roads, Housing
*Revenue authority coming on stream

We not out of the woods yet:
*Increased oil prices means higher prices at pump (at $ 70 per barrel, Gas Subsidy is approximately $ 800M)
*Floating prices at the pump by year's end.
*Still about $ 10B deficit between budgeted revenues and expenditure (so basically not one arse has changed)

The funniest thing was the man want to claim astute management for the current low inflation rate. It eh have nothing to do with the fact that demand has been stifled because job loss and the rising cost of living have people penny pinching.

Grate is the Pee oN deM...:|

Imbert Speaks - Listen Up

Postby RedVEVO » May 10th, 2018, 6:49 pm

2018 mid- year budget speech by Minister of Finance Colm Imbert

Madam Speaker, after a long and discouraging period of economic decline, we are now witnessing a welcome upturn. Early estimates are indicative of a growth forecast of 2.0 percent in 2018 and 2.2 percent in 2019, rising to 2.5 percent in 2020. And contrary to the negative commentary of uniformed spokespersons, who speak without having any facts, the turnaround is being
driven by economic expansion in both the energy and non-energy sectors.

.. " We are moving into a period of long-term fiscal health .. "

Huh ?

Quick Summary:

It's basically a Macro Economic review . Energy Industries set to produce more - Oil $70 plus etc.
Same Tax Plan etc. Inflation is low. Employment level stable (5%) etc. But Petrotrin giving trouble to pay
taxes.

Now if PNM Row Administration could bring in other serious investors and control crime then PNM is 2020.

We have had years of deficit budgets, i.e. Dipping into the piggy bank
Only when the piggy bank get back what was taken can you even begin to say you have recovered
And also kept expenses/Bobol down

As Mariano Browne said this week, this is the start of the next election campaign

Is how the man call out not one... but FIVE economists saying dey talking sheet

Colm told to focus on economy

UWI economist Dr Roger Hosein, former PNM government minister Mariano Browne and economist Indera Sagewan-Alli all condemned Finance Minister Colm Imbert’s attack on their credibility. Imbert made claims against them before the House of Representatives approved the Mid-Year Review around 1.39 am yesterday. He also criticised economist Marla Dukharan and former COP senator Dr Patrick Watson.

Hosein questioned how Imbert could associate any one of them with the United National Congress (UNC). “For myself, I was one of the harshest critics of the UNC as concerns GATE and CEPEP. Does this make me PNM,” he asked. Hosein said he presented at a recent Spotlight on the TT Economy hosted by the Government. “Does this make me PNM,” he asked again.

He added that he has been commenting on the economy since 2008. Hosein said he had received two small contracts under the People’s Partnership government, and Imbert’s claims that these were “multi-million-dollar contracts” are wrong. Saying he has no political interests and did not need handouts, Hosein said, “What I do have an interest in is the integrity of the numbers that the Minister of Finance raised.”

For her part, Sagewan-Alli said Imbert’s harsh criticism meant she is “doing something right.” She recalled being criticised by both PNM and UNC governments for her views on the economy, and described Imbert as a coward for attacking her credibility under the protection of parliamentary privilege. She said if Imbert is branding her as biased, then he should do the same with the IMF and Standard and Poors (S&P).

She described Imbert as “a magician” for presenting the figures he did. Doubting there was growth in the non-energy sector, Sagewan-Alli welcomed the opportunity to speak with Imbert about the low-hanging fruit and fruit that is dragging on the ground, to strengthen this sector.

Browne rejected Imbert’s claim that he was trying to prevent Government from retrieving $23 billion used in the Clico bailout. He recalled criticising the PNM and UNC for the very unprofessional way they handled this matter. Browne also reminded Imbert: “Numbers don’t tell a lie.”
