Why does Euro 2016 have no third place playoff?
Is there precedent for a third place playoff at the Euros?
Yes, the third place playoff was a regular feature of the European Championships from the inaugural competition in 1960 through to 1980.
Why is there no third place playoff now?
UEFA abolished the fixture from the format following the 1980 tournament in Italy, a European Championships which was lamented for having dwindling attendances and television viewers.
The 1980 tournament was the subject of an expanded format, with eight teams contesting the finals for the first time, rather than four.
The teams were split into two groups of four with the winners of the groups going straight to the final, while the runners-up disputed the third place match.
That was one of the few third place football matches ever to be decided by a penalty shootout, where Czechoslovakia beat hosts Italy 9-8 after a 1-1 draw.
But the 1980 edition was the last of these tournaments to feature a third place match as in 1984 UEFA settled on a format which would serve for all subsequent eight-team European Championships.
The new format saw 15 matches, including semi-finals, played and was used until Euro 1996, when 16 teams and 31 matches was introduced.
That setup was used for the subsequent four tournaments before UEFA decided to expand the tournament again this year as 24 teams qualified for the finals.
