caught them many times while the bait is sinking down onto the bank... and thats using a usual sinker at the bottom with 3 - 4 hooks placed a small distance apart. bait usually being bonito, squid etc.. normal ting.

did some small fishing off la-brea on the jetty, spent from 7am to 3pm there, wasen't a bad day for the first time fishing

rods were shakespare combo 8' , bait was herring and shrimp, but just catfish and parangas were biting shrimp, the redfish ect were all for herring -

i like to think i have a good idea about tackle and i've never heard of the brand
if you're looking for a cheap combo try shimano's lower end stuff, it may cost a little more but still within the price range and will work for more than 1 outing......

i used to laugh at shimano lower end gear until i started landing more kings and 'big' crevalles on my FX4000 fb reel and solara 6'5" than the penn gear.

cost me around $400 at Tackle Shop for the combo and its the absolute best bang for your buck imo...i spooled mine with 160yds of 12lb test Stren Red..

i'm actually gonna get another one in case sheit happens to my current one, its that good.
