^I'm glad that you threw Pele into the mix...
Imho, Messi is essentiallly the Pele of Barca...the star/frontman of a GREAT team...
His style mimics that of Maradona, but his ability to win games on his own doesn't (yet).
That's the ability Maradona had that leaves him incomparable to Messi at this stage...without a supporting cast he could still perform, and did so at the biggest stage (World Cup). Messi hasn't yet been able to do that with argentina, i.e., perform and win games without support...
As kevcam said, Messi still has alot of time to reach that level..whether or not he can fulfil that possible potential we'd hafta wait and see...
Atm though, the press will continue to shine their floodlights on him against the poor la liga defences with one of the greatest midfields to ever play the game behind him, so he will always look brilliant...not saying that he isn't - he certianly is an amazing player, but to really and truly be compared to Maradona, he'll hafta repeat that for his national team.
As for George Best...all the talent in the world like Maradona, but always focused on show boating...i read his autobiography recently, and he said that he'd train by kicking a tennis ball against a crossbar, because everything else became so easy and second nature to him...great individual player yes, but didn't have the maturity to lead a team, and himself, to true greatness...in a sense, he is what Ronaldinho was at Barca during his 'glory years'...when he had a very good team around him, they won trophies...when that team died, so too did his greatness...
