Sanch electronics is the current dealer. He gave up on paradigm unfortunately. Not 100% sure he still deals in PSB, but you can give him a call.

I moved the subwoofer around a few places and got the 40Hz peak to behave itself, and some extra boost at 20-25Hz while I was at it.

Sounds great now!

NOW I may upgrade. I always feel you should try the simpler approach first before throwing too many electronics behind an issue.

no no no! don't get me wrong - I assumed that you tried EVERYTHING before coming to the conclusion that you had a 40Hz spike with no immediate solution other than buying an EQ.

One of my first posts in here was to place the sub where you sit and then move around the room on your hands and knees until it sounded best - you can do that with your db meter and test as you do as well. Once you find the spot you should place the sub there.

I assumed you did all that before!

fellas can you all look at this and tell me what you think?
getting this for 2000 locally, i think it may be a good beginner set or at least to work a few years untill i ready to get into a real serious high end system, i like that the builtin receiver has so many inputs and i looking to hook up my ps3 to it
please review and comment thanks

^ for $4000 you can get a onkyo 7.1 system at radioshack which has a separate reciever. This would give you more flexability in the future, plus the front speakers are 3 way  which is pretty damn good for the price.

2k is pretty good my only concern is the quality of the midrange/midbass considering the size of the speakers and the ability to upgrade without changing the entire system. Ask for a demo, once you happy with the sound go for it.

PCWORLD reviewed this system saying

PC World.com wrote:Sony HTIS100

As a surround system the HTIS100 works well — positional audio sounds great. Treble is an equally strong point, but the system is let down by bloated, muddy sounding mid-range and bass from the subwoofer.

* Features - Number of speakers: 5.1. Audio Type: Surround.
* What's Hot - Tiny, great treble reproduction, plenty of inputs
* What's Not - Poor bass and mid-range

the thing is the actual user reviews on Amazon etc are pretty good, then again you can't be sure as ppl can be easily amused.

alot of ppl who are further along in their home theater quest usually say its best to buy a good receiver from the start. Spending money on all-in-one systems at the beginning will end up costing you more in the long run as they are hard to sell to get back your money.

it was said earlier on in this thread
if you like home audio and plan to build your home theater in the coming years then dont buy a quick fix now.

Buy a good receiver - at least something with HDMI 1.3a/b, 7.1 and support for Dolby TrueHD and dtsHD as these are the formats that will be the mainstay for future setups at least fo the next 5 years or more the same way Dolby Digital and 5.1 have been for the past decade.

make sure its forward compatible.

buy some good speakers - you dont have to buy all at once, you can buy a pair at a time and then get the center channel and sub last. For movie watching the center channel speaker quality is the most important.

Great thread, lot of info so i have a few questions, but don't laugh at me ok

1. What is the difference with the following: Why is it called 'Home Entertainment REceiver/Speaker and 'Home Entertainment System?
- Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1-Channel Home Entertainment Receiver/Speaker Package (with Dock for the iPod®) Black
- Onkyo HT-S5100 7.1 Channel Home Entertainment System (Set of Nine, Black)

2. What do you think abt this:
Sony BDVIS1000 5.1Ch Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theater System
Just asking because of the Blu-ray disc/DVD

3. Is it better for purchase online or here at RadioShack, where btw you get very good service.

4. Is it better to buy this online and what does with a red touch of colour mean?
- Samsung LN46B630 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

That's it for now, until more questions come up. Pls try to be as non technical as possible :|

1- No difference just marketing i'm guessing, they both have a receiver and are basically called HTIAB (Home theater in a box)

2-You may want to stay away from that sony blu ray player,in most cases,in the long run,if one component goes bad,ie sub, player etc, that usually renders the entire system useless because things like those use special jacks to connect each speaker, subwoofer etc.Had a problem with a Pioneer system similar to this a long time ago.

3-Might wanna purchase here if your speaking about the HTIB's due to the warranty etc.It might cost alot to ship back something you brought in to replace

4-Again,you might wanna purchase locally,i dont believe in bringing down LCD Tv's through the fact of the same warranty etc,it might piss you off when you finally bring it down and it has dead pixel's all over it,as for the touch of red thing,i think thats just a style something.

hope that helps.

they mean the same thing in this instance -

hottgirl wrote:2. What do you think abt this:

not much
buy the Onkyo and then get a PS3 Slim or a good blu-ray player later on.

hottgirl wrote:3. Is it better for purchase online or here at RadioShack, where btw you get very good service.

depends on what the item is, what model you want and what the online offer is vs the local offer.

hottgirl wrote:4. Is it better to buy this online and what does with a red touch of colour mean?

Samsung "Touch of Colour" is nothing more than a clear strip along the frame of the TV with a dim coloured light in it that ads a "touch of colour" to the black TV frame. If the TV is red touch of colour then it has a red light etc etc

the touch of colour (TOC) options I think are blue and red.

simply put - its rice

Samsung dont really need to do those kinds of marketing antics as their HDTV's are some of the best - but they did it anyway.

thanks a lot ru$$ell and Duane

I am considering purchasing this as a present for someone:
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S5100-Ch ... 287&sr=1-3

or this:
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S5200-7- ... 287&sr=1-1

which would you recommend since i've seen this brand as one of the recommended ones. I still have to check with Radioshack on exactly what they have available, though i am still thinking about online purchase.

Wrt TV, i have my eyes set on:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN46B530- ... 449&sr=1-3

pricesmart has good out of the box packages for most home theatre users from average to above average

same can be said for radio shack

keep in mind size of room its going in

small rooms 10" sub
larger rooms 12" sub

you can always add a bass shaker to your seats as well

Got my HTIAB Sony Bravia, same one as shown in the pic on page one. Sounds quite good actually.

However only getting sound when i play dvd's or thru the am/fm radio on the receiver. Unable to get sound thru the tv itself even though i tried almost every possible connection.

Even looked it up online, but i have alot more checking to do...but the connection seems basic enough and ive hooked up some previously before.

will post pics of connectors from home theater and back of tv wen i get home...still checking in the mean while.

more than likely your TV menu - check in the AUDIO menu for speakers- most likely they are turned OFF!
