Putin Paid $1 Billion to Wagner Group Before Mutiny

Putin's admission of funding the mercenary group follows Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin's weekend rebellion against Russia. The mercenary boss claimed Russia's military had killed about 30 Wagner troops in a missile strike, and he ordered his men to march on Moscow. The brief mutiny ended after peace was brokered on the agreement that Kremlin charges would be dropped against Prigozhin if he agreed to go into exile in Belarus.

Russia’s president paid a visit to the staff of the South military command on 31 December where he awarded orders and medals to servicemen participating in the Ukraine War and recorded his New Year address to Russians. Among the servicemen Vladimir Putin awarded for heroism and courage in the Ukraine War just before the New Year’s day was a PMC Wagner mercenary who was earlier convicted to 7 years in prison for armed robbery.

At one time, the Kremlin denied the existence of the Wagner Group, and Putin's chief spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, referred to Prigozhin as a "citizen of Russia" and an "entrepreneur" when questioned in October 2022 about the mercenary leader. However, Putin on Tuesday said Russia had "fully funded" Wagner over the course of a year.

"The state paid to the Wagner Group 86.262 billion rubles [approximately $1 billion] for salaries for fighters and incentive rewards between May 2022 and May 2023 alone," Putin said Tuesday, according to the Agence France-Presse.

He said the quiet part out loud.

Putin 'mistakes' giving US 'once-in-a-generation' chance to recruit spies - and CIA boss says 'we're not letting it go to waste'

William Burns says the aborted mutiny was a challenge to the Russian state that showed the corrosive effect of Mr Putin's war in Ukraine.

In May, the Kremlin said its agencies were tracking Western spy activity after the CIA published a video encouraging Russians to make contact via a secure internet channel.

The video in Russian was accompanied by text saying the agency wanted to hear from military officers, intelligence specialists, diplomats, scientists and people with information about Russia's economy and leadership.

The rouble sank to its lowest level against the dollar since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, as repercussions of Wagner’s aborted insurrection heap further pressure on a currency groaning under sanction.

New data suggests 50,000 Russian deaths during Ukraine war

Independent Russian media shed light on one of Moscow’s closest-held secrets.

Nearly 50,000 Russian men have died in the war in Ukraine, according to the first independent statistical analysis of Russia’s war dead.

Two independent Russian media outlets, Mediazona and Meduza, working with a data scientist from Germany’s Tübingen University, used Russian government data to shed light on one of Moscow’s closest-held secrets — the true human cost of its invasion of Ukraine.

To do so, they relied on a statistical concept popularised during the COVID-19 pandemic called excess mortality. Drawing on inheritance records and official mortality data, they estimated how many more men below the age of 50 died between February 2022 and May 2023 than normal.

Neither Moscow nor Kyiv gives timely data on military losses, and each is at pains to amplify the other side’s casualties. Russia has publicly acknowledged the deaths of just about 6,000 soldiers.

Leaders Agree to Expedite Ukraine's NATO Membership

NATO leaders agreed to a package that will ultimately make Ukraine a member of the alliance, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a news conference today.

Stoltenberg spoke at the end of the first day's discussions at the Vilnius NATO Summit in Lithuania.

At the meeting, NATO Heads of State and Government welcomed Finland as a full-fledged member of the alliance. Stoltenberg also said the leaders look forward to Sweden joining the alliance in the coming days. Stoltenberg negotiated an agreement with Turkey and Hungary that broke the logjam over the Scandinavian nation joining NATO.

Ukraine will not be allowed to be part of nato.

All they had to do was let the eastern regions secede.. Now the whole of Ukraine will secede

Wait what?

You're saying that the whole country of Ukraine will secede?

This will not age well.

Russia-Ukraine war live: Black Sea grain deal ‘terminated’

Kremlin declines to extend the Black Sea grain deal, stalling the export of Ukrainian grain to the rest of the world. The grain pact helped lower food prices by more than 20 percent globally.

Today marks nine years since Russia shot down the Malaysian Airliner MH-17.
Merely a prelude to the many atrocities they have committed in Ukraine since then.

3000 us troops activated.

I want to suspect its f-16 teams, and other special weapons operators.

Guess the spring offensive will start after all.

This is what's called domestic terrorism.

Ukraine war: Russian ex-navy commander shot dead while jogging in Krasnodar

A former Russian submarine captain who worked as a mobilisation officer has been shot dead while jogging in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar.

Several Russian media outlets speculated that Stanislav Rzhitsky, 42, may have been tracked via his profile on the Strava fitness app.

Russian investigators say they arrested a man in connection with the killing.

The suspect was named as Serhiy Denysenko, born in the Ukrainian city of Sumy in 1959.

Several Russian Telegram channels claimed Mr Denysenko was the former head of the Ukrainian Karate Federation.

The Investigations Committee has also released a video of the alleged arrest, but the man's face is blurred in it, making it difficult to verify the identity of the person.

The news said they were Russian tourists from Belgorod. But ofc you probably already knew that.

Vacationing in a warzone in another country has its risks.

Kaliningrad was once almost only populated by Germans. Russia has a gift of making places demographically different in quick time.

So, apparently the grain corridor was used to attack the bridge. Well good bye grain agreement.
US artillery ramp up expected by 2025. US intends to support ss long as there is a Ukraine to support.

Ukraine has an expiration date now.

Poland has indicated it may send troops labeled peace keepers inside, along its borders.
So Ukraine will be regime changed, and occupied on two sides, with what remains as a buffer.

Elenski promoted non officer ranks, to officer, indicating they are out of competent military.

Merely a matter of course now.
