The main technical differences between the base engine in the S4 and the high-revving engine RS$ lie in the following:

* Crankshaft/connecting rods/pistons
* Timing gear
* Cylinder head
* Oil supply (key factor)
* Engine cooling
* Intake path
* Exhaust system
* Engine management
