A new version of Google Maps has hit the Android Market today, which simultaneously brings fresher location tracking within Latitude and better battery life -- two welcome improvements that seem contrary to one another. There's also a couple goodies included for the transit-minded folks, as Navigation has been updated to better estimate location when GPS signal is lost, and the number of route options for public transit users has been increased from three to four. Sure, the changes are rather incremental, but who's honestly going to argue with greater battery life? Not us, that's for sure.

Hope they update the maps for trinidad

Viber, Line, Ebuddy is a good multi-platform too.

And whatsapp is basically as good as it gets, IMHO.

The defacto is really Whatsapp.
Otherwise all the popular IM clients are available for all platforms.

You have much more to gain when you lose BBM

Touch is really nice looking and allows you to add people by email rather than number. Whatsapp probably is the most popular though.

Google revamps Hangouts interface, adds screen sharing feature
Image

The search giant today introduced a couple enhancements to Hangouts, the group video chat feature of the Google+ social service. The new look of the Hangouts interface follows the design language used across Google’s many properties on the web. Thanks to the optimized layout, there is now more real estate for the actual live video feed, leading to a better and more immersive user experience.

Besides the revamped look, Hangouts now support screen sharing, which Google said, “Has graduated from Hangouts with Extras.” Hangouts screen sharing is designed to enable anyone to easily share what is on his or her computer screen with everyone in the hangout. Google noted that many other extras would soon graduate to Hangouts.

OnLive integrates with Google TV: App available now, full-gameplay coming soon

Image

OnLive’s Founder and CEO Steve Perlman just announced on the official Google TV Blog that his cloud-gaming platform is launching on Google TV as an application.

The OnLive Viewer app is available now in limited form. It will let users watch other gamers play and engage in a few of OnLive’s social features.

“Cheer (click thumbs-up) if you like what you see,” wrote Perlman. “Try friending and striking up some chat. And, definitely watch some Brag Clip® videos, showing the best (and worst!) of OnLive gaming.”

OnLive is “working closely” with Google to enable full game play with worldwide gamers on Google TV, and more devices with OnLive already built-in will debut soon…

Vizio is at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week to showcase the flagship line of Google TV products with OnLive playability preloaded.

“With this next generation of VIZIO Internet Apps Plus (V.I.A. Plus) devices, equipped with Google TV 2.0, you can simply power on your HDTV, pick up your Universal OnLive Wireless Controller and play amazing games instantly on demand—no console necessary,” Perlman explained in his announcing blogpost. “Play the first 30 minutes of almost any of OnLive’s 200 games free and buy only what you like, or subscribe to the OnLive PlayPack Bundle for unlimited access to over 140 games.”

Users can purchase a $49.99 OnLive Universal Controller to play, and the controller will work with the Apple iPad and all Android devices.

The iPhone plans they specify they are vat exclusive. I would assume the same goes for the Android plans. So that 369/month is really 424 :(
