Businessman kills bandit during robbery

A bandit was shot dead by a businessman yesterday during a robbery in Chaguanas.

The bandit was identified by police as Damien Simon, 28, of Kelly Village, Caroni.

They said he was a suspect in several robberies in the North and Central police districts, and a murder suspect.

According to police, the businessman had withdrawn $70,000 from a bank at Valpark Shopping Plaza and had returned to his home in Rajkumar Road, Endeavour, when he was confronted by three bandits at his gate.

Police said the bandits demanded the cash and the businessman handed over an envelope with $50,000.

The businessman then pulled out his licensed gun and opened fire.

Simon was shot and collapsed at the scene and died. His accomplices made good their escape in a waiting vehicle.

Police said Simon was also known to live in Beetham Gardens, Port of Spain, and was being sought in connection with robbe­ries and the 2012 murder of a 14-year-old boy in Caroni.

The body was taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for an autopsy yesterday.

Police last night shot and killed a suspected car thief and wounded his accomplice in Mayaro.
Around 8 p.m., police attempted to intercept a Nissan B14 Sentra which was earlier stolen at gunpoint in Rio Claro.
A party of police officers of the Mayaro and Rio Claro CID, led by Insp Wayne Doodhai, received information on the robbery and set up a roadblock at a junction at Mafeking Village.
When police confronted the suspected thieves, they opened fire.
Police returned fire and the two men were shot.

TWO men who had robbed a Rio Claro pen­sioner were shot by police officers in May­aro on Friday night.
Kevon Charles, of Tableland, was killed and a 25-year-old man is a patient at the Intensive Care Unit of the Sangre Grande Hospital.
Police said it was around 7 p.m. the two men, one with a gun and the other with a knife, went to a house in Rio Claro where they robbed a man of several items.
They tied him up and escaped in his Nissan B14 car.
A report was made to the Rio Claro police and an all-points bulletin was released.
Officers led by In­spec­tor Dodhai later inter­cep­ted the car during a roadblock at Mafeking Junction, Mayaro.
The driver attempted to escape when he saw the police but crashed into a parked vehicle.
Police said the men ran from the car, pointing a gun at officers. In an attempt to disarm them, the officers fired at the men.
Charles was pro­nounced dead on arrival at the Mayaro Health Facility while the other man, also of Tableland, was transferred to the Sangre Grande Hospital.
Police recovered a sawed-off shot-gun and three live cartridges at the scene.
All the stolen items were recovered.
